Does this forum make you paranoid?

Don't get me wrong, this forum is brilliant and there is so much advice and information on here it's incredible. The support that is offered in times of trouble could not be got from anywhere else, it's invaluable.

However, I can't help but feel it has made me a paranoid owner, probably from knowing too much. I can't work out whether this is a good thing or a bad thing!

I am a natural worrier anyway so that probably doesn't help!

Anyone else feel like this?
 
Yep, paranoid and lacking in confidence due to the amount of threads I see that rip apart someones riding that isn't really 'that' bad!

No. not really. I'm not sure I could ever know too much and if I thought I did then I should probably give up.
 
No but that is probably only because I have owned horses for over 45 years.

If I was newish to owning it would terrify me. So much to go wrong.

What a lot of people forget is that many people only post when things have gone badly wrong and they need help. The rest of the time they lurk :D

I dont think awareness is ever a bad thing. I guess the vets get a lot of phone calls they wouldn't otherwise though :eek:

Fair enough. On here, grow a crocodile skin and inbetween the insults you will find some really good advice. I am as guilty as the next person for being sharp, use the pm facility if you see someone replying that you think may help you more than the rest of us dragons.

Don't take anything personally,we are mostly overworked hormonal b1tches. We can be sharp because we don't have time to pussy foot, not because we don't like you!
 
Its not paranoia, horses get loads wrong with them. If you didn't already know that, consider the forum to be giving you a heads up. You can thank us later. ;)
 
I found that coming on this forum did the same thing for my stable management as having lessons with my current instructor did for my riding.

I feel like 'proper' management and riding is addictive and neverending! Like making the change from passenger to rider making the switch from just doing a horse to looking after them requires a huge amount of knowledge, forethought and time. This forum has opened my eyes to different things I probably wouldn't have known about until it was too late, ulcers and kissing spine being just two examples. So thank you from me, my loan horse and the horse I am looking to buy :) x

Im more of a 'lurker' and quite new to horse ownership (should I run and hide now? :D ) but it dosent make me paranoid, just aware of how many ways of doing things there are. :D
 
it's made me realise that there are others out there that are happy to just plod around on a pony.. and also those who want to compete and be the best they can be... and then theres the people who try to make things as fun as they can be :p
 
Somtimes it makes me smile, sometimes frown. Often just shake my head in wonder. Just occasionally it makes me want to rip someones head off but paranoid? Nope.
Much like being on a livery yard really. ;)

HHO certainly gives me food for thought, i have had my opinions on things changed and learnt things that you will never find in any book but i don't think i've turned into a paranoid owner:)
My horses on the other hand may be paranoid that i am not going to buy them new shoes, make them work properly from behind and not let them be fat field ornaments ever again;):eek:
 
Once or twice I've wondered at posts that read like the gospel but that give advice that sounds a bit dubious to me. But all the others I've found interesting, generally really helpful and some downright funny, in the right way!

And I got my new polio off here so i think it's brill :)

I would think twice before I asked for cc but thats cos i have such a low opinion of my riding already! or posted something critical of someone else as I've seen a few flames on here, but that's not really may way.
 
It doesn't make me paranoid as such, but it terrifies me! I had NO idea horses could have so much wrong with them! That's a good thing, though. The more you know, the better!
 
Yes! Was only thinking this the other day and going to do a post about it myself! I'm a born worrier and reading all about the sick and sorry horses on this forum make me extremely paranoid! Everytime the slighest thing happens I'm thinking oh god, could it be X, Y & Z!
 
I absolutely love this forum. I consider myself to be a very knowledgable horsewoman, but I have learnt loads of new things on here. People are so helpful and supportive. You soon learn which ones to ignore and which ones have a wealth of information and knowledge, to be tapped into whenever the need arises. And when the boot is on the other foot, it is really great when you make a difference to someone else and their horse, for the better.
 
It has made me question the way I do things and my horse's health, but that is definitely a good thing. If it weren't for this forum I wouldn't have pushed my vet to scope for ulcers despite the vet and my instructor saying there was nothing wrong, and I am so glad I did as it had made a huge difference to him now he has been diagnosed and treated. Thank you HHO :)

What were his symptoms? I have had a horse here with them, but had different symptoms to my gelding who I am now suspecting may have them.

Nah, like many on here, I have been around horses for many many years. I have learned loads of stuff though, and thinking has changed since my teenage days. It's changing all the time, some good, some bad ;)
I think most of us are trying to do our best for our horses. Certainly none of us are perfect!
And this forum is by far more (sometimes unintentionally) entertaining than any other :D
 
It has done.

In a world before internet, you trusted your vet/farrier etc. Nowerdays the simple invention of the internet means you are suddenly more aware of other schools of thought/opinions/bad experiences.

Sometimes, that will be of great help - other times, it will be a hinderance. Not a lot in the horse world is fact, but mere opinions and opinions can be wrong. Being exposed to wrong opinions can have as much of a detremental effect on your horse-keeping as being exposed to the right ones can help.

I don't think in all cases knowledge is power.
 
Sometimes, but i think it's good if you are not sure what to do etc to get lots of different views and then I can make my mind up easier than just taking vets/farrier/one persons advice and following that blindly. I don't mind people telling me things bluntly so long as they explain their reasons why they think that :) I get more paranoid when there's a post about laminitis, even though I cant do anything more to make the risk to my mare any lower it reminds me sometimes they can get it no matter how hard you try!
 
Sorry, can't quote on phone, but in answer to Wagtail, not a lot! He wasn't holding weight particularly well, but not majorly underweight. The main things that made me suspect it was that he was very stressed and not keen on his girth being done our being groomed on his body. Sounds odd that I concluded ulcers, but after stuff I read on here I just had a hunch

This is exactly what I mean! Although like others have said, it can only be a good thing to be aware of what can happen and what to watch out for. We all have our horses best interests at heart.

:D Exactly.

This forum hasn't made me paranoid. But owning Nitty really has! Once upon a time I used to leave little cuts. Not anymore. Once upon a time if a horse was lame for a couple of days I would just rest them and get back on and off I'd go. Not anymore.

There is nothing like owning a walking disaster of a horse to make you realise just how badly they can go wrong and how frequently!

I love coming on here just to moan about how blimming poxy my horse is. Makes me feel better to know I'm not alone! :D
