Does it annoy anyone else?

I show respect for the organisers by behaving responsibly around other competitors, being polite to collecting ring stewards, respecting their land and property. I fail to see how wearing a hair net shows respect
I've been to shows where people who are very smartly dressed, on well turned out horses have been damn rude to the organisers - I don't view this as respect.

Well said!

Dressing like a waiter/night club bouncer to compete does not define whether you are civilised or not. Your behaviour does.

I do know what you mean though, although I have bad hair I do make sure I'm presented to a reasonable standard.

I thought it was quite bad that one guy in the Derby went round in a water proof mac!

Sorry , a bit late to read all replies , but I was amused by the plastic mac man . I was wondering if he forgot to take it off before entering the ring or did his Mum insist he wore it ?
I can't say I've ever seen anyone in a plastic mac riding on TV before - oh well , each to his own

When daughter started to ride she wore anything - usually trackies or jeans and trainers. Then she started to help exercise a lady's horses and she insisted that she wore riding boots, jods and a hairnet everytime she rode. Saying that she wasn't getting on any of her horses unless she was properly dresssed. I think it has improved her attitude to her riding now that she is properly dressed and comfortable.

Firstly i mean for competing, not for every day!!
Secondly, yes you're behaviour shows respect but surely if you can't even be bothered to present yourself appropriately (hair net or plait) then that suggests things about you. After all how much effort does it take to make yourself look presentable, say thank you, smile, do this do that.
Manners are quickly becoming a thing of the past i think.

When i was younger at Pony club the DC at the time had a go at everyone bout not wearing hairnets and she told us about someone she knew who hadn't worn a hairnet and had fallen off and gotten scalped! (dont kniw if she was saying that to scare us as we were only little!!)
From then on i always wore a hairnet, however i now only do when im going somewhere. I do think it looks untidy just having a ponytail when competing. Do what you want with your hair when at home but i think a plait or hairnet for competing looks better, so yes it does annoy me too!!

When I compete my waist length hair is plaited, then put in a bun and netted - you would not know I had long hair. I do my utmost to be correctly turned out and the same for my horse and tack.

At home, I do ride with the boys legs covered in mud, shaving in tail and my hair in a pony tail or even just tucked behind my ears and hat shoved on. They have a rough flick over when I ride but the tack area is always very clean to avoid rubbing.

Tack is cleaned for shows but rarely inbetween though bits are always rinsed after use. Tack is fairly clean as I do shows normally every couple of weeks.

I don't have time to have my horse looking like it is going to a show every time I ride, and they live out a lot so are normally fairly dirty if it is muddy.

I do wear jods though at all time apart from the odd occasion riding western when I will ride in jeans.

"Well you see; I actually think that you all need to learn to ride with umbrellas!!"

Oh dear... My sister and her friends are planning a 'dressage to music', riding to the Mary Poppins song, and last time I saw them practising they all had umbrellas (but then my sister's horse spooked at it and she dropped it)

I've never owned a hairnet in my life, and only ever do fun shows, but when I ride I tend to have my hair tightly plaited to keep it out of the way. Otherwise it just looks scruffy.

WITH REGARDS TO WEARING WATERPROOF MAC IN DERBY

I think you have to be a bit leanent with regards to a mac being worn in the derby, or speed derby. At least they are clear and not sponsored coloured bomber jackets. After riding up there all week you have to appreciate that altough riders do their best to look smart, there was serious rain and after spending all week in it, you just want a bit of dryness. Also remember that for most of the riders it is not like they are just riding that 1 round on 1 horse, they are also running round frantically trying to jump other horses in the 4 other outside rings!!
