Just remembered that I needed to ask about this!

Islay came with 4 weeks free insurance from the rescue charity, so I rang Petplan yesterday and activated it. Whilst I was on the phone to them I asked them how much it would cost to continue the cover - I was

at the cost though!

They quoted me £19.08 per month for budget cover (£4k vets fees per year) or £23.07 per month for standard cover (£6k vets fees per year)

The biggest bill I have had from a vets for a dog was £2,600 for my last black greyhound so I was thinking that budget cover would be sufficient (touch wood!)

So my question is (a) is it worth insuring your dog? I have had them all my life and have never insured one - the bill mentioned is the only big one I have ever had and (b) if you do insure your dog, do the rates I was quoted seem reasonable?

Islay is 5 in July BTW (if that makes a difference)

I would personally say...it is definatly worth insuring your pets...if I was not a nurse and got my treatment for next to nothing...then I would certainly have mine insured...vet bills these day...even for something routine is pretty costly..let alone a specialist referral....even more so with greyhound types...they are highly breakable

I would say the rates are reasonable....and petplan offer really good cover and settle pretty quick.

We are with Morethan and are covered for £7,000 per illness for Bumble Dog - thank goodness as we are near to that limit now.

They settle really quickly

We don't insure ours because of the number that we have we would be paying out more on insurance than we've ever had to pay for a bill. They are covered by the third party liability bit under the house insurance or contents (can't remember which) which would cover them/us should they get out of the house and cause an accident. We just find the money for vets fees should we need to and touch wood it's never been thousands. Like I said to the vet when Mouse had her C-sec, the dog's more important to me than the cost.

I always used to insure my dogs, originally a breeders block policy with DBI, and more recently with Tesco. However the premiums were very high for my GSDs so my current ones aren't insured. Last year Buffy suffered from immune mediated poly arthritis, and at the moment the bills are mounting up after complications having a lump removed from her tail, and I have wondered if I did the right thing. However I think insurance would still have cost me more, bearing in mind she is 7and a half and I would have been paying insurance for all that time. I am lucky in that my vets will let my pay in installments if I have a very big bill. She is insured for third party under my household policy.

We've got Bes and Dom (lurchers) insured with m&s for £190 each for the year, that covers £7000 vets fee's with a £50 excess. So glad we had it as Bes's broken leg cost £2500 and we just don't have that sort of money. M&S paid up with no problems. Some vets charge up to about £5000 for the op and after care she had so i'm glad we had higher cover. Plus we were lucky that everything was successful and the leg is straight as we could have incurred more costs for further op's or to remove the plate in her leg again.

Their helpline is quite handy for minor things too if the vets is closed.

Not sure what the premium for Bes will be next year though!!!

i have both mine insured with halifax...£6000 vet fees and £50 excess....i pay approx £25 for the two..ive claim 4 times for Peggy my almost 7yo....including a spinal injury last august which has also damaged her spinal cord and was paralysed in her hind legs and then she was only insured for £1ooo vet fees and her treatment was about £2500 so we had to pay the rest....so yes get insurance pay as much as you can afford
my insurance paid up really quickly
with any dog and regardless what breed they are, accidents can happen anytime

I also insure mine with Halifax, great cover and low excess which is imporant.
Amber is gone now but I've claimed over £3000 in the years I had her so well worth the small outlay each month.
