Inspired by the conformation thread, and having another quiet day at work, I decided to scroll through Chip's pedigree https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/zz+chip to look at all the pictures in his pedigree and read the info about his great, great, great, great relatives.

He has lots of "AQHA Hall of Fame" horses in his breeding along with big money earners and lots of champions, a lot of the "who's who" of QH breeding is in his lines. His breeding goes right back to the Foundation QHs and ultimately, as expected, he traces back through TBs to the Godolphin Arabian, Byerley Turk and various Barb horses.

I've found it fascinating so was just wondering if any of your horses have "famous" relatives?

Yes it's fascinating. I have/had several arabs and Peruvians. Both breeds have pedigrees a mile long so it is just a trip to all breeds and then I can see their relatives from many years back in the appropriate books and read about them.

I know that both my ponies have Prince Harry II as their father, which has always tickled me as they are two little brown and hairy Exmoor ponies born on the moors and it seems so incongruous to have such an illustrious parent! As they are registered Exmoor ponies I do have their pedigree.

I can go back to great grandparents with Militaire as they are listed in his passport. One of the grandsires came up a fair bit on a Google search with his name and Ardennes - seems to have won a fair bit. I suspect trying to look on Belgian sites is possibly limiting my search a bit.

I previously owned horses prior to passports being commonly in existence so I'm super chuffed to now own a horse who has his own family tree and an actual date of birth! I don't think he has anything particularly useful in his pedigree but I've only checked his immediate parents so I might need to go further back. Still feel like I have a posh horse even if he's descended from nothing special! 🙄😆

Yes all of my natives are pure bred and registered so they have pedigrees going back as far as recors began. Same with my Thoroughbreds.

Gray is the year younger full brother to Hobey Ryder - winner of over $3million and 2nd in 3 breeders cups behind Ouija Board. His pedigree is littered with Champions and black type. His Grand Father was a Triple Crown winner - Affirmed. He is bred to the absolute nines!

I can go back to the 1600's with mine!

Sasana Skye/Brieze: https://sporthorse-data.com/pedigree/sasana-skye

All of her full siblings are out doing at least 3*, including Imperial Sky who just won the 4* in Ballindenisk with Sam Watson, sired by Puissance who has produced his fair share of 5* horses and brother to Master Imp who has produced even more. Also has the King of Diamonds line.

Week Orchard Oasis/Osi: https://sporthorse-data.com/pedigree/week-orchard-oasis

Shares the same Furioso line as Valegro (yes I'm claiming that one!) and grandsire is Rubinstein who was quite a famous GP dressage stallion in his day. I think he was on the German Olympic dressage team in Atlanta? 40 wins at GP level. That's according to some of the sources I've read anyway.

Sadly these two ended up with me so will never reach their full potential but they are very happy and loved nonetheless.

Beast - not at all. lol. She could have been crossed with a rhino somewhere along the way for all I know.

Granny horse - yes on both Arab and TB sides! She was very posh. Go check the conformation thread to see where that got her. hahaha.

Mine has a few generations in his passport, and a photo archive group on Facebook has found a few photos of one of his grandsires. If I go back far enough (using allbreedpedigree) there are a few TBs, when he was younger we joked that the TB ancestors were showing as he used to do his best racehorse impression in group lessons 😂🙈

Pot8os is there if you go back far enough on both sides.

Yes they go right back to 'desert bred' horses if you keep going back far enough. It is fun looking though as I especially liked it when you transitioned from photos to paintings of the horses. :D

My gelding is the best bred of my horses - in theory - with national and world champions galore, but he has the worst conformation IMO. I really should pop a photo on the confo thread.

ETA - this is one of my gelding's ancestors.

Harry - No idea lol except his mum came over from Romania and I've met her.

New boy Teddy - Sandro Sun X BRP (148 Broadhurst stud mare although only her dam line is known due to falling out with stud owner/ stallion owner or something)

Bella - she is registered Exmoor, so all her breeding is recorded. She is a Dunkery stud pony with lot's of successful relatives to live up to:D

I love looking at breeding and relatives and seeing how they all compare!

My boy’s great great grand sire was Shirley Heights, winner of the Epsom Derby. By a strange coincidence which I only found out after we moved to his yard at the foot of Epsom Downs.
He’s sire is a Danish Warmblood by Phoenix Nights (by Golden Heights by Shirley Heights) out of a Clevaland Bay mare.
He is the spitting image of Shirley Heights as he has the same colouring and star on his forehead.

Me too! My two oldies are of unknown breeding/DOB, but my new lad is an exracer so I can look up his pedigree, he has Northern Dancer on his sire's side:

I know the breeding of all of ours as they're all Irish Draughts, born and brought up in Ireland.

I love the fact that I can generally tell what their temperament will be like by looking at their pedigrees - some lines are hotter, some are more performance bred, some are more laid back. Makes it fun when you get two (or three) hot lines bred together.

I hunted one - he was by Laughton's Flight, out of a Sky Boy mare (so a TIH rather than a RID) Classic Irish SJ breeding. He was a complete legend but chestnut and HOT - I knew that before I bought him (and still bought him!!) but we had a huge amount of fun

When I was horse shopping a few months back I was clear I didn't want a TB.
I viewed and fell in love with a Sports Horse, I knew there would have been some TB in there but it was only when I went back through his breeding that I discovered he was 31/32th TB (so approx 97% TB).
Doesn't matter - I thought he was fabulous despite being 97% a breed I didn't want. I bought him and still love him to bits.

Finn has quite nice breeding even though he's a giant Connie. His Dam's sire is Moy Hazy Cove and his sire Monaghanstown Fionn is by Abbeyleix Fionn.

Mine are Belgian and Dutch Warmbloods so have detailed passports that show their breeding. The Dutch has Contender as his Grandsire and Sandro and Guidam in his GrandDam and Dam lines. My Belgian is by Major de la Cour.

If you go back far enough they all have thoroughbred in them and can be traced back to the original Darley Arabian, Godolphin Barb and Byerly Turk.

Mine got her first passport when she was imported from Ireland as a 5yo, so everything is blank and age is an estimate based on teeth! I'm pretty sure she's got at least one foal out there, judging by the state of her udders, but I don't even know what area of Ireland she originally came from. I think it's safe to say there's no TB in there, though!

My old share horse was by Maryss Brujo, a fairly well-regarded PRE stallion with pedigree back to 1832. Inevitably, he was cousins to some extent with all three purebred PREs on the yard.

Mine has Conquistador Cielo as grandsire - his races are spectacular. I love tracing back the TB lines to see the famous names from books and portraits.

Yup and I love looking at the older pics, sometimes I find that ‘old fashioned’ type wasn’t what I would have thought too.

I found a really interesting site on TB history a while back but there was so much on it and fab pics 7EA7A66D-B3A5-48AD-A222-CA128913E80F.png

Awww my old loan horse was an ISH with Shirley Heights in her pedigree (also great great grandsire). I looked after a friends friesian for quite a few years and when I traced her sire he had been exported from Holland to the USA and they were like two peas in a pod.

I love looking up family tree's especially when there are pictures. I have ridden both arab and iberian horses and I've found their breeding quite easy to trace. It is fascinating.

Like many appaloosas, mine has Secretariat in there (mother's side) - great great great grandad I think. What's more surprising is that she is 1/4 cleveland bay, (her grandad on her sire's side) and I've just followed one line back to 1670, although I've now started to hit TBs and Arabs. Might have to look more closely when I have time, as I'm at work at the moment, but that bit looks fascinating
