I was asked this by by non-horsey friend at uni - in respect to riding btw

We were talking about horse-riding and he asked me, so, you have to watch your weight then?

I actually didnt know how to respond, so I just said yeah, i do

(in case anybody asks, we are a very close uni course, we have "naked tuesdays"

I actually dont, although I know I am heavier than I want to be but still, I dont watch my weight for riding, more for appearances sake

I love my food too much

So do you watch your weight for riding?

Never have done but I have put on weight over the last couple of years and do worry that I will become to heavy for Charlie. Still haven't done anything about it though

I just got back from 2 hours at the gym! - i like to keep my weight down for riding and i have to wear white jodphurs so often it reminds you to keep trim - they hide nothing! Also i feel i have to be fit to give the horses the best chance round a course- especially cross country!
Personally i dont like seeing really overweight people riding unless they are on big hunter types - i just feel really sorry for the horses - there was a really huge lady at my old yard that used to ride a 15'2 arab and she couldnt balance at all and just banged up and down on her back and held onto her mouth to stay on - the horse now cant be ridden for constant bucking and behaviour problems.

I don't deliberately try to keep my weight down for riding, but since I've had Scooby and been riding every day I've lost half a stone!

I would like to be able to lose enough weight to ride more different horses though - at the moment there are only a few horses at the RS I can ride because I'm heavy, and one day I'd love to be light enough to ride an Arab!

No but then again i'm 13 and have been told by my parents that I shouldn'tworry at the age of 13, still not convinced haha

but I don't think i have anything to worry about, being 5'4/5'5 at around 7 stone

would like to drop off a little bit and tone up but really not too bothered

I would like to be back down the nine stone I was when I first got Velvet and before I had two kids. Now I'm 10 and a half but she's a middle weight 15h cob so I don;t think she's too concerned. Would love to be toned and skinny though.

Sort of. I don't get to ride enough in winter to keep my weight down so I do Body Pump.

I have to excercise more though, eating less is not an option!

never...i'm 5'10 and weigh just under 9st...so havent ever had that problem tbh...i love the big choc trifles that tesco and asda do too much I can eat a whole one to myself...yum yum...for my tum tum..i'm chocoholic too...

Agree that he was prob thinking about jockeys.

Having said that I do like it when I'm in a 'thin' phase (8 stone something for me) and can ride the little ones too. At the moment I'm over 9 stone (which is healthy for my height) but wouldn't want to be much heavier for the Unsuitable Chestnut Arab.

If anyone is overweight they are almost certianly not going to be as in control of their bodies (less muscle per kg of person) so it probably won't make them ride as well as they could. We don't have to all be stars but I think we sould all be considerate to our mounts and stay relatively in-shape. As well as riding in-proportion animals.

Ooo and forgot to add now I have finished my Orange Chocolate Snaps that I so Zumba too now which burns 500 -1000 calories per work out - it is ace fun too

yes I watch it go up and down, But unless it goes over a certain point for more than a couple of weeks I don't bother. I would like to lose a stone but being on steroids its impossible.

Definitely. I don't ride at my best carrying a load of excess lard. I am tall but have never been one of these naturally skinny minnies (so jealous of those that are!!)
To do my horse justice I like to keep fairly fit and in shape - and keep them in that sort of shape too. I rode TBs for many years so was conscious of it for that. Always put on half a stone over the winter when not riding and competing as much but soon lost it come spring

i do and riding and yard work helps with it a lot, but im very very paranoid about my weight anyway...and kinda down atm cos i know ive put on weight since my accident cos i cant do anything

choc was my dairy product of choice too!!

I do a bit but dont have much problem with it I am pretty constant though have put a bit on while my arm was off games. I only do because if I expect the pone to throw himself over jumps I am sure he appreciates it if I weigh less!

Yep I watch it go up and up - I'm dead good int he week and by Friday I will have lost a couple of pounds only to put it back on over the weekend - I need to start riding again as I know that helps and I started back at the gym again on Tuesday after a couple of months of laziness - me and my house mate have decided that if we shower at the gym the water bill will go down and our membership money will be justified ! I do like to be slim full stop not just for riding

Also tried weight watchers but I don't need to pay someone a fiver to know that chips make me fat !!!

Always worries me. I'm 6'1 so my 14 stone doesn't make me look more than slim. My horse is 16'1 and a touch, but quite strong. Always thinking I should drop a stone - but i love cake and beer.

I'm 5'10" and "normal" weight. I was concerned when I was backing my youngster though (who is a 16hh HW hunter type). I lost a few pounds for that!! He's on holiday now though so I can enjoy my christmas without feeling guilty!!

No I don’t, but really I should. However both mine are sturdy types which can take a lot more then my 11 stone I’m sure. But next year I am really going to try and lose weight because I want to have a go at a BE80, so need to be really fit (and therefore need to lose weight).
