Newsbeat on Radio 1are discussing the RSPCA's intent to bring back dog licences for all owners.

At an approximate cost of £20.00 per dog, they believe it will encourage more responsibility for owners. Do you agree?

I don't think it will make the slightest bit of difference - rather like car insurance, those who don't already abide by the law won't bother with it.

How would they enforce it? I refuse to carry documentation when walking in the middle of nowhere and I don't see that police would start carrying microchip scanners around with them and doing spot checks!

We have 'dog licenses' here, £5 per dog from the local council but it varies by area how tightly they are enforced - FI when N died and we went and got Bella, because she was also a black and gold GSD, we just ran on that license for a year and then renewed the next year. Not exactly a failsafe system...
But in bigger towns and cities, they are starting to do home visits to anything registered as a 'Staff x' for example...

I am in contact with dog wardens through work and training but have never, ever met one out and about.

My dogs are tattooed, chipped and DNA tested also and always will be in future, nobody had to ask or force us to do it, it's just common sense and responsible breeders should ensure that at least one of the two former options are carried out either before or after their puppies/youngstock leave.

Whoops 'licenses' Spelling isn't my strongpoint :)

I agree it will be difficult to police but will be interesting to see how they roll this one out. Would also think that any documentation would be easy to replicate?

CC what is the idea behind having them where you are? do authorities think £5.00 would deter some people from dog ownership or is it much like horse passports, one rule for all?

Should have added that I wouldn't object to paying the £20 even though I'm already paying out for public liability insurance, previous cost of microchipping and so on, but I also don't think £20 would be enough to deter a casual (read: numpty) puppy buyer.

If I knew, I would tell you. It means the council has a record of the dog, where it lives, what colour it is, what it's name is, that's about it.
But as I just demonstrated, my dog could magically become undead, grow ten years younger and have a personality transplant and it wouldn't be checked out.

The passporting of horses has not exactly been a great success has it? Now dogs?

Sorry I don't think that £20 would stop irresposible breeders/ owners of dogs. It would just add to the cost of keeping a pet.

Silly idea.

O.k by the sounds of their spokesman, it's a money making scheme to fund stray dog collection.

In return, we get a record of our dogs details. Err I already know their names and colours thanks!

WHAT A LOAD OF TRIPE!

There is no way £20 would deter these numpty idiots who can't afford/know how to look after dogs. and... you can guarantee the social chavs who can't afford it would be given some sort of benefit to fund the Licence fee!!! Therefore ... pointless exercise to begin with!!

Not that i'm a synical old cow or anything!!!:D

Not to mention.... the people who have to have/require dogs for their job aka Gamekeepers!!

We have 9 now - yea great thanks for that ever-worsening money grabbing idiot government!!!

That is all!

As CC says our licences are £5 per dog, but if you have 3 or more dogs which are registered with the KC (ie pedigree dogs) or keep breeding bitches etc etc then you pay a group fee of I think £15, although this may have gone up, don't know.

I think it's the same as everything else though - law abiding dog owners will licence their dogs, other people won't.

CC I see our dog warden quite a lot out and about :D

When did you last have licences over here? When we moved over here, went to the Post Office to get a dog licence...understandably the woman looked at me like I was mad. :D

I don't think they would make any difference, apart from perhaps making money... as back home the only time I've seen it policed was when my grandparents Border Terrier went missing, when they reported it the licence was checked... pointless anyway as he had made his way to Belfast with a lovely old couple. :o :D

we have them here (Guernsey) and it is £5 per dog. They do not take any details apart from your name and address and number of dogs. the dogs have to wear a tag that states your initial and surname and parish letter.

it is supposed to pay for poo bins, i have never seen a dog warden, i presume we have them and the only place they are ever checked (the tags) is at dog school.

no idea how many people actually get them

I think the only way to do it as suggested for wardens to scan dogs randomly and check for chip, and liability insurance at the least, and for the owner to get points on thier licence if a complaint is made and be fined or dog removed pending the compliant and the owner and dog given the chance to attend a training class like you do when you speed:rolleyes:
Depending on owner and breed, also compulsary neutering.
A license to add the points to and to generate money for the wardens:rolleyes:
Make it legal for pups to be regisered from birth and breeders regulated, taxed and legally responsible for puppy for life and all breeders to have to pay an initial registration for each puppy and to be chipped there. (puppy farmers would love that) to pay £40 a pup for 100 puppies:rolleyes:

We have them here $15 for a fixed dog and $50 for an entire dog.

And as you know we probably have some over the worst breeding issues ever.

But i do like that its a back up to my microchip and i do like that my $15 goes to fund the HS.

ETA I have been stopped 3 or 4 times to ask to see his license.

Good old RSPCA, stopped rescuing dogs so they can persecute or was that prosecute? Loads of people will no longer donate due to bad experiences with them so they have to raise money somehow so it's back to the responsible dog owner tax them as they are not donating any more and those that get away with it now will still do so after the rest of us are taxed, just like equine passports!!

Anyway a piece of paper does not make a responsible dog owner and the irresponsible are very good at finding the loopholes!! I'm with Cayla tax those over breeding outside of KC rules!!!!

My town requires licensing. I think it is about $20 for each dog (more for unspayed or unneutered dogs) and they have to wear a tag on their collars that has a license number and town they are licensed in on it. I think the main purpose is to provide identification in case they are ever picked up by the dog warden or cause trouble. I am assuming (might be a big assumption here) that if they were found without their collars on then the town could seach by kind of dog and see if they can figure out who owns the dog by their description (we have to provide breed, color, name, vet info, rabies certificate (maybe they do it to have people prove their dogs have this too in case of a bite?), and all contact information). I have been asked to prove licensing before when out walking my dogs but the warden didn't want to see the tag, he asked me for my name and address and he looked them up on a listing.

I agree though, it doesn't mean that all dogs are licensed in town, just that those who are responsible enough get them licensed. The others risk paying the fine (pretty low) if they are caught but that's about it.

Well I remember when license were 7/6 old money (:o) which is around 35p and the irresponsible owners didn't bother than, so unless a very rigorous check systems is installed I very much doubt they would pay £20. I like the idea of breeders registering pups for a license, and then getting money back from new owners, but what chance the chavs breeders bothering to do that?

I haven't read all the responses but IMO Dog licences are a good idea BUT I think it needs to be linked to compulsory microchipping and free 3rd party liability with the payment of the dog licence, therefore ensuring more dog owners have insurance if a dog were to bite etc, even if it's another dog!

But the people who are doing bad to dogs now just wouldn't do it?

That's how it works here.
