Dogs at Badders

Dogs should not be allowed to go. I wouldnt even comtemplate taking mine. I went to Burley. Me and friends were eating our dinner (a nice burger) dog comes and sh*ts in front of us. Owner cleared it up immediatly, but god knows what it had been eating coz the stench was around for ages. Ruined dinner and make us all feel ill. Going around the shopping, dogs are a nuisance in the tents. I was in one tack stall, trying to look at the bits, and someone had their dog pressed up against the wall poor thing, as loads of people pushed past.

I have been at other events were there was poo everywhere round the xc course, and silly yappy terriers barking at every dog that it saw.

A friend of mine took her two JRT to a small, quiet country fair (which I dont have a much as a gripe about) with a double lead. Toddler came along not under mothers control, and walked straight in the middle of the double lead. Had the dogs have been nasty, the child would have been in a mess.

Dont take them.

I have thought that some children should be on leads as well as dogs ;-)

(especially when they are straying onto the course and not supervised at all)

I tok my lab last year to the XC and he loved it - I really can't leave him coz he gets seperation anxiety. He's used to horses and v well behaved - he didn't get trodden on, didn't chase anyone, I cleared up after him and he had a great day

I've also taken him to Gatcombe several times - tbh he's better behaved than a lot of the kids u see running around causing mayhem

I took Star the pointer last year on Saturday and she's not even that well behaved but we managed with her and she loved it!

We were only there for a few ours though.

I think dogs do have to fit in with owners a bit TBH. If i was going to badders for the weekend I'd much rather take my dog with me and it have to put up with a bit of hussle and bustle (but have a whale of a time for the rest of the weekend) than send it to a kennel all weekend.

Totally agree! Mine wouldnt survive a kennels and I wouldnt want to put them in one either!

Have to say, I saw a lot of miserable children there last year as well - who were getting squashed in the shopping areas, were shattered walking the cross country course, and generally a bit fed up. I know most enjoy it, but I saw quite a few who looked like they'd much rather be elsewhere - especially babies and toddlers.

Yes, I know I'm going to get my head bitten off for that - especially as I don't have children - but is just my opinion!

No me neither!! Mine go to my mum's when I go on holiday (abroad) but I'd definitely take them to Badminton if I was going for the weekend!!

There are a few responsible and caring dog owners who take their dogs to Badminton. They are the ones who steer well clear of the shops and large crowds (often missing many of the riders rounds as a consequence). But there are others who just don't seem to care. They drag their dogs into the crowds and around all the shops, and I feel so sorry for them....and the little children being pushed and jostled around.

I also don't think the shops are the place for tiny tots or dogs. I love my dogs and they are very well behaved, but I would never consider taking them to Badminton.

If you really have to take the dogs with you then maybe you can all take it in turns to keep the dogs well away from the crowds of people?

I completely agree with you Twiglet - and I often see this on sundays as well (and sadly children ARE allowed into the grandstands

). So often I end up sitting near a young child whose parents want to watch the show-jumping and expect the rest of us to put up with a whining/screaming child kicking the back of our seats because they are bored/tired/cold...

What do you do though - not go anywhere cos your bratty kid/dog will get the face on?

Nope.......but would rather encounter a dog on the cross country course than a screaming child in the grandstand :P

Either leave the child with a baby sitter, take it on the Saturday when there is more to do to keep it amused, or miss going to Badminton etc for a few years until the child is old enough. I don't think it's fair on young children to be expected to sit still and quietly on a hard plastic seat watching 20 odd rounds of show jumping. It's also not fair on those who pay a lot of money for their seats etc to have a child having a tantrum behind them when they are trying to watch.

It was Jonty Evans that got chased by the loose dog. Could have been very nasty, it would be sensible not to allow dogs to go to events that get so busy. Poor bloke though, he also got cut up by the ambulance going to the french horse right in front of number 8, a bl**dy scary combination on a bank, and then the half hour hold up, followed by the dog. Well done to him for finishing after all that!

We took Minnie last year because everyone kept saying it was great for dogs, she hated every minute of it! we couldn't go round the shops as she got worried she was going to get stood on (understandably) and not everyone had their dogs under control and she kept getting lunged at by other dogs. It was Sunday and maybe that was the wrong day to take her but as we only live down the road she wont be coming again, she will be much happier at home.
Interesting we used to take her to Portobello Road every Saturday when we had a shop there and she used to come to all the antiques fairs we stalled out at, all very, very busy places with lots of crowds and she was quite happy at these, it was just too much for her at badders, maybe a big dog would have been happier.
As for kids, I have to say how would a child learn to behave in public if you never took it out?

Its the minority that spoil things as usual. I fyour a responsible dog owner you will know how to look after your dog, have a nice time

Only thing I would say is not to leave them unattended as with so many people....

Sorry if this has already been said (I'm in a bit of a rush, so don't have time to read them all!) but the Langford Trust run a dog creche, manned by Bristol vet students (I helped man it last year). They take your dog for 2 hours at a time, for a donation of £5. You can bring dogs back in for another 2 hours but their policy is that after 2 hours you must come and give them a walk about before they can be left again, which is only fair on the dog after all. They have water and attention and you can come and settle your dog in before you leave them. All the details are taken down, so your dog won't be given back to the wrong people! Hope that helps, again sorry if someone's already posted it.
