Millie had known her name for a long time but it's only recently that I have realized that she will come when called.

Yesterday after hunting we fed her on the yard, as she was taking ages to eat (didn't like the yucky supplement :p) I un-clipped her lead rope and left her to it. She wondered off to get a drink and when she had finished I called her and she came straight to me (baring in mind the feedroom/haybarn/field where all within her sights).

I then left her loose until we turned her out and she stayed near us grazing. When I started walking towards the field I called her name and again she came straight to me. I thought it was really sweet :)

Quite often I will leave her loose when I am haying/feeding the other horses and she will never go far but I didn't think she would actually come when she was called!

Charlie and Pixie will always come over to me if I go into the field but I wouldn't say they know their names, I quite often shout 'come on Trouble' or 'Come on you Silly Bugger' etc and they'll still come :D

So do your beasties know their names and would they come when called?

Most of our horses know their nicknames.
I can shout Baggage across the field and Hattie will look up but not Gypsy.
If I shout Yippy cob, Gypsy will look up.
Inka answers to Stinky but I think she would answer to anything shouted at her.

well paddy has only been paddy since he came to me back in sept and he know what his name is. i wonder what he tells other horses his name is???
if i call him he pricks his ears forward always comes when i call him and neighs when he sees me or my car (as you can tell very clever lol!!)

Andy does recognise his name, although is known to suffer from selective deafness, particularly when he doesn't want to stop eating :D

Melly knows her 'nick name' better than herr actual name of Melody...but will look up to either...generally only comes over if I wave polo's tho! Seren responds better to 'Seri', I dont think she had had her name too long before I got her!
Both my girls whicker and talk when I speak to them, but I think its more tone of voice....they always come and see whats going on if Im in the field and I can leave them untied and wandering calling them back when ness - although usually its 'Oi what you up to' that make them return! lol!

Alfie responds more to 'Alf ' , and marco knows his name. My horses are quite stubborn and don't really want to work so although they look up when called they usually make me trek over to them rather than come down to me! Unless its breakfast or dinner time, then they'll be waiting by the gate, funny that!

Sunny definitely responds to my voice rather than his name. But at bringing in time, if I go to the gate and shout "Sunny - tea time" it seems that there are 8 other horses in with him who are also called Sunny!!!

Yes my 3 know their names and always come to call, although Bijou seems to have some sort of radar for when I'm at the yard and is at the gate before I get a chance to call her. Knowing their names is handy when it is dark so I don't have to go traipsing through a muddy field in search of them.

I have the same problem. 5 horses called Star, who all want to go in for tea. :D

Snowy doesnt answer at all to snowy or look at me, but if i say/shout Ugly he comes straight over and if hes in the stable whinnys or whickers :)!
Toby didnt answer to toby, but came over to fattie.... mabye i should start calling horses by their actual names!

Both of yours know thier names. They come in the way you shout them. I.e King, Roger, King would come down first then Roger and the other way.

I can bring King in with just my voice, he'll walk at the side of me and stop when I stop and walk when I walk, he's only 5!! :) It's our fav party trick, sad I know!:o

I can do this with Bella and she is only 18 months old. I see it as the sign of a good bond but thats just my opinion :p

Bella knows her name and generally comes to call even after she has been fed :D

Mine comes when he is called but I wonder if I could call him anything as long as it was in an encouraging voice and I have some treats! But I definitely think he knows his name as when I am talking about him to other people and he is within hearing distance he always gives me one of those "Paddington Bear Stares" as if to say what are you saying about me mum :D

I wouldn't say that my horses know their names/nicknames. They know my voice and it I call them they respond to that.

Zoom knows her name and always comes to call. Monty knew his name too but it was a running joke that when my friend Vicky would feed him for me she would shout Monty about ten times and he wouldn't look up.

She would then shout 'look at that gorgeous handsome boy. What a stunner! I've never seen such a handsome boy'

He would then come trotting over for his tea! :D
