Opinions are like bum holes, everyone has one.
A friends horse was the most average thing you have ever seen on 4 legs. Tried to sell it at 100 level but no takers. It then kept trucking up the levels and went round badminton and Burghley albeit slowly. It was trainable, most importantly it stayed sound for years so could keep being trained and going up the levels and it always had a good jump. Plus I am convinced because it was so uncompetitive and ran round in its own abilities that’s what helped keep it sound.
I have just sold a horse who has been a super star since day 1. Not easy but had all the attributes. Just needs to stay sound and she will go 4*. Her sister has been a slower burn but is getting there.
Anyway the above all have good breeding, good conformation and are good athletes. They are average horses but not average horses as bred for the job. I have had a lot of average horses and they top out at novice or don’t stay sound and realistically those who are meant for the job stay sounded as it’s easier for them.
