Do you leave any sort of light on all night for your horse/s?

As title, when i kept the horses on a livery yard they had a huge light on over the whole yard (maybe for the cctv). They are at home now but the lights are out.. Just wondering what everyone else does!

no and it really drives me mad when people insist that their horse needs the light left on in its stable. They don't and it puts up all our livery bills if people think the yard should be lit up like the blackpool illuminations.

we leave them in the dark at home but have a movement sensored light on the outside of the building in case of burgalars or tresspassers. It really annoys me when i go and stay at my trainers and he leaves a light on and a radio all night for them, i keep telling him my horse needs sleep!

Daylight length is involved in the coat changing period so I think a lot of showing people use artificial lights to try to increase the 'day length' for keeping coats for HOYS and Olympia! Dunno if it actually works tho!

Glad everyone else leaves them in the dark too, quite a lot of people leave the lights on though. Strange, they don't have a light on if they live out unless its a full moon and clear sky!

No and personally I wouldn't, I struggle to sleep as well with a light on than in darkness so I wouldn't expect my horses or pets to have to have a light on all the time, IMO it might end up playing havoc with their body/mind if they are exposed to 'light' and or noise 24 hours a day.

My grandpa's shetland seemed to purposely move into the very small area of her paddock to keep the security light coming on! Maybe she was scared of the dark!!!! Or had a sense of humour! Sensor had to get moved!!!

I do leave a light on in the barn, but it's one of those 8w energy saving ones that is equivalent to about 40w, and it's in the corner of a reasonable size barn, so it's only a dim light. I leave it on as I have 3 in there together and I'm paranoid about them stepping on each other if they're lying down!

if you want to adjust the coat growth you have to give them ultra violet light. if you want to adjust the breeding cycle you need ultra violet and infra red light combined! electic light only allows them to read a book and bump up the electric bill!!!!

ester, yes me too when my poor horses were subjected to a very bright flood light shining into their stables all night!
So glad i keep them at home now...

ours live without light on in the field so i dont see why they need a light on in the stable.. :S

granted depending on your situation, particularly barn set ups there could be a lot less light than horses kept outside with a moon etc..... but then there is cloud so

Yes, i do. Sorry!!
My lights, my electric bill!! I turn them off when i go to bed they are flourescent tubes and outside the stables under the overhang they are energy saving bulbs.
Then shining over the yard from the house we have 2 sodium lights.
We are Blackpool illuminations but i live here on my own during the week and like it like that!

No - there's a security light in the top yard though that the rabbits sometimes set off. At my old yard the YO used to have to leave the light on for one of her horses or he would try and kick the stable down

He was a total fruitloop tho... (horse and YO

I don't no, and surely thats why they have whiskers and eyelashes so they don't bump into things?
(Unless they have horrible owners who clip them off!)
