Hi, poking my nose in here as a refugee from the Horse section!

Briefly we have an 18 month old JRT, excpet the chances are that he is only half JRT, saw the bitch def a JRT. Father may be a Working Cocker, or given the way he scavenges and eats could be almost anything. Certainly we have never had a JRT that eats like this one, or that has stealthily gained weight either. He is not short of exercise, having land at home with stables, etc etc and he goes out every day for a walk to a new place. But he resembles the one who ate all the pies.
He has had Skinners field and trial, which he likes but evidently isn't working as hard as he needs to for that to be what he stays on when bag ends in about 3 weeks. I have a measured beaker with daily amount in it and he never exceeds it, but he does have a few table scraps for want of a better word but not a lot.
These are now stopped in favour of raw carrot.
I seem to find the Light foods are mostly for seniors, he isn't a senior by any stretch. If possible cereal free is my preference, he has no tummy issues on the Skinners and don't wish to change feed and gain them either.
Any suggestions very welcome! Thank you

3 weeks??? A 15kg bag of Field and Trial lasts me at least 6! Are you feeding by the recommendation on the bag by any chance? If so, I'd cut right back. Henry gets 1/2 a scoop, twice a day, which I have just weighed - it adds up to about 200g in all.

Henry was a right porker when I got him, so it can be done:) He had Arden Grange light, which didn't suit him, then Iams light, which didn't suit him, then he went onto the F&T and has not looked back. If that food suits your dog's digestion, I'd stick with it and cut the amount you feed down.:)

Noo, he has 3 weeks left of the bag that we started weeks ago! I think he is having 150 or 175g a day, which is the level they suggest for his weight, his ideal weight I think rather than his porky weight.

I can easily cut him back on that but will need to bulk his diet out with something good for him, such as the carrot.

My OH's JRT is a bit of a porker - well she tries to be at any rate ;) and I've found she does well on CSJ fit n fast which seems to give her enough energy to run around with out piling on the pounds (before this she was on a light food that just seemed to sap her energy so she sat around all day staring at my OH adoringly which was great for his ego but not for her waistline)

CSJ also do a light food that isn't a senior one if that is the way you are wanting to go.

I think the feeding guide on Skinners F & T is rather on the generous side. I know I feed my 2 GSDs far less than the recommended amount, couldn't say exactly how much they have as I tend to feed by eye but roughly a large coffee mug each in the evening, and literally a handful in the morning. The younger of the 2 has raw 2 or 3 days a week and F & T the rest, they are both nice and slim.

A friend sent me this - how I wish it were a true story!

Banned from Sainsbury's - didn't like shopping there anyway!

Yesterday I was at my local Sainsbury's buying a large bag of Winalot dog food for my loyal pet and was in the checkout queue when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

What did she think I had - an elephant? So, since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, and that I was starting the Winalot Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t, because I ended up in hospital last time, but I'd lost 2 stone before I woke up in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with Winalot nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in queue was now enthralled with my story.)
Horrified, she asked me if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off the kerb to sniff a pretty Irish setter’s back-end and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard.

I'm now banned from Sainsbury's.

Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to think of daft things to say.

Oh I see:D

Why do you need to bulk it out? Genuine question! Like people, she'll feel peckish to begin with, but she'll soon adjust to smaller meals, just like we do when we go on diets.

I'm just a meanie mum:o:p:D

I'm another who feeds far less than the recommended amount (JWB not Skinners), If I fed her what they suggested she would be a right porker!! She doesnt get anything else to bulk her meals up. Every other night she gets less kibble and some tuna or something similar.

Susie gets only about 120g per day, her breakfast is just a sprinkling with the main bit in the evening and she only has 2 meals because she lives with two skinny dogs and it makes my life easier if she at least thinks she is getting a meal with them!

The amounts on the bags are guesses at best. Of course they want you to feed more so you buy more.

Keep him on the food cut it down and add boiled green beans if you need to add bulk.

The weight loss foods are awful full of carbs crap.

Totally agree, weight loss in dogs should not be done the same way as Humans, by eating more grain and less meat!!!

The minute you take fat and protein out of dry feed you have to bulk it up with carbs which dogs don't need and then make it taste of something by adding flavouring. So my question would be what exactly am I paying for?? Since more high carb feeds have been introduced more dogs are becoming diabetic.

If mine get porky it's more bone less meat, they aren't hungry as the bone fills them up a bit more exercise and off comes the fat reserves!

Many thanks for the replies, and if I can stick with the Skinners at reduced rates then that is what I shall try, gradually reducing the amount until we get some results.
