...simply wondering really... one of the grooms at the yard asked me why I didn't clip all of Indie's head rather than just half face, I told her that until I'd moved to that yard I'd never seen it done before and didn't see the point, especially for my horse who is 4, why bother? She was surprised I'd never seen it.... so who does and who dosen't, why?

Don’t normally, Bodey just has a half head, however he has had his whole head clipped out today as we are doing our first ridden showing classes on Sunday, and I want him to look as correct as possible.

this year i did, normally i do a half head clip.
saying that, i normally do the blanket clip but this year did a hunter clip

I take the whole lot off on the second clip, around October time. That means she isn't too fuzzy while we are still eventing. From then on I just do a half head, as the part that is then left unclipped doesn't get too woolly.

Bear in mind that I have to clip my horse every 3 weeks or so from Sept-Dec because she grows so much coat, I'd probably have to go up a bridle size and saddle width if she was left in her mammoth-state!

LOL carmenlucy, I've just had my boy clipped and he had his whole head off for the first time and he has panda eyes too - he's more of a minky colour then yours with very mealy eyes and nose. My other boy is grey and it looks fine on him. I prefer to have a half head if the horse is out 24/7 as I think leaving the head totally unclipped makes the horse look ungenuine. Neither of my two were bad to clip their heads out.

I'll go against the grain and say I don't like the whole head off. I don't even take half a head off. I leave the whole head on, particulary since my horses are out from 8am to 5pm in the winter and I can see no particular benefit other than style. Its not often my horse sweats on his nose!

My mare has just had her face clipped out but there was a good reason why she had a full clip.
In the future though I won't be doing full face clips on her and probably won't clip at all.

Our pony has a full clip and so he has his whole face/head clipped too. I think he would look odd with a half face done.

My other horse however has a chaser clip and so he only had under his jaw clipped to get rid of his beard

whole head off my woolly mammoth.
He will let me do it all with trimmers no bother. Even knows when to stop eating hay to do the tricky bits!

If not his head looks common, clipped out he is IMHO much more handsome. Even the fur on hos face is about an inch thick!

Mind he wears a snuggy hood whilst out in the field...

Prince has got a half head. Only had him a few weeks so didn't push my luck with taking more off!! He wasn't too keen on me clipping under his chin so i may not attempt a full head

Full head off mine except for his ears - am not allowed to do them as far as he's concerned! I try trim round the bottom of them and the outsides but that's all he'll allow. He has such a hairy face and looks so much better with it all off. Sadly he is connemera x TB but inherited the connemara coarse coat and gets v long chin and face hair.

I leave the head on. And the legs. Infact I only clip off what is covered by a rug. Think its mean for them to be bald when they don't have anything to cover it with i.e a rug. Unless you are out hunting/competing every weekend.

Smarter off, but I like their ears and faces left covered if they're spending a lot of winter in the field, but the ones that will tolerate it have the lot off when the weather improves.

My horsie has a very fine coat even in winter so I only have ever given her a bib clip. I think either leave the head on or take it off, i dont like half faces. I think cobs look so smart compleatly clipped out.

Half head. Mine are out during the day in winter and I'd hate to think of their poor clipped ears being frozen! Expect I'd do a full head clip if I were showing early on. But no need for mine who just bod about at home.

Half head. Think whole head is unnecessary and a bit cruel TBH. Especially if your horse is out in the field at all.

And yes my horse does sweat all round his ears but i wouldn't ever clip his face out....
