Mine wear fleece jimjams to dry off in the truck after a wet shoot. That's all, although Pads has no natural coat he never stands still enough to get cold!

Our black lab is very embarassed to admit she has a jacket:eek:

However, when the snow's this deep (on the flattened bits!), and you're 16yrs old, you rather need one)

And, slightly highjacking, can anyone recommend little dog boots? Her paws are splayed now she's an old girl and she's getting snow between her pads, as well as generally cold little totsies.

KalliB - awww massive respect to your lab and if I'm that good at that age then I will be affa fortunate. What a legend of a dog. More piccies please?

Last year beastie really suffered with our 4 feet of snow... feet kept splitting above the nail (webbed feet) ... FH had a few spare rabbit skins (for covering gun dog training dummies you understand...)... so he made rabbit skin mannolos by making side-plate size circle of rabbit skin, pierced holes all around and laced with one of his waxed laces from ice hockey skates- tie it above the fetlock (what on earth is it in a dug?) - beastie was transformed and pranced aroon like a pup.
I've bought some neoprene ones for this winter from canineconcepts.co.uk - but having received them am using the bunny mannolos first if required.

this is her last winter waiting for us to get OUR boots on...

My dog has a pair like these http://www.baxterboo.com/dogs/dog-shoes/all_weather_dog_boots__black.cfm She's worn boots since she was a pup, as she tends to scream--at the top of her lungs, too--if faced with ice. That's a problem, seeing as we live in NYC.

Some dogs don't like to walk in boots; mine whizzes along in them. An alternative are the simple rubber covers by Pawz http://www.amazon.com/PAWZ-Disposable-Reusable-Boots-Orange/dp/B001TRF3QE My other dog will wear these as soon as the salt comes out on the streets. Sadly stories involving electrified grates happen once or twice a year in the city :(

Everyone except the lab has a coat at this time of year when the weathers bad!

Any opportunity to show them off and I cant resist.. So here's Maya modelling hers. She definately needs it as basenjis have very fine coats and thin skin so she feels the cold terribly. Gloucestershire doesnt seem to have the same climate as the African Congo...lol!

And Delilah has a thick fleece one. Its not waterproof like Mayas as she wont walk in the rain anyway. I often use it for the shows for Maya if its really cold, i put it underneath her red one.

Both of those were bought at Crufts, Mayas was about £15 and Delilahs was a bargain at £5.

And Logan the chihuahua got his very first coat a couple of weeks ago. Very thick fleece! This was £9.

Yes, she did - she was a Patterdale, smooth coated, and wore at least one in the winter. I used to make them myself out of old Musto coats =8-O . In her latter years, had hotties and duvets and then at the end, before PTS when she was struggling against dementia but still physically in top nick, an infra red heat lamp, too. She was in an inside run and was always toasty warm underneath her jackets. My design fastened with an underbelly strap which covered most of her tummy. A dog may not have found this quite so handy?

No and they never will.

I seriously do not understand why dogs need to wear coats. It is once again humans trying to anthropomorphosise (sp) pets.

As with a lot of things, it depends on the dog...I'd never put mine in a coat, but I understand why someone with a greyhound or a chihuahua would in this weather.
Yes, I know my dog has a jumper, but that's different :p he had no hair at all on his belly and chest, and it was snowing.

I have, when my German Shepherds are puppies, and I am at the yard all day, I will put a coat on if they are cold. I tent to tie them up in the hay while I muck out, so I know where they are, hence they are still and not zooming round. Fully grown and they are naked :)

Not at present, he goes out in the nip! -he is a lurcher, but one who is supposedly smooth coated and getting more hairy by the day! He roars around enough on walks to keep warm, and then spends the rest of his time sleeping under a duvet. I did put a coat on him when it was minus 14 but he looked so appalled I took it off again. He has looked chilly when he spends the day in kennels, so I might buy him a fleece/jumper, something he cant get off!

do you leave a very fine TB unrugged in cold wet weather

whippets/greyhounds are equivalent to TBs,so are more likely to need a coat of some kind and plus they only have one layer of coat not like a lab and if they race/work you dont want their muscles getting cold..then can cause injuries

just like some TBs fine haired/skinned dogs can loose weight if too cold

i must agree some of the hairer type of dog dont need a coat and i dont like seeing fancy ones and are just for fashion

The Sloughi does as we do lots of on lead exercise in the winter and therefore he can get a bit shivery, however it does only go on him in the extremes of bad weather.

We also used to put one on our old GSD as my mother would walk him and she had cataracts the coat had reflective bits so she was able to see him if he was off the lead with her at night. An incidental advantage was that he was long haired so in the rain it also meant that the stench of wet dog was kept to a minimum!

As the title says really, just wondering how many people put their dogs in coats this time of year?
My little terrier seems to be getting very cold at the moment and everyone says put a coat on her, but I dunno what sort to get. Are there any particular brands or makes that are particularly good? She's a madam for pulling them off as well, so I'd be looking for something hard wearing and secure! Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)

My working BC has two coats as he doesn't have any undefluff, his brothers got it all, and he can't stay warm if he gets wet!
He has a Thermatex airforce blue for cold days and a Thermatex dayglo yellow waterproof for the wet which he wears over the warm coat if cold and wet.
The plus is we have a relatively clean house as we don't have a wet dog!:)

Have never put any of my GSDs in coats, however when my Dad had whippets they did wear coats or they would shiver pathetically.

Incidentally, has anyone noticed all these coat/rug threads have been resurrected today by a poster who seems to be recommending a lot of items from one particular company.

No sorry...that passed me by!
I have only ever had one make of coat as this is the only dog I have had that needed one and the company is just down the road from me!

He is amazing thank you, we got him primarily for my Mum however she sadly passed away in September so he has been reajusting to life without her. He is however doing really well and we have his routine sorted now which is good and he seems happy enough with it. I set up a camera the other day to see if he was getting distressed as he can sometimes be left on his own for 6 hours with a neighbour just dropping in for a wee break. It was the most boring video I have ever watched, all he did was sleep and roll around a bit and then sleep again.

He is however sulking as he is not happy that I will not let him sleep on the bed lying with all his body on the pillows! (I am trying to write an assignment and there is nowhere for me to lean as he had taken all of the space)

Thanks, she had been ill for years so we never thought it would get her.

I'm so sorry to hear that :(

Busta is convinced you are talking about this bit ... "He is however sulking as he is not happy that I will not let him sleep on the bed lying with all his body on the pillows!"

He is still trying to get me to budge up ;)
