Does your horse have a home for life?

I'm well aware that people own horses for various reasons; some are for pleasure, some are for competition, some for business, some a mixture of all three. Now I know that I for one will NEVER part with my horse; we've been together nearly a decade now, and have pretty much grown up together. at pony club, when we were about 12, we all said that we'd never sell our ponies/horses, that we'd keep them forever...yet a decade on, i am the only person who still has the same horse. it seems a sentimental thing to say 'my horse has a home for life', but in my case, it is true. other than through death, or by terminating a loan contract, I have never actually had to pass a horse on, so i guess im lucky in this respect. i was just wondering how many people intend to keep their current horse(s) to the end of their days?

I would love to be able to keep mine for life and hopefully that will happen but I have to say that if my circumstances changed to such that I could no longer afford to keep them then I would rather sell them on to a good home than risk not being able to keep them in the way that I like them to be kept.I sold on my last horse a few months back after a really difficult decision and as he has gone to relatives I can honestly say he has a fantastic home where he will remain for the rest of his life.

About three quarters of my horses are destined to be seller-ons; the other quarter have a home for life and will never leave my ownership.

I intend to keep my horse for the rest of his life*

* lifespan entirely dependent on how many more times he attempts to dump me in the road in front of a bus/spin round for no apparent reason/buck at inopportune moments when I am trying very hard to look nonchalant, cool and in control.

oh i do!! We have three and we will make sure that they will stay with us till the end. We've only ever sold one, my first pony, but he was getting bored. It broke my heart, i cried so much and the sight of a picture of him etc would set me off, i knew he was well and happy but i missed him so much! Needless to say, 3 years on we bought him back when they put him up for sale and he shall now be with us for good!
The other two are the same really, can't part atall! The old boy has been with us for most of his life, amazing little man!and even now he has many health problems and getting on a bit, i wouldn't exchange him for the world!

Sadly, yes(only kiddin, love her to little mint balls!). Baby pony has caused the biggest whole in my purse, she's always doing something! Other one thankfully is never feeling sorry for herself. I'd never sell either of them, although if needs must I'd seriously consider loaning(although I don't want to think about that one please and thank you!)

No, my mare and foal are both for sale whether they go sooner or later. To be perfectly honest, there's no way I will be able to keep the foal more than about 4 years as I will be retired by then and with the piffling amount of money I will have to exist on, there's no way I'll be able to afford horses. She's bred to be a competition horse anyway and in the highly unlikely event I ever sit on a horse again, she won't be what I would want to ride. I want her to go to a competition home where, hopefully, someone can have some fun on her.

Yes,
My 2 are 1/2 sister and have spent the entire life together so they have a home for life!!But I can keep them at home for free.
Plus they are home bred,I have bought and sold others and felt that special bond but not for these 2 they are staying put.

There's a vast difference between having the intention to keep your horse for life, and actually being able to do so.
Horses, as we all know, are expensive animals to maintain, and we never know what's around the corner. I have known a few people who have had to sell horses they intended to keep for life, due to divorce, children, a change in financial circumstances.

I don't think anybody can say that they will DEFINITELY keep their horse for life, but thankfully, most people who wish to, can and do.

My intention is to keep all mine for their entire lives. If circumstances dramatically changed I would consider PTS rather than selling on...

we had to do this when we lost our house...both our oldies (34 and 29) were PTS. we couldnt face having to put them through a move, a change of yard, change of routine, etc. it was tough, but we dont regret it; they went healthy and happy.

Nope, sadly, barr one.
My horses do a job and I cannot afford field ornaments.

That said, I have one mare I can't part with (or at least not unless she was going to a home for life - which no-one can guarantee) - she's a bit of a nutter and could easily fall on hard times if I sold her on. Plus she helped me emotionally when my parents died.

the 2 horses i have now are the only two we have ever bought - the rest were loans, my two have a home for the rest of their days. i have had my mare 7 years now and we grew up together i was 13 and she was 5 wen i got her. i have had my gelding for 3 years now and feel i have made his life a much happier one than before. would never sell them unless extreme circumstances arose but even then, would go down every other avenue first . they are my babies!!

W definitely will never, ever leave me. I chose Cat very carefully with the intention of him lasting me well into his old age I tried at least 14 horses before settling on him. So long as he doesn't get too big and strong for me he won't be going anywhere either, just hope he doesn't grow, 15.2-3 is plenty big enough!

My horse will be with me for life. Even if circumstances changed and I couldnt afford to keep her, I would take on an extra job/do overtime so she wouldnt have to be sold. She will be 17 next year, so I would really worry what would happen to her if she was sold.

I will definately keep mine for life. When I say 'life', I mean that I would not sell them on. My last two horses (over a period of 10 years) were put to sleep following injuries. I gave them the very best chance of recovery (in terms of time, effort and money), but both ultimately broke down again so I decided to have them put to sleep. Neither would have been able to live in a field, and I would not want field ornaments. Having kept them in the lap of luxury as comp horses all their lives, I don't think they would have been happy.

When my current horse is no longer able to enjoy his life, I would have him PTS - I could not bear to sell my horse. This may sound selfish, but I just couldn't bear the thought of someone pushing them beyond what they had been sold on for (ie a quieter life) or selling them on (and them being passed around). I suppose loan is an option, but some many things can still go wrong.

My boy, who I've had for ten years, has a home for life no matter what.

The brood mare will never change ownership, but she may go as a companion when her foal is born. If not, she may be PTS as she became lame when in foal, and I couldn't bear to see her in pain like she was last winter. She also has sweetitch to a terrible extent as times, and is nappy to ride, not her fault, we recently discovered that she had been driven as the wheel horse in a tandem, and hunted by a novice. She has told us in no uncertain terms that she will only follow the horse in front...

Her foal is a keeper, at least that is why we bred her, it remains to be seen (get back to you in 3 or 4 years) whether in my mid 40's I want to break in and ride away a youngster, I am not a brave rider at the best of times. I am hoping that she has her mothers calm and laid back character, if not, maybe loan/lease to someone we know.

I have had my horse for 17 years....and he isnt going anywhere....he is a complete nut case...and would have ended up dead if I never kept him.....I would never part with him.
My mams horse is also staying....he has been out on loan for a few years and he is now retired....2 grumpy old men...lol

I would love more then anything to give my boy a home for life, unfortunately I know I'm not going to be financially stable enough to do that, I'll be off to uni next year and won't be able to afford to keep him. I couldnt expect anyone else to pay for him, I have to think practically. Sadly.
