Its quite an appealing thing to do, but for me we have to go along lanes so I would never risk it as I think its far too dangerous....but does anyone else ever hack out in snow? if so where do you go - are you lucky enough to be able to avoid roadwork all together?

last year I just went for a plod round the fields, no one had walked on the snow yet so it was pretty stable

We did in February - luckily we can get almost straight into a load of woodland without having to go on the roads at all. It was lots of fun

All the time when I was younger.
Including a mercy mission when everyone got snowed in and we rode 2 hours over fields and drifts to the nearest village and brought provisions back for various snowed-in neighbours. Was the absolute making of my nervy youngster of the time!!

Dont tempt me!

My yard is at the top of a rocky hill and when the ice gets on it it's awful

So no hacking for mee .

That is unless I scale the muckheap and then jump off it into the cornfield

Well the yard had made a decision to keep everything in and the school is frozen solid so am going to have to decide what to do over the weekend as he wil need to stretch his legs.

We have fields and paths on the farm we can ride on so hoping they will be doable

Riding in dry snow is a different matter to riding in wet slushy muck. It gives more traction and makes the going softer, I ride more often in winter and wouldn't go on our roads other than to cross them as they are often practically sheet ice. I don't ride when there is no snow, footing is treacherous then.

I was out this morning - Riding on cold sunny winter days is why I have a horse!!!

(but I can go around the farmers fields, wouldn't do it if I had to go on the roads)

I've gone out round the fields before now when the snow is fresh and soft - once it's starts to ice I wouldn't risk it. Plus wouldn't ride anywhere I didn't know (ie other than fields) as you never know exactly what is going to be under foot!!

Every time we have any. I have a good gallop up the middle of the lanes we live on - great fun!

Does your wooden spoon have festive ribbons on it?

I'm a bit worried as my TB will start to go nuts without enough exercise. Unfortunately we're straight onto roads, which haven't been gritted, so hacking is out of the question.

When I kept my horses at my parents farm, we'd turn them out in snow and I use to hack around the fields. Oh how I long for the days when I kept them on my own yard...
