Do you boot up everytime you ride?

Potts wears fetlock and over reach boots whenever he is exercised and Harley wears over reach and a sausage boot every time he works, both have tendon boots on to jump.

I very rarely put boots on as they are not needed. I use brushing boots when jumping - to give her a little more protection but hacking etc is all done au natural. :)

Yes due to accident prone youngster Im still paying off the last vets bill, full complement, overreach, tendon and back brushing boots.

Completely agree with nuttyhorseluver on spending an extra 2 or so minutes booting up rather than injury. My girl wears bandages for schooling and brushing boots for gently hacking with the addition of over reach for faster hacking, plus always in the field with over reach and club boots.

Afraid I boot up too :)
I use basic woof wear club boots every time I ride and he has overreach boots on 24/7. Of course they do get took off to check for rubs or to clean when muddy but Ive never had a problem.

Yup, front brushing boots for schooling and hacking, tendon boots on the fronts, fetlock boots on hinds when SJ and sport boots all round when XC. Oh, plus overreach boots on the fronts at all times! Better to be safe than sorry is my motto :).

Only knee boots because he once tripped and damaged his knees.

I used to think it was daft to boot up a horse for hacking but a couple of weeks ago my horse slid and kind of left his hind legs behind and took the skin off the front of his hind fetlocks. Nopw going to fully boot up otherwise he is going to end up a mass of scars. You just never know when something will happen and roads are like cheese graters if the horse skids along them.

Yes, overreach when ridden and in the field and brushing boots for all ridden work, even if we're just going for a quick stroll. I'm pretty tough with her in some ways (I don't rug up heavily etc) but it would be awful if the one time I didn't put them on, something happened.

Mine has never worn boots and in six years has never had an injury that could have been prevented by them. :) The benefits of having a cob who literally has a leg on each corner.

Never!!! Don't own a set either..... Perhaps I should go shopping? Now touching wood, but Star hasn't damaged herself YET.....

I would never have never and will never risk it. but each to their own, but my horses will always be protected from everything possible

My pony wears front and back brushing boots for everything, and over reach boots as well for cross country, our Irish boy is bigger boned and he usually wears front brushing boots for jumping and hacking and over reach boots as well for cross country. :)

Sorry but I don't agree. 20 years we had horses in the riding school and not one of them had an accident. If a horse brushes - use brushing boots. If it tends to over reach then use overreach boots.

4 years I've ridden my highland and there isn't a need for her to wear boots so she doesn't.
Naturally, if you prefer to use them, then fair enough, but not all horse require boots!
If I jump or am doing hard work, then I'll use them for added protection.

No I dont. For lunging I always put on overreach boots and brushing boots but for schooling and hacking sometimes I use brushing boots and sometimes not then for jumping I use tendon boots and brushing boots on the back.

Obviously it depends on the horse. I wouldnt put more than brushing boots on for schooling/hacking unless the horse had a specific need for different boots.

I boot up for everything. Allround for schooling, knee boots for hacking and travelling boots in the lorry. I love my horses so much I could not bare it if they got injured just because I was too lazy to protect them.

I do.. mostly.
But I always make sure their legs are well cooled after because I find boots
(even the vented ones!!) heat their legs up a lot which can cause more damage than not wearing them!
I don't put them on for turnout due to the issue of overheating their legs also.

ALLLLLLLLLLLL the time, and cooling boots afterwards :)) the only time I dont is if I think she is unlevel and that would be just to check the boots dont hiden anything...neurotic us?????? noooooo

Boot up, always. Different boots for different work/conditions and he is turned out in overreach (has natural balance shoes on) and back boots. When the ground was really dodgy with the snow last winter and I HAD to hack out, then I also put knee boots on - you only once come back with a horse and skinned knees...

Always put on woof wear club boots every time I ride; If we are going to be jumping big then I put on tendon boots in front.

It only takes a little knock to have lots of damage, and having something there is better than nothing :)

always boot up with tendons and fetlocks. Or xc boots and brushers for hacking! he has the cleanest legs! So they need to stay that way, and the one time I didn't he cut himself!!

Blue has brushing boots for schooling, lunging, jumping and fast hacks....they were bought for jumping and fast hacks, but i didn't just want to bang them on him for that and expect him to go as he can be a bit unbalenced.

Herc doesn't wear them...He has a pair of reflective woof boots that he used to wear for jumping (when i remembered) and road work in the dark (back in the days we did that)...However due to his large amount of feather they are a pain to get on and he doesn't need them anyway.

I'm very much of the 'if it doesn't need it, don't use it' school....Goes for tack as well.

I boot for conformation problems and according to work done. Never turn out in boots of any sort.

PS In fact, I only own 3 boots of any sort...

Never - and I have two skinny TBs.....however I am now starting to feel very uneasy after reading all these replies and now you have all made me worried!!! Thanks!

I have to agree with this. I think it's totally unnecessary to boot up all round just to go for a walk around the village! You put whatever protection is needed. My horse has brushing boots on on the front to travel in as he doesn't travel too well and my mums horse has overreach boots for faster work as he likes to step on his own feet and pull shoes off! We dont bother with any other boots and they seem to be fine, they have the odd knock here and there but that mostly happens when theyre out in the field.

Ellie wears tendon boots for every activity, although I tend to only put fetlock boots on if we're jumping. After she overreached on a hack the other day, I will also be using over reach boots every time too!

I really resent being accused to being too lazy to protect my horse! We don't do lots of fast work because it blows her brain cell! She is barefoot so hs reasonable grip on the roads. In all of her 12 yers, she's never had an over reach injury..... (probably will now though) and has a lovely set of feather for some protection! She DOES wear travelling boots, but I assumed this thread was about working boots.

How on earth did horses survive before boots were invented - galloping over rough terrain etc!

Don't judge me!

Laur and Rebelzmum - I'm with you!

My horse wears brushing boots for everything but nothing else. I think boots are good when they are needed and when they fit correctly - otherwise they can often do more damage than good!
