I was just wondering how many people live in a place where they lock their house and/or car, I know you need to for insurance purposes. But three of the last houses I have lived in did not lock up for various reasons, and none of the kids have a key to the house, they come in the back door or failing that, in through a window.

My mum does not always lock the house she lives in either.

I don't just lock up when I go out, I lock up when I am in the house too!

Even if you live in a safe area it is better to be safe than sorry. In one of my student houses we once had a lost drunk just wander in which was pretty scary!

I lock up but I live in the middle of Cambridge so I'd be pretty silly not to!

At home in the wilds of Norfolk we never lock the door!

I lock the front door at all times in or out, but in the summer I do leave the back door open so the cat can come and go. I live in a group of five little terrace cottages and I am in the middle so for someone to get in they would have a job with the high trees and fences, well thats what I tell myself. People do tell me I am stupid for doing it but still do :)

Yep my house is locked all the time when we are in or out & that sonly because we was burgaled a couple of years ago while me& my oh were in the house, so I take no chances now :(

Most of the time yes, although tbh our main door (the back door) is a stable type wooden one that is so rotten in its frame it probably wouldn't take much to push it out! We forget to lock up sometimes when we go to bed.

In aus we used to lock up too, as lived on a road near the beach in a unit with bogans next door and hoons going past. When we convert the barn next to our house I'm having a whoing bang screen door on it, as I fell in love with those in aussie :)

Yes, I always lock the house whether I'm in or out. I don't want to take any chances even though I am in the middle of the country!! My cousin was burgled and held at knife point, while her children were playing upstairs, although she lived in London so not quite the same, but a terrifying experience for her. My godmother was also burgled whilst in her house and she was tied up and left in her loft till someone found her!!!!

the patio doors are locked but wouldn't take much to get in through them. the back door won't lock but the dogs are by it so no chance of someone coming in, also we have a very nosey neighbour who can see our back door and knows everything that is happening! our front door is a yale lock so 'locks' when you shut it anyway, i can't use the dead lock as it's broken and recently i've found out that any key will open the yale lock so that's not good but again we have the nosey neighbour who 'guards' the houses opposite!

Yep I have to lock up even when I'm in!! This week alone I have caught 2 different people of the travelling variety climbing my fence & trying to nick a burn bin we have been using, so darent leave the house or car unlocked at all.

Leave mine unlocked 99% of the time

When i go up town with my friends, chances are we lose each other but then as long as everyone heads back to mine they know the door is open so they can get back in if i dont get back til later x

I live in the middle of a cul-de-sac but i'm a trusting person  Its also easier when i go shopping and have loads of bags, otherwise i have to rummage in bags trying to find the key! Dont even know where the key is now! :D

I always think that if a burglar wanted to steal something then they're less likely to come into a house with the door unlocked...and chance facing someone wandering around. More likely to burgle a house with lights off, locked doors etc.

Dont have house insurance either so that doesnt apply :O/

If we remember we lock the front door but quite often forget. I live on a farm in the middle of nowhere and the farmer is usually about with the dogs so pretty safe really.

Probably should lock it more though...just in case!

If you don't lock your house, I would urge you not to say so on a public forum. I think it may be surprisingly easily for criminals to find out who you really are and where you live!!

ALWAYS can't believe people don't!!!
As soon as I'm in my house I lock the door behind me and if I go to put the bins out for the bin men which is down a alley I always double check the front door as my little one is quite often asleep upstairs. I don't think with some off the things that happen you can afford not to, really isn't worth the risk surely

I don't lock mine unless I'm going to be out for more than a few hours. Did once have a man walk in through the front door one evening but the dogs got rid of him.

I always lock the car when I park away from home and I've had 3 car break in's by smashing the windows and 2 stolen.

Our house is down a long drive with security gates and cameras so feel reasonably safe but would never intentionally leave it unlocked other than for a quick stroll with the dog round the paddock. However my husband and I did return from shopping recently to find the front door key hanging from the lock! Oops! Would be a tad embarrassing to say the least to have a walk in burglary bearing in mind we are both police officers!

To the poster who said that burglars would not go in an unlocked door you are very mistaken, I once dealt with three burglaries in one cul de sac overnight where they had simply walked into gardens and tried the back door, grabbed what they could quickly and left. Householders didn't know until I hammered on the door at five am with their discarded handbags. Others just thought they had mislaid things and had no idea they had in fact been burgled.

My opinion - dogs rule the noisier the better!!!

I always lock up, even when I'm inside. One of my dogs can open a door both ways (pushing door away from him or towards him) in seconds and then the other follows! Sure people wouldn't want two loose rotties out on the streets!
Sure they wouldn't want to enter our grounds neither! They would certainly let their presence be known to strangers!!

our house has one of those doors that you cant open from the outside without a key but if you kick it in the right place it opens and we have never in the 9 years we have lived here locked it and when we are at the yard we dont lock the car even if we go out hacking but we are inside the yard but we always lock it outside the house as we dont live in a great area tbh :o

In the wilds of Norfolk, you're more likely to be burgled by a cat/ passing band of pheasants than an actual person :D

It's taken me ages to remember that we not only lock the door here but also set an alarm.
