Do you think your horse will start coming in soon??

Mines been in the last 2 nights cos its so wet, but if it stops raining so much hell go back out with a LW rugs, he shows so need to try and keep the coat thinner for as long as poss. Ill prob clip him mid october as hes already starting to get quite sweaty when my daughter rides, he will then be in at night and out in the day till spring time.
My other section a last year stayed out till december with her body clipped but legs and half a head in, with a heavy TO rug, but this ponies on loan and the agreement stipulates he have to stable at night from when the weather gets bad or hes clipped!!

Got lots of grass so mine will stay out as long as possible, if not all winter, appropriately rugged. The TB has access to his stable to get out of the weather but to be honest he doesn't seem bothered. Three stayed out all winter last year, even through the snow, used plenty of hay but would have used the same amount if they had been stabled. They had a field shelter and water and were quite happy.

enfys - wow, bet that keeps you busy :p x

;) It is a lot easier when most live out, no mucking out, no poo picking, round bales and automatic heated water troughs. Most don't even have rugs.

Stalled horses will be turfed out at 5am and I'll have stalls to clean when I get back from work at 3 (Thankfully work is only maternity cover until December) ...hardest chore is trying to keep the house in any sort of order:(

Yeah i can imagine as all out so so much easier for you :D Lol awwww bless. Only a few more months to go :p x

My 2 are back to wintering out again this year. I have just been down to put a rug on the oldie as it was absolutely chucking it down and we really struggled to keep her weigh on last winter. So making sure she is well rugged and fed from early this year.

Nope mines will just get rugs on. They are not coming in until I really have to. Kia gets stiffer with standing in and eowyn weaves so easier out than in!!

Plus I have lots of grass still so as long as they are out no feeding :D

Thoroughly jealous of you all, imagine a summer without mucking out...mine is in at night all year, i think when i come to buy the next one something that is not so spoilt will definitely be required :p

nope - they won't come in until the 1st November as usual. and they'll go out again on the 1st april. they're already being fed, they'll be rugged as of middle of october, clipped the week before hunting starts, and in from the 1st November. 1st of april they go out again, rugged and fed as necessary.

I wintered mine out no problem last year and hoping to do the same again.

Only concern is that last winter was so freakishly cold that all our fields were iced over for 2 months solid so no worry about mud fever, cracked heels etc. If its a really wet winter and I can't manage with all the mud I might need to give in and bring him in for a couple of months :(

my super heavy tough hairy baby cob goes into his stable for his "light supper". yesterday he went in, placed himself carefully on the straw, and fell asleep  I know he should be rufty tufty, but he does love his stable !

He won't be coming in (but don't tell him ;) ) till it's wet, cold, and his legs really need to dry off overnight. Or may be sooner if he manages to soften me up - which he almost did yesterday. sm xx

Thanks for replies peeps :D It great to know what other people do :D

Just out of interest the people who's horses are in at night threw out the year is that because you are made to or your own choice?

Thanks xxxx

Own choice. I used to keep him out 24/7 in the summer but he always comes in with something wrong eg cuts, lame, chipped bones!! dont no what he be's doing over night so for his own safety he is in at night :D

The weather is mean't to be getting rubbish now and sadly looks like our summer is over! I will be bringing my mare in soon probably next 2 weeks as it is getting quite damp and cold at night! :o

Archie lives out 24/7/365. For him it is the best management to ensure his wellbeing. He hates being in his stable for any length of time and I am sure living out is what keeps him healthy, both mentally and physically. He is checked every day, has plentiful food, both grass and ad-lib hay and during the colder months a good feed, is rugged accordingly against the elements and he seems to cope really well.

I sometimes wish I could snuggle him down in a cosy stable with thick straw and a roof over his head but know it just wouldn't suit him. I will never say never, though, and when the time is right I am sure he will come in but for now, and the forseeable future years, he will be staying out.

Ours will normally change over to coming in at night in the first week of November, but will come in sooner if it is horrendous. They are out at night in sheets if rain is due and seem okay at the moment - it is still quite warm, although wet at times.

Im hoping to keep Arion out till he absolutely has to come in at night if weather or ground is too horrid/wet/muddy. He has mild arthritis in his hock so I find being out 24/7 better for him and he doesnt get stiff at all. I have been building up his piggy oil and sulphur in preparation for wet as he is prone to mud fever although hasnt had a bad attack of it since I started using the oil so fingers crossed. It will just be a case of wait and see - I would prefer him out 24/7/365 but am prepared to bring him in at night for hay/feed/drying off.

It's already SEPTEMBER!!!!

Its dark by eight and weather starting to turn nasty :( cold nights and wet days brrr.

Do you think that you will be stabling your horse/s (if stabled in winter) earlier than other years?

I think that i will be stabling mine soon!

Thanks In Advance

I am hoping I can keep my boy out as long as possible. After last four years (total six years of owning him) of being out in the day in at night and this year trying it the other way round I can't believe how much easier it is for both him and me! I am really loathe to start the massive muck out routine now :(
