as title really- i know sometimes old or very new injuries dont show on bone scans but anything else? my vet said the bone scan should show soft tissue injury/bone injury, ligament issues but nothing showed on my horses, and on further x rays so is there some types of injuries that dont show??

oh, thats very interesting as that is the area of concern..... do you why it doesnt show or was it just one of those things?? my vet never mentioned a pelvic injury not showing...

something to do with the amount of muscle over that area makes the bones too deep to detect with a portable x-ray machine. basically if the horse is hopping like a jack russel when you move him its very likely to be pelvis. hope it isnt for you!

yes he is almost skipping with his hind legs, BUT, this is only when ridden and only in trot, but nothing showed on bone scan or x ray... (this has been going on for months by the way, think we have run out of dianostics now) he is 100% sound when in hand

Soft tissue damage doesn't show on xray.... And I'm not convinced it would show on a bone scan either? :confused:
Which is why in humans we use MRI scanners.... obviously more difficult with a horse though :rolleyes:

Bone scans and xrays only show boney changes!

MRI shows soft tissue

And yes things can get missed! The procedure is only as good as the experts reading it!

see the speciailst vet said the bone scan should show ligament and soft tissue damage as its parting from the bone or similiar the bone ativiity increases around the soft tissue or ligament???? these are specilaists that i have been reffered to so i'm hoping they know there stuff, i'm fast running outof insurance money now so not sure i can go with an MRI

My horses Sacro-illiac problem didnt show up when she had her full body scan. Vet told me that its quite common for SI not to show. Funnily it did show she had a slight problem with her off hind navicular which hadn't and still hasnt been a problem!!

Xrays will show no muscular or ligament damage with the only exception being a possibility of a calcification showing up.
The xray will show only bone pathology however it is essential to rule this out to be sure it is muscular/soft tissue damage.
Bone scans much the same.
Having said that, you can change the density and contrast of an xray to show the soft tissue borders. In humans you can look for fluid levels too.
It can pick up SOME foreign bodies in the tissue layers.
xrays and bone scans= bones
mri= soft tissue (and bones)
ultrasound- soft tissue, tendons etc
This is probably worded crap!
