Millie lurcher is the first dog I’ve thought of insuring for many years, as she specialises in out of hours call outs! Last time it was to be stitched up.... now she isn’t let off the lead, so this morning (on a bank holiday Millie, really??!!!) she had a horribly swollen eyelid. No idea how she has done it, she went out in the garden last night about 9pm and yelped! I thought she might have got something in the eye (a piece of grass as I mowed the lawn yesterday) but neither the vet or I could find anything....

Millie is recovering well with a collar, some Metacam and eye ointment twice a day (she earned massive brownie points by standing completely still when I put the ointment in this afternoon!)

Am I right in thinking that, like horses, both of those conditions would now be excluded from insurance? I’m wondering if it’s worth it with a lot of exclusions already! She is only about 3 - PetPlan quote came out as £250ish last time I asked as she is officially a mongrel!

I wouldn't think the wound that needed stitching would lead to an exclusion, and if the eye is an injury then probably not that either, although they could consider it will leave a weakness. However, you never know with insurance companies, probably worth phoning and trying to speak to someone at Petplan.

When I insured Tawny with Agria I wanted to chack that her former injuries wouldn't cause exclusions so I listed them all. The only thing the man said was as she had impaled both stifles at different times if she had stifle problems in the future it would have to be proved that there was no link to the original injury.

I’m quite tempted.... although I don’t actually know yet what yesterday’s bill was, I hate to think!

I can't see the general cuts/bumps/scrapes of any sighthound would be an exclusion- it hasn't been on the new insurance when I listed all the self harm episodes. The one they wouldn't do was allergy as he's had reactions to bee stings three times now, so there might be potential for the fat eye to be considered an allergic reaction, and they might want to talk to your vet.
If you can, go for lifetime cover now and it can carry on over 8 years old, but not if you decide to change at 8 years.

Most of my sight hounds have injured themselves. I still let them run though. Its a risk worth taking to allow them to gallop.

Oh yes, not being off the lead isn’t because of possible injury - it’s because she doesn’t come back and disappears off for several miles after deer! They are all going to play in an enclosed 10 acre dog field this afternoon, should be fun!
