Does anyone have horses with pollen allergies?

My 19 year old gelding has a pollen allergy and has suffered from it for the last six summers. When it started in 2006 we went through the routine of scoping and traceal washes (he had three) and established that it was a pollen allergy but not which pollen. Sometimes it starts April sometimes May.

The temerature plays a big part, when its very warm he's worse, I have found a full face mask helps and also a rug to reflect the sun.

We tried the inhalers which didn't work as the masks (tried two different ones) stressed him out and made him worse. Then it was the steriods, ventipulmin and sputilosin. The steriods lowererd his immune system and he contracted infections, it got so bad in 2009 I considered PTS. However he pulled round that autumn as he always does at that time of year, he is a normal horse in the winter (if there is such a thing). Vet meds again since then in the summer and closely monitored for infections.

This year I am putting my faith in herbs as I can no longer afford the £££ for vet visits and meds.

I started herbs last August to detox his system and to build up his immune system. he is on a blend for SPA COPD just now and he's great at the moment.

If anyone has any recommendations for anything else I'd be grateful for any info.

Keeping my fingers crossed the herbs keep on working as I dont' want to think about the alternative for him.

My previous mare was allergic to bluebells - as soon as they finished, so her sneezing and runny nose vanished!!

Out with my friend one day, later in the summer, we noticed that she sneezed violently every now and again. We figured it was the honeysuckle and again, as soon as it finished so her symptoms went.

Luckily both of them were allergic to the one and only specific flowers!

For the first time ever, we about 18 big rape fields within a 2 mile radius of our yard. The yellow peril is visible where ever you look....
As a result, our NF mare has had the dry cough. We are insured so have been through tests, and ventipulmin. Have tried an inahler but it stresses her out too much.
So, I decided to stop the ventipulmin and have been using NAF detox and Easy breathing, as will struggle to pay for ventipulmin long term once insurance wont cover it. It seemed to help, and the cough has gone since the wet weather started, but today being our first dry day in weeks, the cough is back, but at the minute, mildly and she isn;t hacking her guts up like she was initially.Have purchased fly hood with nose net, too see if that improves it.
Our old boy also started coughing at the same time, as did my neighbours horses. Again, all seemed to improve with the wetter weather we have had down south...
The rape is thankfully starting to go over here now, so I hope that will be an end to the problem and with luck the fields will get rotated and somewhere else will have the rape to contend with next year.
Any other success stories or help, appreciated. Box of frogs, will keep an eye on your treatment, if you get any updates, would love to hear them.
