My 19 year old gelding has a pollen allergy and has suffered from it for the last six summers. When it started in 2006 we went through the routine of scoping and traceal washes (he had three) and established that it was a pollen allergy but not which pollen. Sometimes it starts April sometimes May.
The temerature plays a big part, when its very warm he's worse, I have found a full face mask helps and also a rug to reflect the sun.
We tried the inhalers which didn't work as the masks (tried two different ones) stressed him out and made him worse. Then it was the steriods, ventipulmin and sputilosin. The steriods lowererd his immune system and he contracted infections, it got so bad in 2009 I considered PTS. However he pulled round that autumn as he always does at that time of year, he is a normal horse in the winter (if there is such a thing). Vet meds again since then in the summer and closely monitored for infections.
This year I am putting my faith in herbs as I can no longer afford the £££ for vet visits and meds.
I started herbs last August to detox his system and to build up his immune system. he is on a blend for SPA COPD just now and he's great at the moment.
If anyone has any recommendations for anything else I'd be grateful for any info.
Keeping my fingers crossed the herbs keep on working as I dont' want to think about the alternative for him.
