Hi all,

I've had the misfortune to come across a KC registered breeder who's dogs are kept in awful conditions. Dogs are setters and kept in dog cages (the middle sized ones, not the largest) with no bedding, just the floor and....no water. They are let out for literally 10 mins to pee/poo and drink then straight back into their cages 4 times day between 7am and 10pm. One dog poos and pees in his cage so has to sit/lie in it for hours til he's sorted. Place stinks, dogs are spinning around in their cages (cant fully stand up or stretch due to size of dog v cage) and quite obviously literally going out of their minds.

This person is a KC registered breeder and judge!

Cant tell you how upsetting I've found this. Spoke to RSPCA about it, first person said "oh they're the worst, long as they are fed and watered that's it". Rang again and second person was more helpful, said they would pay a visit.

How this person can keep these dogs like this is totally beyond me. How people can put so much emphasis on a KC registered dog is also beyond me. I know there are good KC breeders out there, but this person...words fail!!

contact the council, if need be tell them you can smell over bearing urine/faeces, check and see if they have a licence too. As a matter of health and safety the council will pay a visit. They often visit my mams rescue to inspect so see no reson why they cannot inspect these premises, my mams rescue is private so there is no reason licence wise to visit but they still do and she invites them to do so.
Also contact the inland revenue and tell them they are making possibly alot a money and possibly not paying tax! Im sorry but if they are treating dogs like this and are irrisponsible and money greedy then you need to do more than contact the RSPCA but indeed call them again and tell them you intend to do your own investigations and will let it be know that they where contacted first and did bot all;)

Unfortunately certainly not unique amongst KC breeders/judges. As Cayla says report to the council, if they have several dogs they should have a breeders licence and people are supposed to conform to certain standards to gain one, the local dog warden might be of help too. Also as suggested contact the Kennel Club and any breed clubs, if they get enough complaints they might act. Did you comment on the conditions to the breeder, as obviously they don't have a problem with them if they were happy to let you see the dogs in that state.
As you have found, just because dogs are KC registered is no guarantee, anyone can register a litter, it is the additional health checks etc that are the main thing.

A user on here bought an epileptic, dysplastic puppy from an 'Accredited' breeder and was told if she didn't buy it, it would be put down anyway.

Accredited means health tested, yes? Saying that, hip scoring can come back as horrific, but that doesn't stop the breeder declaring he has health tested. There really ought to be a limit.

I wish the KC would carry out inspection visits and enforce low hip scoring for 'accredited' breeding. :( So bloody depressing. Sounds more like puppy farming than a KC breeder what a disgrace.

I think some of the RSPCA switchboard staff need some serious training! It is no longer acceptable under law to provide just food and water, although you say they also had no water, and this sounds appalling. Whatever goes on in peoples minds. Did you leave a number for them to get back to you with the outcome?

I bought my gorgeous dog (who I wouldnt change for the world but it makes me SO angry) from a registered, fully signed up, all boxes ticked kennel club breeder. We were first time buyers and didnt know any better!!

What they didnt tell me was the irresponsible, unplanned pregnancy (dad jumped mum on xmas day, along came puppies...), that only dad was hip scored and health checked...

We ended up with a pup who now has had BOTH her hips done, and countless other problems (skin, ears, etc...). Now I wouldnt change Chloe for the world, but it makes me sick to think people trust this scheme!!

I would get in touch with everyone and anyone...

Thanks everyone for your replies. Bit of an update, have rung RSPCA again today and had a long chat, they have passed it all onto one of their officers and said they would get the officer to contact me and discuss further. When I went today, I took some video of the dogs too. Will ring the council too on Monday and see what they have to say about things.

So disgusted by this, if this is an example of a KC breeder / accredited judge and winner at high level shows and all that I dread to think how many other poor dogs/cats are kept like this too. Puppy farms disgusting and wrong but probably about what you would expect.

Make a copy of your video for safe keeping. I would also now you have a hopefully positive reaction from the RSPCA inform the KC of this, otherwise this person will stay on their ABS list. The KC will never know otherwise. Also inform the breed club, though don't be surprised if the breed club does nothing at all or even show concern as the said breeder could well be a committee member. The breed club will probably have a website and list their committee anyway.

I had an argument with someone from the KC at the ABS stand at Crufts a couple of years ago regarding the fact that as long as someone hip scored it didn't matter if their dog had a score of 100 they could technicall still breed from it. Got some daft answer about not wanting to alienate those breeders who were trying to improve things. Re this setter breed, its definitely worth contacting the breed clubs, hopefully they might remove them from their judging lists.
Might also be worth writing to the two weekly dog papers Dog World and Our Dogs, obviously not naming names but they might just take it a bit further.

Terrible really. All the info I read before we bought our puppy was to buy from a kc registered breeder. We didn't because we found a litter through contacts where the mums and puppies were kept in fantastic conditions and our pup is gentle, very well adjusted and the breeder was honest, caring, knowledgeable and very obviously cared about her dogs and where the pups went. She wasnt however registered nor were her dogs. She bred only two litters a year in total even though she had a number of bitches and took deposits on the pups way before they were weaned. It was ber way of paying for her horses winter hay supplies. Is this bad? I certainly felt guilty at the time but I have since read more and more about bad registered breeders that i certainly wouldnt hesitate to go to unreg breeder as long I was as sure about that breeder.

Just to clarify, unless they are Assured (accredited) Breeders, breeders are not kc registered as such, it is just they have kc registered stock. I am not quite sure why someone would regularly breed from dogs that weren't kc registered as surely if you are breeding to improve your stock then it defeats the object if they are not registered. However it is good the breeder of your pups produces healthy well reared pups, it sits slightly uncomfortably with me that she is breeding purely for money, but she certainly isn't the only one and at least she is honest and admits it.
