I don't have insurance currently but it is on my to do list.
I stupidly rode my newly backed 3 year old out on the roads (luckily they were quiet) a month ago, she was fine, but it only occured to me the other day that if anything hadve happened to either her or a person then I would have been up sh*t creek without a paddle, so I'm definately going to get public liability atleast! It's a scary thought! How stupid of me.
Yes, I have Public liability, death theft or straying, vets fees, hospitalisation fees (fees incured for a stay at the vets, livery, transport there etc) and personal accident cover but no tack or lou cover.
My mare is LOU but I searched far and wide for a company that would take her on as I was promised they existed! My best offer was from KBIS, who offered to insure her for a value of 1p. They would cover third party, tack, rider, and vets fees for 'violent injury and colic surgery only'. No mortality, no theft, no other vets fees.
I decided against it, as I would never put her through colic surgery or anything involving long term box rest so wouldn't make use of what I was covered for. I'd be better off just keeping some cash hidden under the mattress.
Well I think I will get just public liability for my old tb whos hardly ever ridden and something including vets fees for the 3 years old. *Hangs her head in shame*
I think public liability is only about £6pm and Ive been quoted around £30pm for the 3 year old.
I have public liability through BHS membership but not for anything else. Insuring a coloured mare is ridiculous so I decided that in that I could afford to pay vet's fees out of my savings I would probably be better off doing that in the long run.
I have insurance that pays for them to be disposed of if they have to be PTS on my land but that's it. Certainly no vet insurance.
I will have 3rd party and rider insurance in January when I get my licence from the Federacion - I will get a terretorial competitors licence for 79. They also do licences for horses.
I have public liability through the BHS but no other horse insurance. It seems to me to be a bit of a rip off. As soon as you claim for something, that condition gets excluded. It seems to me that horses tend to be disposed to getting the same things year in year out. e.g. My old horse is prone to lymphangitis, and gets it most winters at least once. But if he was insured they would only pay out once. Similarly, my pony is a laminitic, & although he hasn't had it for years, they wouldn't pay out for this. I am lucky enough to be able to afford to pay for the unexpected though. I think you are better off saving an equivalent amount each month to pay for vets bills.
no as 1 horse they would only insure its back legs (got an infected tendon sheath and ripped the other 1 open and his mouth is void as well as he knocked a tooth out whilst on box rest)but i keep thinking must insure the others due to huge bill of said horse!!!
I only have public liability and loss of horse, as Robbie is 15 now, and getting him insured for anything else is expensive. Also, I'm not sure I would put him through major surgery, and if I decided to do it, I would find the money in some other way.
Not having public liability is very stupid IMO, especially when it's included in BHS Gold membership for about £60 a year.
I have my own personal insurance (to ride other peoples horses etc) and I have insurance for my TB. Not for her full value, just for the likes of vets fees, tack, 3rd party and public liability (We definately need that
I have both mine insured for vets fees etc, although i will be cancelling the mares as she is 19 and has arthritus in her knees so is now a field compainion. i also have bhs gold membership. To be clear my gelding is covered for vets fees although if he gets cushions or lamintitus or navicular in his front right its not covered.
I insured my mare for the first time 2 years ago. Never had a horse insured before, but then a friend's horse needed surgery for a bone fragment in a joint (£££). I realised I would not be able to afford a major op like that if needed. I guess if I had enough savings, I wouldn't necessarily bother.
Have public liability anyway through BE/BD membership.
