Dog rescue advice please

Ok, I think I have made my Dad cave in. Quick background, always had dogs, last one was a rescue that came to us in unbelievable circumstances (only puppy left alive in litter in back of articulated lorry), and was an Alsation x. She was PTS because of cancer, and Dad was heartbroken and said no more dogs. That was over 15 years ago, and I think he's coming round to it now

Anyway, he would like a rescue dog. Breed not an issue but must be a "big dog" (for that read, bigger than a jack russell). Happy to take on dogs with issues, he's always had rescue dogs, and is seriously good with them.
Now the issue. Parents live in (and run) a pub. Ground floor is pub and above that is their accomodation which is huge 3 bed apartment. However they have no garden as such, but do live in the middle of nowhere in Cumbria

So are there any rescues about that would consider them, in the North West? Dad loves long walks, and I couldn't say enough how much of a fab life the dog would have. He has all the time and patience in the world, and obv with the pub, they are about all day and night

I did just email him the details of this dog, but I don't think RSPCA home without a fenced area

Best thing with regard to the RSPCA as they are such a big organisation is to approach your local centre/branch direct as each area will have slightly different guidelines for what will be and won't be accepted, I would say as a guess that they may say no to a puppy without a garden, but possibly an adult they'd be ok with, but as said, this is a hunch, call them direct. Other than that also try dogs trust, but I think their lines would be pretty similar to the RSPCA, you can also contact the kennel club to find out your local breed rescues, i.e GSD rescue etc, any breed you'd be interested in will have various rescues dotted about. And also don't forget the local pound, stray dogs only get 7 days boarding, then if no owner has come forward and no centre has room to take them on, they are put to sleep, so always worth trying that avenue. Also your local vets may know of something in need of finding a new home, so you could try them.
 
Also Kerilli found that stray rotti, she's looking after it currently and will keep it I think if no-one else can offer a good home, pm her for details.

rang local RSPCA direct, basically no, unless they have a fenced area :(
 
going to have a chat with my Dad. Mum has been pestering him a bit over it, but it really would be good for him. He sits there sometimes with a drink in one hand, and moves his right hand down by the side of the sofa as if to stroke the dog - then realises she's not there :-(
looking at all these rescue sites is making me sad, so many unwanted dogs
 
Bigger than a JR.. would a staffie count then? cos I can put you in touch with the northern rescues? otherwise, why not google rescues/dog wardens in your area.

Just a thought as well - my friend lives over a pub and had 2 large dogs (doby and leonburger) so they fenced off part of the beer garden, very securely for their dogs?

there's no garden at all :( there's a paved non smoking eating bit, and a paved bit by the carpark for drinkers
Staffie, yes would count, he's very fond of staffies :D

I think the only breed he wouldn't have would be another Red Setter - he loves them but it's the loopiness!
