Do you take your phone when you hack?

I always take my phone with me, just in case. I also always have it on me whilst schooling because quite often I'm the only person on the yard. If I have a coat it's in the inside pocket, if my gilet then the outside phone pocket and if nothing then in the little pocket of my jods.

Mostly no-one knows if I've gone up to the yard so if anything happened I'd have no hope!

I am never without my mobile, shoved down my bra! It's no use attached to the horse! The other day I came across an accident where a girl had come off and the medics thought she'd broken her leg. She had been able to phone from where she was lying - though the field is right next a little lane it might have been an hour or two before the next rider or dog walker came along.

Also, always put ICE on your contacts (stands for In Case of Emergency). Give as the number next of kin, or your yard, or whoever. The emergency services know to look for this if you are unconscious. You can have ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc. so they are sure of being able to contact someone who knows you.

I always carry my phone as very rarely does anyone know I am out, let alone know where I am going. I attach it to my boot just above my ankle. Proves interesting if anyone calls me though!

I keep my phone with me at all times when I'm at the yard and riding. It's a small private yard and I'm nearly always there on my own.. I feel quite vulnerable if I don't have my phone to hand! Never know what may happen around horses, or what loonies are around!

ALWAYS take it with me. I am also signed up to a scheme called RideAlert. Jasper has a tag on his saddle, I have a sticker on my hat under the silk, and I wear a wristband if I go out alone or on longer rides.

You store all your details and your horses details with them so if you should part company with your horse, they can alert the necessary people and tell them of any allergies/special requirements etc. It gives great peace of mind.

ALWAYS. Last summer while hacking out, the girl I was with had a nasty fall and was left unconscious in the middle of the road (and by road, I mean very quiet country lane). She had her phone, but it was in her jods pocket and I couldn't have got to it. Luckily I'd stuffed mine down my boot and was able to ring both the ambulance, and a friend who could come and get 2 spooked horses so I could go in the ambulance (not to mention girl's mum and dad, my OH "..so I'm on my way to Frenchay.."). Horrible situation.

I always take my phone with me i predominantly hack out on my own i do tell people where im going if someones at the yard, however being a small yard its very rare theres someone there so my OH is told if i call to always answer just in case ....:D!!! It does worry me though as the mob signal isnt very good in the surrounding area but at least i will be able to phone 112!!!

Ditto - I would also add make sure your horse is ok with the ring tone or put it on to silent. I would also make sure you dont have a password and have your ICE number on in case you realy come unstuck and someone needs to find out who you are

Ditto this ICE is fantastic and all emergency services personnel are trained to look for it as well as more people becoming aware of it i also have ICE Vet just in case should i be knocked unconcious and horse needs help.

Without fail in my pocket in case I fall off as I always hack alone. Also have a dog tag in my hat and one on saddle with name address nearest vets, emergency contact.

Many years ago before I had a mobile, it was my Mum that insisted that I got one as I was riding alot on my own and most of the time no one knew where I was going or for how long. Now I ride out with a friend and always take my phone with me. If it's not for me, you never know what you may come across out hacking!

yep always take my mobile as i always hack out alone, generally round the farm but that doesn't mean the chances of me falling off and needing help are any less than if i was out on the road! In fact with the way the cows have been behaving lately i did have to phone a friend on the farm to rescue me and my daughter from a nosey bunch of steers!!
I have a little pouch that goes round my waist to keep my phone in if i don't have a jacket or something with pockets. reading this thread tho has made me think i may get some kind of id tag with my mobile number on to put on my saddle so that the mad mare could be returned to me if she did bog off!!

I always take one, if i am with a group we always make sure one of us do in case of accident or emergency. even on sponsored rides.

Or do you tell someone where you are going/how long you are likely to be when you hack? I'm ashamed to admit that I do neither :o I do have a little pouch that I can clip onto the D-ring of my saddle which carries my phone but I'm always in the dilemma of "If I keep it in my pocket and come off, I'll land on it and smash it! vs "If I clip it to the saddle and I come off and he runs off, I'm left without my phone" so I tend to leave it behind so that I don't have the mental anguish of wondering which is the better of the two options. We have 500 acres of farmland hacking around my yard so I don't actually leave the farm's premises, but I do sometimes wonder that if I came off and lay unconscious, how long it would be before someone noticed.....

