Do you like your horse's name?

My horse got sold to me with no name or "the ginger one", I chose to call him Bane and it def. suits him as he really can be the bane of my life at times.

crazy.gif

His show name is Retrospect which is okay

Bailey - bit common and boring but its not terrible
Sparrow - love it!
Rodney - not too keen but it suits him quite well (14hh cobby chap)

I used to have a pony that was originally called Merv but it made me think of merv the perv so we changed it
smirk.gif

We are rubbish with names and usually end up changing them!

Diva does suit her but I found out from another HHO'er she was actaully called Dolly which I like more and I usually end up calling her Dodos.

Her registered name is Direct Pleasure which I think is a bit rude!!!!! We found out her previous BD name was Dolce Vita II which I love.

Blitz if OK and is part of his name Fuerblitz which means lightening bolt - which is cool as it matches his blaze which looks like forked lightening, however more often than not he gets called B0ll0ck Donkey which I think is even better
wink.gif

Regen was originally called Splash but it just didn't suit him - I knew a vanner type cob called Splash who was very cute but not at all like Regen; so we took his registered name of Heavens Rain and got my German cousin to translate into German which is Himmels Regen hence why we called him Regen however, I keep calling him Reg so I am sure it will alter in time!

Our mule aka, Muley was originally called William by my mum but it didn't stick and now everyone knows him as Muley.

Maddie is Madon's Even Wiser but she is generally regarded as Mooey!

I don't I have ever had a horse with a normal name, show names haven't been too bad though so I suppose thats lucky!!

Sorrel (Jasper Carrot)
Corker (Great Warrior)
Sherri (Miss Politico) - the most normal I think!
Wellie (Wellington's Pride)
and now Bing (True Gentleman).

I looove my ponies names
smile.gif

Spider, Dexter and Dougal
tongue.gif
I think Dougal is sucha cool name
smile.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

I had a Dougal as well, Father Dougal, so named as he was irish and a bit thick (previous owners words not mine). Friends daughter couldn't say dougal came out as doodle which got shortened to Bug as in doodle bug.
We have had a Ella, Bronie, Duke, Jake and a Babe, who was a 17hh chesnut TB ex racer, proper name Further Risk so don't know why Babe, didn't really like that one.
Also had a Willam, whose show name was Will Be, as in if he was rubbish we could say he will be better next time and if he was great, always said he will be something special.
Current horses are Bare (1st 2 and last 2 letters of Bay Mare, daughter made that one up), she used to get called Pooh a lot, and Beanie whose proper name is Donatus 094, so again not sure where Beanie came from. He is from Germany so farrier suggest his owner may have be call Heinz
crazy.gif
OH calls him Adolf, cos he is german
grin.gif

i'm not sure about Kao's name but have stuck with it as it was my ex boss that named her and she was really adamant about it being bad luck to change a horses name.
plus it reminds me of the fighting games my OH plays. when you knock out an opponent it says 'K.O.' , and that's how Kao is pronounced.
it also beats her original name that her other owner picked......Chaos
frown.gif

she's a madam, or a princess but def not Chaos.

Godfrey I laughed and laughed when i first heard it, but now i love it. It suits him SO much
smile.gif
And I chose his comp name, so I love that too
smile.gif
His original "comp" name was Glacier Fox, which I hated
tongue.gif

We had two who came to us without names being known, so the first cob was called George by us, it suited him (he would have worn a flat cap had he been a person) The old Appy was Nelly, because it suited her. We also had a ShireXClyde who was called Keighly when we got her, that was changed to Molly as it suited her much better. The others have kept the names they came with and we have been happy enough with them
smile.gif

Mackenize was his name when I bought him and I love it , it really suits him, although he does get called Macky, MackyMoo, my OH calls him Billy Mac...poor horse doent know if he's coming or going lol
grin.gif

I changed my horses name when I bought him...

He was called Socks, but he had only been called that for 6 months as the person I bought him from had only had him 6 months and he didn't really have a name before (probably just called 'that couloured horse') - anyway I renamed him Ignatius (whihc was the name of his previous owner on the passport lol!) - so he is Ig or Iggy for short.

Incidentally.... I thought it was unlucky to change horses bnames, but he keeps his show name - which was the name on his passport - so I reason that I am not actually changing his name - just giving him another nickname
grin.gif

His show name is Hampstead Lad
crazy.gif

Spyder - current boy - didnt like at all at first but now dont mind, its grown on me over the 17 years I've had him!!

My mare is called Ellie (registered as Indian Summer) but I named her that so i like them!

I've had an Emma, a Chippy (WTF but when i was about 6 it was ok!!), a LouLou - courtesy of my mother, an Oscar, an April, there was a pony called Luke at one point, didnt like that name, and then there was Elsie. She got renamed Else!

I hate my horses name but it has stuck and it does suit him, rarely say it or type it - he is normally known as H

he is a big boned gelding, 15.3hh suffolk punch x cob aged 16

and his name is ....... Humphrey !!!!!!!

nick names vary from, Humps, Humpy, big boy or nice and simple, the lad

My two are called Colin and Barbara, surprise surprise both came from the same people!
grin.gif

But we've also had:
Bader, Paddy, Strawberry, George, Pepsi, Shiny, Wispa and Daisy. Also ridden Velvet, Pongo and Penny.

