Do you back your horses out of a trailer or do they go out the front?

if theres a front door then always out the front- if theres only a back then the back it is!

When we once used a trailer for my pony I actually had to back him out as he has issues with narrow spaces and, although he'll load into a trailer he panics about having to get out the front and if he did do it he'd launch himself out in a real state!

Backing him out he's much calmer. Still he is an exception as has various issues!!!

Frank backs out if we have shared a lift and he is very good at it, have done it with the anglo twice when we had to, both times resulted in an all feet together spring backwards to hit the tarmac.

I put it down to Frank having been around before front unloads were around, whereas the anglo has probably never had to go out the back much .

When I tried to stop my horse flying out of the front of a trailer, crushing me in the process, I was advised to try reversing him out instead. It worked at first but then he started flying out backwards the minute we got him in whacking his head on the way out, so unless you have a horse thats happy with trailers I would always bring out frontwards. We never cured my horse who became more and more anxious as we couldnt get the back breach bar or ramp up in time. We now have a wagon and hes fine.

My horse comes out the back as I have a Sinclair trailer which has a door, ramp and breast bar to undo to bring him out the front so it is quicker and easier to take him out the back. I don't use a partition, so it is possible to turn him round, but he offers to back out so thats what we do.
In the past, I had a pony that was dangerous to take out backwards, so always used the front ramp.
I used to have a Transit with an Ifor box on it with a very steep, narrow front ramp and the horse I had at the time would not go down it, so he always came out backwards.

I only have a backwards load/unload trailer so would not know what a luxury (or not!) coming out forwards would be!

We do have a friend with a front unload trailer who always backs out as the horse tends to rush out forwards if they use the front door

My trailer is rear unload and Stinky waits until told to come out and then does so carefully. He will also come out front load on other trailers, but unless they want to come out front, I just back him out.

Have tended to back out even with front doors as mine have all backed up on command. With the little pony my niece has, he just turns round in my trailer and walks out - no partition in it.

I think if you have the time to train the horse to back up on the ground before attempting to reverse out of the trailer it makes life far easier and they accept backing out when asked to.

I have an Ifor 511, but I always unload Ali by backing him out, as I use a full width breast bar and a tack pack so it would be a pain to unload him out of the front ramp.

Mine backs out carefully with a tug on the tail to let him know he can come out - mainly cos he rushes out forwards!

Saying that though I personally dont' know anyone else who brings their horse of backwards as many people say it teaches them that they can reverse out on loading before they have been secured in.

Think it depends on individual horse.

Backwards works for my horse though.

I too have a IFW with front off load and always back out. Horse charges out the front and then developed a new party trick of lets see if we can clear the ramp from inside the trailer. She reverses out quite happily and calmly and has it down pat now where she swivels on the ramp and walks off sideways

I do however find myself explaining to neighbours why I am not using the front ramp lol

Back them out - after a horse tried to jump me coming out of an ifor williams trailer- though I do think Ifor williams are particularly bad for big horses coming out front ways.

I have an IW 505 and a 16.1 and I find the front ramp an awful pfaff. My mare comes happily out the rear ramp, we have our little routine - I untie her, take down the rear bar, she looks round to see if I'm clear, reverses slowly out, pirouettes slowly on the ramp and actually comes out facing frontwards!

I always bring mine out the front as he thinks shooting off backwards as soon as I leave his head when loading him is great fun. He loads perfectly but if I'm by myself and have no one to do the breaching bar up, will back off the trailer as soon as I go to walk round the back. It's taken me 4 years to get him to stand and eat a small bit of food in one of those buckets that hook over stable doors which is hooked over the breast bar (would pick it up and take it with him if I left a bucket on the floor) while I run around the back, so I don't want him thinking that coming off backwards is an option. He travels beautifully and loads himself as soon as the ramp is down to come home so isn't scared, just cheeky!
