I took Hannah competing BD yesterday, and she was in her 'madam' mode again... I am having her saddle checked this morning, just to rule that out as part of her ignorance when being ridden, however, I do not expect much change!

I was warming her up with about four or five other horses... there were two in particular that really stood out as excellent, very impressive big warmbloods that moved beautifully and really had that 'bouce' that I love watching. It made me wonder why on earth I bother going out sometimes... no matter how well trained Hannah is, she will never ever move like that because she is not built like that!

Does anyone else ever feel like that or was a just having a grumpy day myself?

As it is, she was placed second with 64.7something%, which I felt was a good mark for how she had been behaving! She set off on the wrong leg in the first canter because she was spooking at the judges table

, but I quickly corrected it, and this was commented on.

I really need to work on her medium work... it really is letting her down. The problem is she can do it at home, but not when out competing

I think perhaps some of it is down to me maybe getting a bit tight through the hips when I am feeling a bit nervous, so it is also something I need to overcome too

Sometimes! I think we all do though!

My mare had a shocking day jumping yesterday, following a brilliant dressage lesson on Friday. I think she was just showing me up TBH. She still won her class though.. witch!

If she was placed 2nd though Becks you must have done something right? Well done

Well, if you want to see what a *really* horrendous 'why do I bother' day looks like, go back a few pages & see what happened to me yesterday...

If A had got 64.something & come 2nd, I'd have been ecstatic.

Look at horses like Giddy and Mr President - they aren't big moving warmbloods, but they are both competing at the top due to being correctly trained.

Rome wasnt built in a day - you've hardly been back on and riding her that long, and a year ago at this time she hadnt even had Troy.

Either way you still did really well, so i cant really see a problem! x

I did see that Catembi, have to say fortunately I haven't had a day like yours for a long long time but do know how you feel!
smile.gif

Oh yes, I had an awful day yesterday she was so spooky and I just wonder why I bother at times she's 12 now is she ever going to get any better, hardly like it was a new venue they just had some jump poles in the corner of the school and she wasn't having it. That is still a very respectable score though so chin up you must be doing something right.

I dont think this is always the case - I mean look at Dexter! A full TB with a full TB skatty brain!

Yet he is doing well at dressage as he is correctly trained and id like to think I am too, we do an accurate test and he does lovely medium work and has on many occasions beaten big moving warmbloods!

Well done in the 2nd

Horses are not robots. Stop putting so much pressure on you both to do well every time you go out - horses are the most rewarding thing ever one day and the most frustrating thing the next. Trust me I know. I think it is the thrill of not knowing which way it will go that keeps me hooked.
Chill out and enjoy the ride

If there is no hope for you and gorgeous Hannah then console yourself that you aren't competing a full Welsh Section D

I'd like to live in the hope that judges are not judging you on the type or sort of horse you are riding but whether or not it is correctly trained and that you work together harmoniously (when not arguing!) in your tests etc
I went to a competition away from here (ie not in Welsh cob land) and almost every horse in the class was flashy and oozing that wow factor; we still managed a 6th and our highest mark in that class (even beating some of the open scores
smile.gif
).
Please don't be so hard on yourself- As Tempi said Rome wasn't built in a day
frown.gif

I wonder why I bother an awful lot, however if I was getting scores/ placings like that so soon after the horse had a break, I don't think I'd be worried!!
I know it can be quite off putting to warm up with the big flashy warmbloods, however you and Hannah sound like you are holding your own!
smile.gif

Whats the problem? You came second, are you not happy with that? Ok she may not look as flashy as some of the warmbloods, but she must be more correct to be placed above them. Theres no need to wish she was something she isnt, and just enjoy her. If you put a bit less pressure on yourselves then it may come a little easier. Well done on the placing.

What you worrying about then?

Just enjoy it and stop worrying about everyone else!!

Thanks... I know she can be soft and ride quite nicely (today she had her saddle checked and because she has been ridden quite hard over the weekend she felt lovely this morning!), but sometimes I just think she will never be able to achieve the paces that some of the bigger horses find so easy.

I know she has not been in work long, and I was quite pleased with her result seeing how argumentative she felt... but I sometimes just think that she will never produce the paces that some of the more 'athletic' horses can, and because of that, and the fact she is 12 now, I sometimes feel as though maybe she is just not cut out for it and should have more babies instead

That is great that he is going so well... Han's medium work is a bit stuffy and needs some real work on it as I feel it lets her down in the test. But I was watching one of the horses in the warm up, and it was so beautiful and effortless

Oh, I don't really put pressure on us, I am still just getting her out for some experience again as she used to travel very badly and takes a long time to settle, so I am not really concerned with her placing or percentages, more the comments and how she feels
smile.gif

Hannah is definitely not a robot, I think she has a split personality!

Yes but paces aren't the be-all-and-end-all of a test. Bloss used to get 7s for her paces and she didnt even have a medium trot, Archie quite often gets 7s for his paces and hes got very good medium work. The paces mark at the bottom is just one mark, the rest of the test is judged on the horses way of going.

I'm not so sure on that one

But her mark was really good, and coming 2nd is excellent

I have had a few judges that really prefer that kind of big movement that the warmbloods find effortless... as the native horses and some of the more chunky ones were getting much lower marks than some of the warmbloods who were doing not as accurate tests!!!

How is your boy doing?

Oh no, I was very happy with it... don't get me wrong, I was pleased with her yesterday for several reasons. Even when she did have her naughty moments, she came back to me, which a few weeks ago she just wouldn't. She didn't put her tongue over when she got herself totally stressed out about something and nothing...

I have never wished Han was something other than what she is. She has taught me so much in the years I have owned her and I love her very much. She has given me an absolutely perfect foal, was a great Mum and is such a character

Oh no, I know 2nd is really good and I was quite shocked at the fact she achieved that place because she didn't feel that great to be honest
frown.gif
But this morning, after a hard weekend, I got on her for the saddle fitter, and she was soft and ridable!!! Explain that one