When I used to ride for a friend of mine who bought and sold quite a few horses and ponies, we had a mare in, I think she was called Minty (she was brown for flipping heck's sake!) - I took one look at her ad decided she looked like a boy and called her Dave, in my defense it suited her, she was very masculine, even now we refer to her as "that mare called Dave" (although we sold her with the name Minty).

We also had a lovely ex racer called Emma's Sunrise, ok, bit of a naff name but not terrible, unfortunately my friend was called Emma - sounded a bit childish when trying to compete a 16.2 TB!

My horse came with the name Ludwig! (pronounced Ludvig) I hated the name to start with but it has grown on me, he is a big German warmblood, he really suits it though!

JJ was called Athena when i got her, which i hated and was not going to shout that across the field so i changed it too JJ which definatley suits her, although i would never change a name again as i got the 2 years bad luck with her that everyone says wil happen!!!

Sunsilk's name i think is a brilliant name and definatley suits her, although its a bit long but i refuse to call her Sunny, so she normally ends up being called Pony!

Gem's i love and it suits her as she is a bit precious!
Finally i also love Rusty's name as i chose it!

Horses/ponies I have owned.

Bonny - hated it
Badger- liked that
Queenie - hated that, son changed it to Misty, not much better
Poppy - not bad for a little shettie
Storm - ok-ish (show name- Storm in Teacup)
Desi - Not bad, but is shortened from passport name Desmond
shocked.gif
(who would do that?!!) - Show name - Hot to Trot
Toby - cute for a pony - show name - Northstar

I have just named my ex racehorse Humphrey!!!

Hi, there, it's really strange this, we have a grey mare called misty, we also have a grey Arab called Summer! We have a Sec A called Pumba, so glad we do not have a Timone (lol).

I had to change my KWPN's name because he was registered as Capon de Ville which meant Castrated Cockerel of the Town as far as I know. Who on earth could think up something like that?

My other horse was called Edward when I got him but on his passport his real name was Darcy which I liked much better.

My current pony is Finella of Glendoll, stable name, Nelly. The commentators at shows always get it wrong and call her FEnella rather than FInella but I don't really mind. The PA systems are often a bit crackly anyway aren't they.

Fia is registered as April Reigns - which I hate! - but when I bought her her stable name was Olivia..... which I hated even more!
tongue.gif
I re-christened her as Fiammetta which means 'small fiery one' in Italian, which suits my little ginger person perfectly!
grin.gif

I also have...

Bamboozle! Suits her down to the ground
grin.gif

Outrageous - Shortened to Rage on a daily basis, which is silly as he is the most laid back, forgiving ned ever!
Tortilla, aka Tills or Tilly.
Pancake!!!
grin.gif

Previously I have had a Molly, Lady, Sooty etc, so I think I have done my share of conventional names!

When I gave my mare the stable name of Molly three years ago, I didn't know another horse, animal or person with that name.

I have since discovered that every other horse in the land is called Molly.
frown.gif

Athena sounds like Adina. Do horses really care I wonder?

Humans get lumbered too! My daughter has a lovely Principal at school named Dino Crapsi, say no more.

Robin - hate it. Didn't change it in time, now usually called Dobbin, poor girly.

Sky - didn't suit her, so changed to Lola which is far more prima donna-ish and does suit her.

Dessie - chestnut mare? I don't think so! Flossie( yuk) then new owners changed it to Ruby (double yuk)

Luke - too wussy, he became Zeus.

We currently have-
Penhwnllys Mystic Meg- Mysty - hate the registered name AND the stable name.
Argus Flora- Flora - fine with that
Ballyskeagh Country Girl - Biscuit - OK
Aspen - like that one
Mickey - wouldn't choose it but he is just a 'Mickey'!
The worst I have ever had was my huge ex-racer Noble kinsman whose stable name when I bought him was 'Big Nobby'!! Was immediately changed to Kinny!
And one of my very early ponies Amisfield Starling whose stable name was 'Spuggy' became Jingles!

We used to have at one point, Duke, King and Prince.
crazy.gif
all came with those names and was all a tad pretentious at one point.
Then Blue, who was... blue.. ugly horse, daft name
smirk.gif

and then my little Sea Breeze, she was a connemara from a stud near the coast so they all had names like that. Shortened to Sea-B and got stressy as a kid if people thought it was CB
blush.gif
grin.gif

I currently have a Raggamuffin (Raggs)
and a Mayflower (mouse)

I like those but it'd be a bit lame if I didn't, since I chose them!
blush.gif
tongue.gif

I also have an Arwen, which I like
And a Vatoucha - which I hate but can't find a stable name for her that I like. she gets shortened to 'Vag'!
shocked.gif

Over the last 4 years I have had
Corrie - hated it as sounded like a soap
Portia - actual name was 'Lotus Porsche' which I HATED
Passoa - WTF! Just renamed him 'Troy'. His name is now Hector though as he went to a yard where there was already a Troy!
smile.gif

Quercus - Named him Quirky
smile.gif

I have been really lucky with Names. Hope, Derry, JJ, Angelica.

I have been looking at a lovely little advanced horse in Germany that didn't have a stable name. If we ever talk about it at home its called 'duck' which came from Ugly Duckling (its v v ugly).

We have a dog called Molly too (dog came before horse!) - so to avoid confusion it was always MollyDog and MollyHorse
