I have an old girl Skye (lurcher) and year old whippet dog, who is entire.
Skye very rarely comes into season, and would never ever let anything mount her (I tried breeding her when she was younger) so I wasn't worried about castrating the dog. I want to keep him entire as he is a very well bred boy.
Problem is, Skye came into season last week (although I never saw her bleed at all!) and poor boy is beside himself with hormones. He went off his food on Friday and has hardly eaten anything since. I'm keeping them apart, spraying her constantly with bitch-stop, which helps, and the worst seems to be over now. Dog started picking at biscuits this morning, but being hard to keep weight on anyway he looks like a rack of ribs!
Any advice on how I can get the weight back on him? I think her season is coming to a close, so just need to concentrate on him eating now!
Normally he is fed 2 cups of bakers puppy in the morning, then 1 cup of bakers and 1 can of pedigree chum in the afternoon.
Sooo....weight gain advice please, esp from Whippet owners

Tripe - smells disgusting, looks even worse but supposed put weight on. Any pet shop should sell it frozen in packs, we used to buy 10 packs in a box. Defrost it and feed raw.

My dogs aren't eating great at the moment, but I think it's the weather, too hot, etc. You could add a little gravy to his biscuits to give it some flavour or just damp the biscuits down with a bit with hot water, easier for them to eat.

Thanks

He's not picky with his food at all, will eat ANYTHING! He's just been off grub while bitch is in season. Seems back to normal tonight and interested in food again.
But are there any easier ways to gain weight than feeding tripe?? Can't stand the stuff and don't fancy stinking the house out

I'm looking for a more workable long term high calorie diet.

I know what you mean - it's stinks

Not sure what to suggest then for weight gain, I always seem to be trying to keep mine lean.

I don't know anything about Bakers but my two are on Arden Grange complete but I still put a little something in with it as they don't tend to eat the biscuits alone. Some days it will be tinned dog meat, that's a first time for me, as none of my dogs have ever liked dog meat, sometimes tripe, sometimes chicken.

i would stop giving him pedigree as its full of rubbish and water it wont help him put weight on at all, my rottie who is entire is also a nighmare for putting weight on we give him a working dog food as more protein in it and it has put weight on him, the only way you will keep a good amount of weight on him if he is full of hormones would be to get him done, if this season is nearly over i would consider getting a friend or family to look after one nxt season so that he doesnt get all worked up.hope that helps
