Dog or bitch?

I've had 2 dogs in my lifetime, the rest have been bitches. I have 6 bitches at the moment and they are fantastic dogs. The male dogs I owned were lovely too but I was never as close with them as I am bitches. They also tended to stray a bit further away from me than any of my bitches ever have; the bitches are always with me and remain close, the dogs I had would wander off much further away. I also can't stand dogs cocking their legs on stuff!

Now my experience is limited to labradors, I have only had one dog, the rest bitches. I found the dog a delight, however he was much more wilful than my bitches have been, he needed more authorative handling to be obedient! However we did get him from labrador rescue, so he came with a lovely nature just not obedient. The other thing was that despite having no balls he would never start a fight but if a another male dog was up for it he would be, he would recall and not fight however it required attention when walking. I would have certainly have another male, but while bringing up my family I found bitches easier.

One other thing I found quite telling is that when we have been looking at the lab rescue societies for a lab in the past, there are mostly, by a large margin, boys!

I always have a dog as my special dog ( sadly ATM we are dog less as Usky was PTS at the end of the summer ) .
I adore all my dogs but dog dogs are very special they are more challenging because of the straying thing but I have been lucky all of mine have been loyal won't leave your side in a blizzard types .
I will get a dog puppy after we have done with travelling next year .i have only had Labradors all the bitches are so easy to train it verges on boring the dogs take a bit more work.

Interesting thread, I've just got a new puppy that's a bitch but I would have preferred a dog. I've mostly had boys because they've been soft, lovable and devoted to me. The bitches have been more independent with a stronger hunting instinct. However, the new girl is a rough collie X border collie and she's proving to be very loyal and affectionate, so at the moment, I can't say I have a particular preference for either.

The dogs cocking their legs over everything is a minus though.

Thank you for your replies - I think the straying problem is what I was worried about. I understand bitches but thought I might consider a dog this time round but it sounds like they could be a bit of a handful.

With cavaliers you really won't notice much difference :) The dogs tend to be more affectionate and reliant on their owners (the archetypal "mummys boys" :) ) whereas bitches tend to be slightly more self-contained whilst still being loving and cuddly.

I can't imagine you would have a problem with straying if you go for a cavalier, I've never known of one which has that tendency :)

I must say, my dog is a dog and I have had no problems with him straying. Completely the opposite, I have more chance of losing my shadow than him leaving my side. He is the most amazing loyal dog anyone anywhere could want ( although does have neurotic tendencies but blame that on the collie not the sex)

I've got two dogs, both intact and neither stray. The younger one particularly is stuck to me like glue. He's very much a people dog though!

I think it depends on the animal's personality more than gender. I haven't had a bitch, partly because we have two intact dogs but also I'd worry more about a bitch's health. Rightly or probably wrongly, I think there is more to go wrong!

Someone told me once that bitches tend to prefer men and vice versa, but I'm not sure whether that's true!

I think it's personal preference, I've had 2 dogs and 3 bitches, I prefer my girls, but I have quite a few friends that prefer dogs.

Thanks for that - I would prefer a bitch but there seems to be a waiting list for tri coloured bitches.

Dog or Bitch? It's never troubled me. I've always considered the animal regardless of gender. Currently we have 3 dogs and 2 bitches, but by next week, that could be reversed!

Alec.

Prefer bitches, I have spent weeks trying to find my toy poodle puppy (coming home at the end of November!), the red toy poodles seem to be very popular anyway but the bitches are reserved within hours of birth/advertisement, so it took a lot of phone calls to find my girl and even then it was a mad dash to get in and see them and pick one before the other 12 people (only 2 girls left out of a litter of 4).
I can't comment on the differences because I've always had bitches but what's put me off dogs is that I find the cocking of the leg really annoying, so I automatically go for a bitch :)

I have mainly had bitches and think I prefer them. Having said that I currently have my daughters dog living with me and he is just as affectionate as my girls. With regard to waiting lists, I would consider it a plus point if a breeder has a waiting list, those breeders who have a number of puppies available would sound warning bells to me.

I have one dog and two bitches I would say that my dog is far more needy and attention seeking. Hes loyal but fickle at the same time. The girls how ever show their love less often but it almost feels more genuine I would most probably always choose a bitch from now on however I also believe every animal is different.

I've only ever had one and she's a bitch and think that I would always go for a bitch in future. But then I just prefer female animals, I have a mare and when I used to keep guinea pigs, all but one were girls!

One of ours came from a lab rescue (a male!) and I follow them on Facebook, and you're probably right, most are dogs. However I also follow a GSD rescue and they're pretty much a 50/50 mix.

We've had both over the years, and have one of each now. The boys have been more playful and wandered more until neutered. The girls have been generally cleverer (in a cunning way!) and definitely greedier. They've all hoovered up every bit of crap possible, often throwing it up later! They've all been very slightly more cuddly. I'd say our males have almost been prettier!

Only ever had the one dog and she is a bitch but I didn't really have a choice- she was an only puppy in her litter and the only phalene puppy available at the time I wanted but I fancied a bitch anyway as I don't like leg cocking plus my cat and both my ponies are male so I thought it would be a nice change. I think I would go for a bitch again as she is really wonderful- feisty but so loving and loyal, but I wouldn't say no to a dog if it was the right one.