I take mine on principle if something happens! However, I do get the what if I smash it thing too lol :D I haven't been out hacking for a while but I hopefully will be soon and thinking I may buy a smashable pay as you go phone and divert the calls from my main one :D

I have just returned home after a stay in intensive care. I had multiple rib fractures, multiple fractures of the shoulder a punctured lung and internal bleeding. I was hacking out alone when my horse shyed and slipped, falling on me. I was able to dial 999 and vital time was saved because i had my phone. Please NEVER go out with out one.

Always take mine on a hack, and always take it down the field when I go to check the horses, it takes a good few minutes to walk back up to the yard, so it's reassuring to know that I can call one of the other owners for help if any of the horses are found to be injured / escaped from the field etc etc. and we can be injured whilst leading our horses just as easily as whilst riding them - never go anywhere without my phone actually.

Yes, I always take my phone with me. And most of the time, I tell someone whereabouts I am going (or give them a rough idea as I am known for setting out and making my mind up as I go along!) I also tell them roughly how long I will be.

I always take it with me but probably more habit than me actually thinking I have to have it with me. After all, as someone said, we did used to survive without them 9i did used to take 10p for the phone box though! Lol).

However, my phone did come in handy when my horse slipped on the road with me (in walk may I add) and I ended up breaking my collar bone. I rang my parents to let them know "I think, er, i've broken my collar bone"!. They are very handy. I don't worry about breaking mine, it never crosses my mind but then i dont have a flash phone. Also most phones are pretty robust really - I ran over a previous phone in my car and that survived! Lol

I never leave the yard without it; I always have it with me even if just spuddling up to the field or whatever, or more particularly in the yard at night in case there's some weirdo around. Incidentally, I keep my horse here at home with me but we live in quite a remote spot.

OP; just a thought, sorry if I'm stating the obvious ..... but your phone won't be any good to you if you fall off and you're lying somewhere injured if its attached to your horse!!!! You need it on your person in an emergency not clipped to the saddle and galloping home like merry bvggery!!

Yes.

It's password protected due to work, so I have a sticker on the back with relevant names on.

I also have a pretty and biggish dog tag attached to a D ring. It has three phone numbers on it, just in case.

I always carry my mobile. I ride on my own alot of the time and if I come off I know I can get some help. I feel safe with my mobile as well as there can be some nutters out there !!
You could always put it down in your boot, I do. The other day I did two rounds of showjumping with phone in my boot, i forgot it was there lol.
I also take my phone to events as well.

What a great idea to put it in your boot! I always have my phone with me when riding alone even in the school (I also text my OH when I start and when I get off- paranoid? Me?). But I put it in my tiny jodphur pocket which I'm not supposed to as I have an air vest and your not supposed to have anything between the vest and your person in case the vest squashes it so now I will put it in my boot- thanks for the idea Kayfm :)

I always take my phone with me. I normally ride by myself and by the time I arrive at the yard there is no one else around to be able to tell I am going out. I must admit the only time I had an accident I was knocked unconscious so a phone wouldnt have helped me, luckily that day I was with someone :)

Ooh, thanks for the replies... never thought to tuck it in my boot (but then I do have rather large calves :o) Just for the record, I ought to add as well that I'm 48 and managed perfectly well for 38 years without a mobile phone... I'm not one of those people who let a cell-phone rule her life, unfortunately, but I take on board the sensible comments you've all made... thanks :)

yes always! i fell off and got knocked out and when i came round i had to drag myself up a fence to chuck myself back on as i had two complete dead legs, then rang my dad to come get me off the horse because i couldnt walk:p

I always take my mobile with me (I prefer to hack alone, usually) - it goes into the pocket of my hiViz tabard which I always wear, even if I'm only going to be on the farm's land.

I'm 49 so have lived most of my life without a mobile, but it seems to me a bit of a no-brainer to have something with you that could potentially save your life for no extra effort.

I always take mine with me, I brought a phone case made from woof wear which has a clip and velcro strap so I can attach it to my saddle or boot, I tend to go for the boot option as I figured if I come of and fall off my phone would be attached to the horse LOL x

I usually take mine. I bought one of those arm-strappy things, but that kept sliding down my arm while riding---v. annoying!---so now it's either in jodhs pocket, which is awkward, or I just sling my endurance kit over my shoulder, which has a mobile pouch on the strap.

Yes I always do. If I am riding my TB then for safety reasons, but if riding my cob I use it for fitness reasons as it has an app that tells you how far/fast we have gone.
