Do you like riding other people's horses?

I never used to - had no interest in getting on anything other than my own. However now I jump on anything else every chance I get! A friend let me jump her point and shoot last night - big revelation, thought I would love it as my lad is far more tricky, however was amazed and pleased to find he makes me feel so much safer than a horse that just knows the job! He's more fun too.

I have to say, though, I won't attempt as much on other horses as I do on my own. I am very aware of the possibility of getting injured and not being able to ride my own. Also your own is your own project so you have to push more, someone else's is not.

Interested in anyone else's thoughts on this topic??
 
I do like riding riding other horses, i feel it makes you more well rounded as a rider and also shows you your faults and habits you have got into on your own horse.
I also prefer riding my own as i know how far i can push him ect
 
not in general, I rode quite a lot whilst mine was off and it made me realise how well schooled he really is and what a pleasure he is to ride.

There was 1 that I really liked riding, but the rest I could take or leave, was very pleased to be back on my boy.
 
No, not really. I like the long term struggles, ups and downs, progress and even lack of it that you get working on the partnership with your horse. Riding other people's horses has to be viewed as so temporary that it feels a bit pointless to me.

I'd love to ride other people's horses but never do as then I'd have to let them on mine ... and I'm not that generous

I love riding different horses! Some I find harder than others to ride, and it is very refreshing to ride a different type of horse

i love riding other horses...partly because im the kinda kid who jumps on a maniac of a horse and sits there, while it bucks and bucks

i also love to sit on point and shoots as it makes me realise, that although they go into a fence straight, i much prefer Barney who i can feel on the end of my reins pulling on them as it just makes me feel safer...
i also love it when other people ride barney as they can never get him to do anything

and i like to see that a) he trusts me as he gets very nervous being ridden by people he really doesn't know and b)that we obviously aren't that bad together as i can get him on the bit going nicely.
 
I like to ride other people's horses, it always makes me appreciate mine even more.

I'm afraid I'm one of those people that always wants a go though. I teach a few kids on the weekends and if they are having problems with their horses I love having a sit on to try and resolve them!

On the yard I am on now, just two I like riding, dont like to ride any others. I have occasionally reluctantly jumped on peoples horses in the school when they was bein naughty
But do much prefer my own horse,
 
Love to ride others, can really help enhance my mare and prevents me becoming too set in my ways. The best riders become that way from riding a huge variety and learning how to get the best out of all types of horses.
 
Definitely!

You can't see your faults if you ride the same horse all the time!

Everything in life needs comparing to something else so why would horses be any different!

Only way I get to ride! I've been very lucky over the years to ride some fanastic horses for other people and some less than fantastic horses, I like to think it's improved my riding beyond what I would have gained if I had stuck with a riding school for the same amount of time. Fortunately I've met some very generous and lovely owners. In the last month I've gone from riding a welsh sec d to last night cantering a TB racehorse up a stubble field in a racing saddle (I still have no idea how I stayed on - horse was like a radiator and saddle like a tea tray!).

Have to admit though - am looking forward to when I can finally get my own and being able to do things my way!
 
I always jump at the chance! When you ride your own horse every day you both end up with the same faults... eg one sidedness. It can be an eye opener to ride a few different ones and help you to really respond to what you feel underneath you, rather than ride on auto pilot when you think you know what your horse will do, if that makes sense!
 
In theory, but in truth I rarely enjoy them.

I love riding my YO's pointers, it's good to sit on something different. I competed a horse for somebody for a while, only really rode her at shows and the odd clear round schooling night and it made such a difference to my riding! I love days when I come home absolutely knackered from working 6 or 7 horses - far better than my proper job! I have to admit though I do try to avoid riding any of the other liveries, nothing against any of the horses, but the politics and bitching are just waaay too annoying - think about ten of them standing watching your every move and passing their 'expert' opinions!
 
I used to ride a lot of horses for other people, so it is 'normal' for me. Whether I enjoy it depends on the horse - some were beautiful, an ex SJer who just hung in mid air, and a lovely dressage horse who had paces like butter and made me look like a fab rider because she was just a dream to ride. The mental rearers, buckers, stubborn, mal mannered ones, not so much! However, there is something very comforting about going back to your own, like a comfy armchair (well, a comfy armchair that throws in the odd spook anyway!)
