Sometimes, but only on a part trotter so I sympathise with the issue, even if I'm not male! It certainly helps with balance when you're back in the saddle, and it's also a good deal of fun, except when they take a dislike to something and you nearly exit out the side door, ooer

spent a year riding bareback on my 17.2hh as we didnt have a saddle... including hacks etc now got trotting bareback to an art and i can stick like glue to him as he has a habbit of putting his head inbetween his knees and rodeoing and rearing and spinning and also spooking sideways so its almost like your left in mid air :o jumping was the only thing i didnt do that often as hes really pingy and strong so i didnt want to fall off :o only problem with bareback for long periods of time is that it teaches you a really bad position :o

I always used to ride my pony bareback! (although I always wore a hat!!:p ) lol.

I have a video somewhere of me jumping 1.10 bareback! Wouldn't do it now, far too scary!

As a kid & teen I spent far more time bareback than in a saddle, & although I started using them more as I got competitive, I still ride bareback a lot now. 7yr old daughter mainly ridden bareback or ponypad, even now due to her hard to fit pony she's still in a ponypad unless rules say she can't. Has no problems galloping & jumping without a proper saddle, so I'm in no hurry to change it. I think bareback riding is brilliant for position & balance. Should be compulsory in riding lessons imo, & I think its a shame its no longer the norm for kids.

Yes I don't have a choice no saddle!! Waiting to see if anything can done to one of them!! Hope so love it to bits!! Just wished beau was a small pony not 17.1hh beast who is now starting to feel very well and testing out my superglue strengh by throwing his toys out of his pram on too many times!! I do feel I might be getting dirtying soon esp after todays ride!! It's nice having him like this as we been though a rough year or so. Now can see light at the end of the tunnel also he only been back into work for a month after a foot op. So a bit freckled at times!!

I ride my mare bareback sometimes, she's so comfy, jogging and loping are lovely. The only thing that puts me off is getting on - not because she is tall, in fact she is tiny, but she's also quite rotund and slippery and last winter I went straight across her back and down the other side in a fit of laughter :)

Riding bareback makes your seat:cool:

Wouldn't ride my youngster but definitely the pony. Used to do loads bareback as a kid as didn't have a saddle or it was needing carried 3 miles to the horse. Often we walked down, rode home, got saddles, hacked out, took saddle home, rode horse back bare back. :D

Good looking lad by the way!

Horse isn't bad either :D:p

Oh yes, love going bareback on my big boy;) - have a bareback pad though otherwise my inside leg always gets filthy:eek: Errrr ... I'll quit while I'm ahead ....

Yes, but its an irish bog cob, with a nice wide back. Do it a lot to turn out, and will ride back up the hill again. Do confess to always sticking a hat on though. Used to do it a lot when schooling as it helps with the balance. He is a good boy, has never bucked when ridden bareback, but his short choppy trot isnt always very comfortable, but his canter is nice, just like a rocking horse.

As a child I rode bareback more, badly, usually walk and canter, trot is horrid bareback.

Now, at pretty much 17hh with high withers he is horrifically uncomfortable, he may be better now as he was skinnier when I got him, a bit too much so, but has built his top line up slightly, so maybe won't be so bad now. Before I ended up with a numb bum waking him to his field, with a turnout rug on... Plus it's a very long way down, and as I get older, I get wimpier too!

Someone posted a great YouTube video on here recently of a last jumping a grey over some HUMONGOUS fences bareback, it was amazing!!!!

I don't really, I have a bony bouncy pony!

I would love to ride bareback more often to improve my seat and balance but feel so insecure... Is there any way to get better balance some other way so I don't just feel like I'm going to slide off? In theory have the perfect horse for it - cob but with a bit of shape so not like trying to sit on a barrel :D Friend has galloped him bareback in the field and he was a star but I'm far too chicken for that!

Also, I wonder whether it's comfortable for him? He has no problems carrying me usually and has never objected to being ridden bareback but it feels like I'm sat directly on his spine and since there's no saddle holding me, any lack of balance is directly onto his back and skin...

I agree with Lego, never tried riding bareback but not sure if I'm confident enough to do it. If I lose my balance the first thing I go for is the saddle to hold onto, so I'd be out the side door if I tried bareback!

I'd love to once my boy grows up a bit! Hard enough riding him with a saddle atm! :p

I love riding bareback though, and I used to find my seat improving tenfold when in a saddle. Weird as I can't stand riding without stirrups!

I have a suede saddle pad which is almost bareback. I am only just really starting but i like want to do it more but sadly being 5ft2 with a 16.3 horse it is not easy. Tips would be welcomed.

I sometimes school bareback (generally only if i'm having a bit of a mooch session though cos madam is still a little unbalanced in corners in canter and I don't trust myself not to fall off without a saddle!) and often hop on and ride up to the field - any riding is out the window currently though cos went to hop on to ride to the field last weekend and my mare moved, lost my balance and kersplatted on the floor - currently sporting a sling and a massively damaged/ bruised/ yucky arm that won't straighten properly!
