Was speaking to a good friend today whose 14 yr olddaughter was out hacking her pony yesterday afternoon (she finishes school at 2.30 on thursdays)..she had on her jacket which has embroidered on the back "Cassie B*****" and Barney.

A van pulled alongside..window down, and a fella inside called out her name..something like "hi there Cassie, you OK"..

she just replied "yes, thank you" and smiled..assuming she knew who it was..

He then said to her, "do you know me"?..which she replied "no, i dont think so"..he then said, "well, i don't know you either, but i now know your name because its on the back of your jacket, best get your Mum to get you a new one, if you don't want strange men talking to you"

My Friend was horrified...and hadn't thought of that scenario when buying the jacket..it has now been burnt..

Food for thought, don't you think?
 
Scary thought. I also don't like seeing kids in embroidered jackets, it seems every Tom, Dick and Harry have them and I think if I'm honest they look common now.

I do however have thermatex's with my boy's show names on, but they are still in the packets as I don't want them to get dirty lol

Good advice that! Isn't she lucky that it was someone who said that rather than the alternative. I've heard of so many instances (in the US) where kids have been taken because they were wearing something with their name on it and someone told them that their >insert relative< said for the stranger to give them a ride home.

NEVER send your kids out advertising who they are.
 
i think the rugs are good for competitions, personally i dont have one.. if i could get round to it and have some money then i would !!!

i think jackets look very strange when you see people out hacking with "jerry and columbo" on the back.....
i think for competitive riders who want to get noticed they are great, (but only if your sponsors name is above it!!!)
 
Thats very scary! I've seen alot that have the stables on also which are a cause for concern as could then be traced. I have a personalised jacked but only wear it competing... not so sure about that now though! Thanks for the heads up
 
Mine has numnahs embroidered - but as they were expensive they're kept as 'best' - she's only allowed to use them in competitions where appropriate ie not at pony club or showing, and never just on a hack, we've plenty of cheap Lidl ones etc otherwise.
 
I've got one saddle pad (for our bestest Sunday wear;)) with my horse's name on it. I don't think anybody would be able to pronounce it, though.

I'm considering now embroidering some jackets with my name, just so I remember who I am:D and to live in hope some man would like to chat me up...;)

But seriously, I think it is a bit dangerous to let your children out into the big world alone and with their details plastered all over them.
 
I'm sixteen, and have several hoodies with my name on them - but I never wear them without something over them unless I'm at school/friends house etc. I live in London and don't want some random weirdo calling my name..

I'd love one for competitions etc, been wanting one for ages, my friends have them - just need a horse's name to put on it :P

My jacket says "Hannah ........." and "WHW Puzzle" underneath it. But I'm 20 and extremely proud of my foalie and her roots.
 
Mine has my first name and nothing else. I know not to get in cars with strangers, and being the size I am, riding the horses the size I ride I think i'll be ok. If there was a situation, where a stranger would be needed to pick me up. Me and mum have a password which if the situation occurs, the driver will have to tell me, before I get near the car.

no because I would imagine a parent would be driving them...
But I wouldn't be happy with a 8/9/10 year old hacking/on their own with a name plastered on them, especially if child is not street wise. Too easy for someone to get into a convo with them
Plus not really a "new" paranoia seeing as Mum banned me from a necklace 18 years ago

Not sure I'd want a 8 year old hacking out on their own with or without their name on them!!
 
My daughter is 16 now and 2 years ago I got her a jacket with her name and pony's name on it and a saddle cloth with her name on it. She really only wore them when she jumped BS.

However, now she's too old for pony BS and the jacket is getting on a bit and so she does wear it out hacking etc - however I think the writing is quite small and is in italics and a driver would have to get right up close behind her to read it! Plus her name is unusual (not Emma or Alice or another frequently used name) and so I don't think anyone would be able to call out to her.
 
At school, we have parents who enquire about getting their children's names embroidered on their school clothes....and we discourage this, for the same reason OP points out. Safety is in anonymity, sadly.

I think it looks quite tacky most of the time, but I doubt it constitutes a serious safety risk. Strangers can pick up a childs name from any number of places if they choose to (from friends/parents shouting it out even if ALL written sources were eliminated).

Someone knowing your name is only a risk if you are inclined to trust that any adult who know it can teach you what to do. Wierd men can talk to children regardless of whether they know their names, and a child that is old enough to go out on their own really ought to have been taught enough about the risks that they dont go beyond polite conversation with someone just because that someone happens to know their name.


The vast majority of child abductors know their victims first anyway, so I think there are far more useful steps people could be taking to protect their children (perhaps one of them being putting them out there in named gear all the time so they clearly get the message that someone knowing your name doesnt mean they are safe)!

Personally I think it's rather chavvy and tacky. For those who say "it's too small for a driver to read" then what is the point of emblazoning the name on the jacket - isn't it for people to look at say "oh there's so and so". I've always had the opinion people do it hoping that their potential as the next amazing SJer will not go unnoticed. Don't seem to see it as much at BE:)

My daughter would die at the thought of promoting herself to the world

Fully agree,it is very tacky in my opinion,my kids have never had it on there ponies,i most certainly have not,i dont even call my fat boys name out riding either,as been stopped a few times asking if i would sell him,even my farriers dad has asked me how much.
 
Sami has one for when she is showing, keeps her show gear clean when faffing before going in the ring, and has her name and ponies 'proper' name on it. She has never hacked in it but that is more luck than good management (it being shocking pink with lime green text) and she is 18 now. It isn't something I would have ever thought about but we intended getting the girls (5, 7 and 8) the same jackets this year with their ponies show names on, will think again after this. Unlikely it would ever happen to them as they would never be alone but certainly not worth taking the risk and not something I would have thought about really.
 
I have a jacket with my name on it, but I am not a child. Also, it is mainly to advertise my business as a groom/rider. I also have a numnah with mine and my pony's name on.

I do think it is a bit risky for kids, but then lots of people have their names on embroidered on them for all different types of sports and a lot of school uniform is labelled with the child's name. I think if somebody wanted to find out a child's name that much then they would find out in some way regardless as to whether they were wearing an embroidered jacket.
