Today my boss (Hi Jen!) had her working dog (BC) attacked by a fox while at home. Dog was in the garden (he lives outside) and a fox joined him! Fox came over to the dog and then started trying to attack him. Poor Bob (the dog) couldn't get away and tried to hide in his kennel but the fox carried on. Luckily my boss lives on a farm so called her father in law who jumped over a wall with a 12 ball (?) gun and shot mr foxy dead. They couldn't scare the fox away just by yelling at him and they didn't want to risk getting bitten as she has young girls. This was at 8 this morning!

Sad for mr fox but at least it was quick but luckily Bob is okay and seems to be not affected at all.

Just made me wonder how your dogs are with foxes? Scoobs and I regularly meet foxes where we walk and he always want to try and go after them but I don't know what I would do if a fox came over and started attacking him. I don't generally carry a gun around with me! I'm hoping this situation is very rare but the foxes are getting braver!

Not very good, or very good depending on your opinion! Never met any out of walks but she has a tally of 3 young ones, and 1 adult. :o
However she doesn't pick her fights well and has a missing ear tip and a hole in her chin from a run in with one that was beefier than her!

I really don't like them, we had one take on all 3 terriers that were out in the yard, brave fox! But it wouldn't give in and one of the dogs was taking a fair battering and they had to be rescued by my granda!

Horrible things.

Has the dog been to the vet? Foxes carry all sorts of nasties, but glad OK.

My fella has tried to go after them in the past but he's been on lead.

I know a guy with Deerhounds, his dog was cut pretty bad after having a tussle in the front garden a few days before Crufts, oops, at least he could prove the dog was fit for purpose :p

12 bore :p

Not been to the vet yet as there are no wounds that have broken the skin (had a good look) but will be kept an eye on and will probably go for a check up.

Scoobs hasn't realised that fox chasing is not the best idea. They can get through gaps he can't! Made the mistake of once having him off lead when a fox appeared...never again!

And thats it 12 bore! I knew it was something like that! Apparently a poor guy nearly fell of his bike when he heard the gun shot! Fully expecting to hear on the news tonight "and finally gunshots where heard in Mountsorrel." tonight!

a fox attacked my YO's German Shepherd the other week and she has had to have lots of drugs to get rid of the infections caused.

the fox has also been attacking horses working in the arenas!

Daisy Doberman has killed a few young foxes but as Boris is only interested in retrieving and not killing he doesn't get involved :)

My friends dog regualry chases foxes and one day actually cornered one and just sat there and cried silly girl, she had no idea what to do with mr foxy dunno who looked more scared dog or fox lol.

Surely a fox attacking dogs and horses is a fox thats a danger. Maybe a very hungry fox?

Blimmin foxes! My little terrier (now gone to the big chase in the sky) chased the fox out of here once; the s0dding thing came in to have a go at the poulty, so little'un basically hiked after him across the ten acre field and told him he wasn't welcome! We went out to call back said terrier, and hidden behind a tuft of grass we saw a patch of feathers; oh no we thought, this is the first of the chicken carcases he's taken away.

But it wasn't! It was our cockerell, alive but shocked. So we picked him up, dusted him down and put him back with his hareem, and kept a watching eye, and after about half an hour he perked up - and the next morning was back doing his duty!!! And lived for a good many years after that until he went to the big chicken house in the sky - I found him in the chicken-house one morning dead as a dodo, had obviously just fallen off the perch and that was it.

So our little terrier was a bravehearted little chap; the one we've got now (another Lakeland X) would do the same for sure.

Never had a problem with them tbh they tend to steer clear of people and dogs round here.

You may want to go to vets anyway as foxes carry mange which is a bugger has it spreads to people, other dogs and animals. My dog got it from rolling in fox poo he didn't even make contact with the fox!

Gosh, yes hadn't thought of mange! Lovely!

Bob seems okay at the mo which is good. Thanks for your replies everyone, interesting to see that we're not the only one with the problems. Can't believe they are attacking horses :\.

I don't know if i would ever Trust Scoobs to kill one outright, or even catch one! He'd be another that goes "HELP!"

Will be keeping an eye out. Have a family of foxes on my street and they are getting braver. Sit outside my front door fighting, drives everyone nuts but they don't run away when you shout at them or throw things at them!

Bloody animals, lovely to look at but a pain all the same!

Dear lord, I never would have thought a fox would punch over it's weight other then to defend:eek:
I was speaking to a lady the other day as she was saying she has stopped walking her akita in a certain field as the akita has killed 3 foxes, literally ripped them to pieces before her eyes, I have to say most of mine would kill a fox if it attacked, the bull lurcher I have has killed a fox in the home before she came to me, and has attempted to kill a one whilst with me.
Oh also used to own a pretty mahussivly built grey hound x and it kiled alot of foxes, maybe the foxes here are smarter and know not to mess, or the dogs are harder:D still I bet it was scarey as hell, I feel sorry for the poor collie bless him, I think there would be a killing frenzy if a fox got in my garden cos my akita is usually running around or hiding in some deep hole she has dug under the trees in order to stay cool awaiting her next meal:D

Poor Bob, hope he's over his ordeal now.

Both of mine chase numerous foxes over the farmland where I keep the horse. Hectors tally is almost double figures now but Pads doesn't join in, just shouts at them.

As beautiful as they are, and I do love to see them on my walks, they are a pain in the arse and the farmer is only to happy for the dogs to get rid of them. Didn't consider the mange aspect though I must admit!

Where I used to work there was a JRT and a lurcher. The fox from the south of their land (their drive through the middle was the territory line) was a dog fox who would come right up to the house, torment the chickens and the dogs often chased him back to his bit of wood. Heckles up hooling out of the front door .
The one from the North side with the stables also a dog fox was very differant would come out and watch you poo pick and ride, the dogs never bothered with it.
Maybe the one from the south was a scoundrel even in the canine world!;)

Do you know I never even imagined a fox would try take on a dog, unless it was cornered or maybe defending it's young. I do like to see foxes and I am not a hunt supporter as such (although I see its place) but I do think too many well-meaning people cause many problems by encouraging foxes on there land and in their gardens by feeding them. They then do not fear humans do they and then they cause problems for others (the ones not feeding them!). Foxes should be scared of people (and dogs) end of.

Think they should do more on these autum watch programmes etc ad educate people against encouraging foxes into their gardens.

We have a family of foxes that live in the woods near out fields. If they see us, or the dogs they are off! that's how it should be.

Well I'm really amazed at the stories of foxes being so aggressive, back where I used to live which was very built up we had urban foxes roaming around in daylight scavenging and being an all round pest but never heard of any attacks, now I'm in the country surrounded by farmland I haven't seen one fox in six years I've been here.
