Does it annoy anyone else?

It's one of my main bugbears too - absolutely hate it! A hairnet or a plait is a must - terribly bad manners not to IMO!

Only ever really seen it SJ and showing - I think its crazy for showing when you see kids dressed up to the nines, every hair on the pony's body smoothed to perfection and then sticking out of the riders hat is this mass of tatty hair tied with a pretty ribbon - where's the sense in that???

1. Boiling 40 degree temperatures in the summer.

2. Freezing -40 degree temperatures in the winter.

3. Discomfort and the onset of migraines resulting from previous fractured skull.

4. Because I am an adult, have ridden for however many years and I choose to not wear one.

LOL!! @ fashion statement - well not here sorry - there is no-one but me around.

The fashion statement comment was really based on ALL the people i know that don't wear hats - yes every single one of them that i personally know.

My answers to your reasons:

1: New designs in hats have a new vent system allowing air to not just enter your hat but pass through it, allowing a cooling system in your hat

2: I may be dumb but how does a hat make your head colder? Surely it warms it up in the extreme cold? (please enlighten me im a blond trapped in a brunettes body)

3: Once again new designs in hats have lessened pressure on the skull that is common in hats. They have added spongey impressionable bits in the hat to absorb the stress and lessen the pressure on your skull, eliminating pressure and migraines associated with this pressure.

4: I know an adult friend of a friend who died falling from a 100% safe horse - she died from head injuries.

Surely after suffering a fractured skull you'd be extra careful with your head?

Just my opinion of course but theres not a price to put on your head - after all you're not gna get another one!
 
If there is a safety reason to tie up long heir, then do it. If it is just for "looking smart", then do what you like.

IMO it is MOST important to have hair tied and secured when out hunting, for obvious reasons!

Fos SJ, no reason at all, unless the course is ridden under low branches LOL - I just make myself smart out of respect.
 
1. Plus 40 degrees - not sure you can comprehend the heat of this to be honest. Hats keep head warm, as you've already pointed out; wearing a hat in those temperatures for anything longer than an hour or two at a time would cook your brain.

2. Yes a hat keeps your head warm - that's why I wear a full Trappers hat with fur inside and all down the "ears" and over my face. I'm guessing most of you just cannot possibly comprehend HOW cold -40 is. A silly little riding hat certainly would have me with severe frostbite on my ears and cheeks within a few minutes.

3. No thanks, I'd rather not.

4. Yes I've also known some "hatted" people die from riding accidents.

When your number comes up - it's time! Doesn't matter a whole lot what you do and there are plenty other way to minimise risks, which plenty of hatted people do not do.

I wore goretex jacket and body protector the last time I SJ'd.

Next time (assuming the rain ever stops) I am wearing my XC colours, plus left my XC goggles on top of my hat.

If I smoked, I would light 1 up as I went in the arena and have it in my mouth as I went around. To put it bluntly, I have no respect for the organisers!

I am considering wearing fancy dress (e.g. deely boppers and tutu) for the last comp of the year. It does not say in the rules that you cannot...
 
Speaking as someone who used to have waist length very thick hair it is impossible to keep it in a hair net. It is just so much easier to platt it.

Plaiting is ok as well as thats neat. It's people with bushy pony tails or untied hair all over the place i'm talking about.

Drjames - you appear to be the type of person i shout at at shows. If you have no respect for the organisers then you shouldn't be there because if it wasnt for them you wouldn't have ANYWHERE to compete.
 
I refuse to wear a hairnet under any circumstances, they are vile things!!

I don't compete, but wouldn't wear one for showing, etc, I don't see the point.
 
i dont mind people not wearing a hairnet bu i think if you can just tie long hair into a ponytail and then a bun it does look nicer:)
 
I show respect for the organisers by behaving responsibly around other competitors, being polite to collecting ring stewards, respecting their land and property. I fail to see how wearing a hair net shows respect
I've been to shows where people who are very smartly dressed, on well turned out horses have been damn rude to the organisers - I don't view this as respect.

If I were to compete then perhaps I would plait my hair, but under any other circumstances it is just thrown back in a ponytail or left down. I tie it up when I ride, what is the problem with it??
 
Doesn't bother me what you do.....at least you wear a hat....unlike me! I'm just a bare-naked-pony-tail-girl!

Nope, not that - just need to get on and ride in the rain! Wear a decent coat and gloves - what's the problem? I've had "we will ride in ALL weathers" drummed into me for 7 years now. Only ever had 1 lesson cancelled due to bad weather.

Regarding OP - I wear a hair net just for general stuff as I can guarantee you my hair would fall out of whatever hair tie I use LOL
