I'm not an expert on feet, but when i first got my boy he had some really crappy feet, they still are 3 years down the line, cracked and dry, but there much better than what they were and a much better shape. My farrier put double clips on to 'hold his foot together' so the weight of his body doesnt cause his feet to crack anymore. So that, a whole load of stockholm tar, cornucrescine, and bags of patience, his feet are finally improving. Does anyone else have double clips on there shoes for the same reason or different reasons?

Had a mare many years ago, that the farrier put double clips on. Turned out she deformed hoof but you wouldn't have known it, looking at it, she did go lame after awhile, so put her in foal 3 times and seems it was herediraty as she passed it on. But my farrier kept them sound all of their lives.:)

I take it you mean toe clips. My horses have had double toe clips on the front for years now ( and hind but that's nothing new) It's not for any remedial reasons either. It just balances the foot better.

well i just let the farrier get on with it, i just thought hes the expert he knows what hes doing. But it got me thinking cause one of the horses from the livery yard i go to also had double toe clips, so when i asked the owner why she said i dont know, the farrier just does it. but when she changed farrier they said the horse didnt need them as its for horses who trip alot. so i was quite puzzled on the reasons for these double toe clips.

Do you mean side clips like on the hind feet? They are quite good for a quick fix but they can make the hoof boxy and contracted if used long term. Your Farrier might have a very good reason for using them but I would ask him if the horse could go back onto toe clips if I were you and then at leats he can explain his reasoning to you.

Daisy had them to help her foot confirmation as she was too long in the toe if she had normal toe clips on.

oh i know they get the side clips/ double clips (sorry people round my area call them double clips) on the back feet, but mine gets double/side clips on the front right hoof cause he had a major crack. He has began to move one of the side clips closer to the front of the hoof..if that makes sense? So when he gets his shoes replaced the clip is shaped at different position on the shoe (man i wish i had some kind of draw button so i could draw a diagram XD)

Side clips allow the shoe to be set on further back, therebye allowing the toe to be cut back and the heels really supported. I have just got a TB in for sale that has the most horrendous feet - seriously long toes, absolutely flat feet, and the shoes he came with were far too small, stuck on the end of his toes and no heel support at all. Previous owner said his feet were **** and he was always foot sore. One shoeing from my farrier, with side clips, the correct size shoe and the horse looks fantastic. His feet look good, very well balanced, heels supported and the correct length toe. Brilliant. Side clips can work wonders on badly shod horses, and in the hands of a fantastic farrier can be used long term as a permenant solution.

ahhh intresting! actually now that you mention heels, my farrier said that mine doesnt have alot of heel becuase he puts alot of weight on his heels, especially when going down hill. so that was probably one of the reasons why. I totally agree, my farrier is very skilled and has done wonders, im just scared in case he retires and i cant find one just as good XD

My girl has double clips on front as when she came to me her front feet were quite splayed,so to bring them back in gradually farrier uses double clips, can already see a real improvement after 3 months. However once foot is in correct shape, farrier has said will return to single clip

Never heard of it, one of mine has terrible feed, forever cracked, the farrier puts groves above the cracks to stop them going any future.

Ours always have two toe clips, with supported heels and rolled toes. I think that this is the only way our farrier shoes now, as in his opinion it is the best way for the horse to be shod. As he is the expert in feet, I leave him to it. :)

Our farrier uses double clips on both our horses, but for different reasons. Tom to support his foot to prevent the sidebone from causing problems (been sound now for 5 years with it!), and he uses them on Ron to stop his foot spreading too much as it grows, also it changes the breakover point and stops him overreaching and pulling the shoes off.

you have to be careful with front toe clips as they alter the blood flow in the foot which becomes evident in the coronet band at the front of the foot, it like dips down and growth in the foot can alter, thats what i have been told anyway, mine now has shoes with clips on and the growth is much better. but as has been said, these guys are the experts and they no what they are doing and as long as she is sound and your happy then i would not worry, for **** feet i use Better 4 Hooves as recommened by master farriers as customers alike, and PlusVital dressing, specifically designed for irish thoroughbreds, difficult to get hold off but brilliiant!!
