hi ..i have always wet my horses feed in winter ..but this summer he as only been having top spec lite on its own.. didnt really think i should have to wet as is similar to small nuts . but someone mentioned should always wet as there is a chance of choke .. what do you do ?

My horses are fed soaked oats and soaked sugar beet with oil and vinegar so they have pretty damp food any way. In the past they were just fed straight, dry oats with no ill effects.

yeah always

even if its a tiny taster...takes 2 seconds to do! x

Always wet it, just been something i have always done.

Through the winter he has sugar beet so use that instea of water.

yes always, if he doesnt have sugar beet then he has water, he rushes his food sometimes so he would be more prone to getting choke, especially if it was dry

I never used to but now I am obsessed about feeding wet feeds

and have got everyone else on the yard just as obsessed!

yep always have done - but i've an oldie whose teeth aren't gd so he has it even wetter than the others. all mine get fast fibre which has to fed with added water anyway.

Marley always does on the rare occasion when he gets a little taster when he comes in.

Teddy wont eat wet feed, unless its A&P calm and condition which is the ONLY feed he will eat a bowl of, so that and some chaff and he wolfs it down so it gets wet that way

Always. As with so many others who have replied, my mare had an episode of choking so it's not worth the risk IMO. FWIW I also soak her hay to stop her choking.
My YO's mare had a really bad episode of colic a few weeks ago, and YO was advised to make the mare's feeds into soup - she is now paranoid and gives all her horses soup!

Having spent 4 years soaking feed for a very elderly and toothless pony, the amount of liquid it absorbs, and the volume it increases by as a result is frightening - imagine it doing that in a horse's stomach.
