My cousin's terrier was a mistake, her mother got loose one day and suddenly there were 3 more! The day the puppies turned 8 weeks she was tragically killed by a car, and therefore Titch is very precious to us.

Many months ago now, it was decided to breed a litter off her (please no comments on that decision, my cousin's familly would keep one and we had homes ready for the rest of the litter). She lost this litter at around 3 weeks, and the vet advised us that she was probably stressed.

She was due to have another litter in 2 days time. She has shivered through both of her pregnancys, but the vet advised us that we weren't to worry. We kept her as stress free as possible, and pampered her thoroughly

. Unfortuantly, last night she gave birth to 3 dead puppies

By the advice of the vet on the phone, whilst rubbing one puppy to try and revive it, another was born extremely quickly, and she tried to eat it before we my auntie was able to grab hold of it. Althought I was not there, my auntie tells me that the puppies were black, by this I think that she meant the colour of their blood.

The vet has not given a definitive reason why this has happened, but suggested that it may be something to do with the father? She is very upset today, curled up in her bed. She wont eat or drink unless I put it on my hand and give it to her. She doesn't wish to get up, but she did give me a few kisses when I sat with her.

I just wondered if anybody has has this experience? We were so shocked to find them dead again, and it's hit us really hard. I doubt we will try again unless we can find a definitive reason for it and can rectify it.

Sorry for the long post I'm feeling quite down about it, and please be nice in your responses, it hasn't been the nicest two days

Sorry to hear about your pups. Your bitch hasn't miscarried as such but delivered dead pups. Unfortunately it does happen, and have to say I don't like the sound of a bitch shivering throughout her pregnancy. I presume the vet has checked her since she whelped, if not I would advise you to get this done as a matter of urgency, it sounds as if the puppies had begun to rot inside her, so I would think she should have antibiotics. If she were my bitch I wouldn't mate her again, much as you would like to have a pup from her. But please do get her checked by a vet if he hasn't already seen her.

Edited to correct pathetic spelling!

I agree with everything Murphy's Mum has said, she really does need to see a vet asap.
I personally think your bitch is trying to tell you something and wouldn't dream of mating her again, in fact as soon as things have calmed down in her body I would be having her spayed, no question about it. The next time it could be your bitch you are losing.

I have seen and experienced this , because I work in a vets, we often get emergency calls in regards to these sceanrios, Im im sure many on here will know of or have experienced this, he ones we deal with are usually young inexperienced animals, or very old animals, that were to old!! but often any animal, rabbits, cats dogs, if she was trying to eat them, it's as nature intended, her instincts told her there was something wrong and as in the wild they would eat or dispose, i.e not feed them, and they would die, she clearly is not for breeding, I would not try again, you may loose her, surely that is the most important thing, her wellbeing, loosing the puppies would not bother me at all, however loosing the bitch, would be terrible.

Yes she saw the vet first thing this morning, she has has an injection to stop the milk/antibiotics etc.

Having just spoken to my auntie on the phone it's decided not to try again, we couldn't bear to put her throught it all, and we never have tried the second time if we knew this would happen. We were cautious for the first few weeks, then have been so excited ever since... it's heart breaking to lose the puppies - and have Titch feeling so awful aswell.

I was very worried about the shivering... and although she saw the vet during the first pregnancy and was told it was nothing I advised they went back when it happened again with the second. But yet again they said not to worry, it's her way of coping?

The puppies were fully developed, but the blood was black. One of my main concerns was that as she was shivering all of the time, that maybe we didn't realise when she first came into labour? And maybe it was such a long awful labour that they died, but we didn't notice?

I feel so awful about it, but hope we did everything possible. We followed the vets advice, and now feel she is just trying to tell us that she is not able to carry puppies, which we are fine with.

Have you ever heard of the dog being the cause of miscarrying/still borns?

That is what I thought when she told me about her eating it... that she knew there was something wrong and it wasn't malice in any way...

Like I said above (before I read your post!) we are not going to try again. She is EXTREMELY precious to us... and the thought of losing her is unbearable and to see her so upset is heartbreaking
