Dog harness for large boisterous dog ...

... which is also easy to put on as I can't bend down far enough to pick up the dogs and get a strap between the legs. So it needs to be the type that goes across the chest and around the belly.

I currently have an 'easy walker' which came from America but can't find anyone who supplies it in this country.

If it is also effective at stopping the dog pulling that would be a plus! (PS dog does go to training every week, wins all the prizes but is still boisterous out!!)
 
I had success using a halti on a particularly bolshy bitch. I find the dog harnesses a faff & not particulary affective, especially on a very determined & strong dog! I also used a normal collar & lead with the halti & found that gave me even more control. :)
 
id try a halti, or gentle leader rather than a harness, wen a dogs in a harness it can use all its weight to its advantage!!!!!!
 
If you are not comfortable with putting him in a good half check collar or he has issues which prevent that, then a headcollar as suggested.

I have a big, boisterous dog and got an alleged 'anti-pull' harness, and guess who ended up with a bad back on that occasion - me!!!
 
You need a half check or a halti :)
If you want to stop pulling, under no circumstances get a harness for any dog larger than a Cocker Spaniel (And even that's pushing it!)

Worlds Strongest Man - what do they put on him to pull a truck? A harness! Gives them the exact tools they need to put all that weight and power into it and it will make pulling worse.

If you don't like the idea of a half check (or even a choke chain) (very effective), try a Halti or a Gentle Leader - a bit of a pain to get used to for the dog at first, but they do get used to it :)

defo agree with the halti. Worked wonders for my dog who was very pully on walks, takes a couple days for them to get uses to it but after that its great. With a harness i find they can really put there body into the pulling and use the whole body to pull aganst you if that makes sense!!

But don't get the halti, put it on and expect them to just "get use to it"
Because thats just not fair. You need to have sessions with it.

Show them it.

Sniff it = treat
touch it = treat
let me touch you with it= treat
let me put the neck strap on =treat
let me put it over your nose and take it right off =treat

I do this for about a week before i even attempt to walk the on it.
 
Agreed sorry I didn't make that clear - both ours wore theirs in the house first of all. First of all put it on, take it off, treat and praise.
Then build it up to them wearing it for five minutes, take it off treat and praise.
Then we allowed them to wear them in the front garden while they were bustling around (we have real grass in the front for them to eat so they occasionally go out to have a munch :))
Then we walked on them and they are perfectly fine with them now :)

I use a Lupi for my Mastiff as he cant have anything that impacts on his neck.They are not expensive but may be too dificult for you to put on. It works well.
 
Dozzie just to be a pain, it was a Lupi that I had and he pulled so hard on it, he had an 'X' across his chest where the ropes crossed over and rubbed his hair off :o and I had to have a masseuse do something akin to the Heimlich manoeuvre to put my back right.
Plus you need to be a rocket scientist to work out what way round it is supposed to go :p
Although my dog does appear to have bulldozer somewhere in his pedigree, haha!

I have one of them to :p It didnt work on mine either and shes only an irish terrier so your experience was probably way worse lol

But defo the haltis are awesome i used one for ages and really sorted lil miss pully pants out :D and now i can just walk her in a normal collar again with no pulling!!
 
I have a 10.5 stone Ridgeback who as a 1-2yr old pulled for England!!

I used a Canny Collar on him - like a halti but doesn't turn the head when pulled, it merely pulls the chin to the chest.. I literally used this for maybe 6 weeks (Maximum) and he stopped pulling!! I could control him with one finger it was so effective, and IMO kinder than the Halti's - as advised if the dog is insistant on pulling it will only encourage him to bend his head to the side which can result in back/shoulder problems if prolonged!!

Good Luck - my boy is now in a simple slip lead that rarley comes into effect unless we see another dog and it jsut reminds him I am pack leader and pulling is not an option! ;)

I know what you mean about putting them on the right way lol! If you get it wrong they dont work at all! I also dont like the way they dont ease off. But I really had no choice and it worked for my dog. I wasnt allowed to have a collar or halti (neck vertebrae out of allignment) and harnesses were useless.

I think I would only use it as a last resort or if a dog had neck probs.

I guess also you were walking yours miles everyday whereas Mastifffs dont need that sort of exercise. They lay down to sleep after a mile. :D If they have a walk two days running they have to have a day off! Their choice! You say" walkies" and they open one eye, give you a filthy look and close it again. And immediately start snoring. " I am asleep.......zzzzzzzzzzzzzz":D
 
I can never work out WHY people use harnesses on dogs that pull or are bouncy...they were invented for sled dogs to PULL into,so to use one just gets it all so much worse. I use check chains,thin cord slip collars..or as a last resort G`rot collars from John Humphries We have rescue bull terriers in here,and most of them have`nt a clue about being polite on a lead,so retraining is essential before they become polite enough to adopt into normal ownership.
