Does this sound like a tendon or tendon sheath injury?

Horse came in this morning after hooning round, and tonight he has significant soft tissue swelling on RF from fetlock to mid way up lower leg, in front of the tendon - where a windgall would be. Most noticeable on the outside. Was expecting serious lameness but he's barely lame (seems not quite right but not really noticeably lame). Noticeably hotter than the other.

Could this be a tendon sheath injury? Seems too much swelling to be a tendon injury with so little lameness but

If there is no puncture wound, I would cold hose and ice pack as often as possible and keep in for a few days. If the swelling doesnt go down your vet will need to scan to find out what is going on in there.

Hope its nothing serious. Do let us know how you get on.

Sounds like a tendon sheath injury to me. I would ice cup it as an immediate, and box rest and call the vet. This is not really serious but it does need to be seen by the vet. My horse was off work for a while with his which we first thought were his normal wingalls and as he was in temporary stabling at an 3 day event for four days I presumed it was due to the restriction on turnout and they had come up (as they do more) because of this. It wasn't till we got him home after the last day that we realised it was more serious. Unfortunately my physio friend didn't know about ice cups then or I'm sure we could have got a prompter recovery.

Does sound like a tendon sheath injury. Probably best to the get vet out, I've had one that was missed at first (when I told the vet about the swelling she HAD but wasn't there when vet saw her, it was dismissed as a red herring), they can be tricky to sort out as they can flare up again very easily - my mare's has been flaring up for almost a year now but sadly it makes her about 2/10ths lame

Hmm not sure what to do. Swelling virtually gone this morning (ie woudn't notice anything if weren't looking at it with a microscope!) and sound. And I did leave him out last night as he was sound and I really wanted to see what it looked like this morning without a change to routine. Thing is he has an event tomorrow - I am usually overcautious and get annoyed with myself for w/d all the time but equally if there is still a chance he has rattled something i should pobably be cautious.

Is it possible to have a tendon sheath issue without lameness?

Yes it is, my girl had intermittant (sp!) lameness for a good 2 months before it finally got to the point where she was lame all the time in trot on a circle. She was however (and still is) only lame in trot on a circle, with the affected hind on the inside. When she went in for the first (!!) lameness workup they said they had been hammering her up and down to try and make her go lame and they couldnt!!

could be just a knock
make usre ifs not got any little wounds.
it could be sheath or tendon.
horses can be quite sound on bad tears to the tendon with plenty of swelling.
i would keep in, cold hose and wrap.
assess him tomorrow.
