This could be long so bare with me please.

Our 5 year old border collie was very well mannered. We were so proud of her on walks as she had perfect recall no matter what the distraction - cyclists, joggers, sheep, other dogs etc. When she was a pup she was a chaser - she chased joggers, cyclists - anything that moved. But with training, and trying to spot potential things to chase before she did - we cracked it by recalling her, getting her to watch us and wait until whatever had gone passed. Over time, she stopped paying any attention to anything else other than us - We were more interesting than a jogger etc.

However....we now have a JRT pup. Training is going well. In the house we have sit, wait, leave and recall. Both dogs still 'work' everyday to reinforce training and have fun.

We let the little one off the lead when out walking and have recall...but big dog has ignored us the last coupe of days and has chased a jogger and a cyclist!!!!! She has not done that for years - she totally went deaf! I am soooooo disappointed. Baby however took no notice of the jogger or cyclist and came straight back to us.

I suppose I am asking why she has suddenly gone backwards 4 years in her training?
Have we upset her introducing a puppy?

Came home tonight and did some 'fun work' with big dog to reinforce manners and respect.

I would love to know what is going on in her head to make her go backwards as I am now feeling guilty for introducing a pup and I'm worried I am ruining my big dog.

Thanks in advance

Can't really help im afraid but I have the same problem my 8yo has perfect mannners usually and I havent got to the stage of letting Dexter 15wk old PJRT pup off but I have noticed on walks Frank is more reluctant to listen!! its like he thinks this is his time to chase squirrels in peace. Both dogs get on great at home and at the yard so hopefully someone can offer help! Dexters in puppy school at the mo so we are just learning the recall etc

She has probably just been put out of wack abit having a new puppy in the house.

I would take her out alone and work on some recall on a long line and then take the puppy with you and work with her on the long line.
Lots of yummy treats when she does come back so she doesn't feel like she is being looked over.

Agree with Katie - I see a pattern in your posts that you want them to be together all the time but there is nothing wrong with doing things one on one, in fact having a litter brother and sister I would actually say it is vital to have the dogs doing stuff independently x

I agree with Cavecanan. Having 3 dogs, it is important,to my mind at least, to have a bit of 1:1 time with each dog.I'm sure it helps them.

They both have plenty of 1:1 time with me and OH and get walked on their own at times too.

Big dog has just started chasing again when she is out walking with the little one

I've found my lot behave different in company than they do alone, like all of my dogs know how to walk to heal and on their own they will but together it's a real battle to get them to do it.

Maybe she's pulling a crafty and trying to get the pup in trouble ;) lol

they are like children. can go a little feral when a new one comes along. lots of brain work, some one to one, some joint. its an attention seeking phase i think....
