I was sent this on Facebook and it really upset me. There is a new trend which when people rehome their dogs (for whatever reason) on sites such as preloved and gum tree they are frequently being used as bait dogs. There was an incident whereby a woman let her retreiver go and then had a call a couple of weeks later from the police (the dog had been chipped). The dog had had its mouth duck taped and was then used as bait. I was also sent some awful pictures. Now this happened in Guildford, Surrey which is horribly close to home.

So, without getting into the rights and wrongs of people passing on their pets, please pass on this warning. Also makes my blood run cold to know that this is on the increase. Dog fighting. Truly an experience for the complete idiots without a brain cell between them.

Dogs get "given away" or sold cheaply on Bumtree and Preloved all the time,it stinks does`nt it? Would`nt have thought a retriever was much of a bait dog..there are loads of staffie crosses on ther, poor things.

Indeed, all those 'I am looking for a pup/dog for my wee boy but cheap or free as we don't have much money...his last dog died and he is heartbroken :(' ads are a dead giveaway.
Also used for picking up breeding bitches for puppy farms/free or cheap dogs to sell on at a huge profit.
I'd believe them if there weren't so many with exactly the same wording.
One of the many reasons I hate these sites.

I found a dog on preloved that needed re homing last year, went up to oxford to pick her up,asked if they wanted to see my house etc all the usual checks. They weren't interested, only in my 60 quid cash. She was filthy, smelly, very thin. open bleeding sores all over her from mites making her scratch, full of round worms, hardly hair on her body etc. They promised to send her vaccination record on, 5 months later and still asking them no vaccination card so went out to get it done this end. Then, I found out via facebook, this "Rescue centre" deals in dogs some of which are stolen. They have been reported to the RSPCA and police but no action taken (surprise, surprise)
they should be avoided, place is a dump, you are not allowed in the place they meet you at the gate and they don't look after the dogs in their care

Both the rescue centre and the kennels supplying them with dogs are mentioned on this link, it takes alot of time to read it but it is worth it and please pass the warning on about the centre and kennels.

I have to say that I have been very naive in not thinking this sort of thing would happen. I am very aware of how pounds work (7 days PTS) and how rescues are overwhelmed but I have obviously only dealt with "real" rescues who bust the proverbial gut to rehome and place their dogs. I was in shock about the bait dogs but to see how a kennels is trying to cover up that dog was awful. I cannot see why when the owner is hunting for the dog, its chipped and cared for, a rescue would rehome so fast, unless its because the rescue would have got a rehoming fee very quickly.

I despair of this sort of situation, about 3months ago a woman advertised a 3yr old unspayed bitch with papers to go as an only dog as wasnt good with them(obviousley not socialised). She was asking £80 for her and so I rang to see if I could persuade her to contact one of the Dobe rescue homes because I told her the dog might end up at a puppy farm and have a terrible life. The woman said she wanted £80 for her and wasnt giving her away and put the phone down. What can you do? It really upset me.

Grrrrrrrrrr- not alowed to actually use the words I would like to. as it would just read like this "******* Stupid, irresponsible ******* ********"
That is all

It is my understanding that they use a more 'docile' breed that won't fight back. I had no idea that they taped their mouths up though.

On Limerick Animal Welfare's site there was a story of a beautiful little lurcher, Elsie, that they found who had been used as a bait dog. Her injuries were horrible and it took a long time to nurse her back to health. She is best friends with another lurcher and they want to home them together. I would have thought she would have been terrified of other dogs for life.

I 'mislaid' my terrier whilst out walking near an industrial estate on 12 May last year and since then have spent at least once a day on Doglost. I am forever amazed at the amount of dogs that simply disappear into the ether, including mine, never to be seen again. I can't help but wonder if more than a few of these are used as bait dogs.

Sadly I think this has been going on for years and now it is becoming more widespread. I understand the RSPCA do good work in this area though.

Heartbreaking. The behaviourist who is my trainer's business partner was working with a rescued 'bait' dog last year... it is my worst nightmare, tbh:(

The human race is a constant disappointment, thank goodness I know some thoroughly decent and dedicated people to balance out all the tosspots!

The animal shelter I used to work at started charging €100 adoption fee to stop people adopting dogs to use as bait dogs.

She also used to make checks on anyone looking for "a few kittens" cos apparently they use them for bait as well

When we were in TX we saw hundreds of bait dogs come into the shelter. They usually have their teeth filed down and don't last very long as bait dogs which is why they would regularly turn up on the shelter steps over night almost dead.

As a snapshot of dogs in the UK, Preloved et al. paint a pretty grim picture. :(

Here we have Tess a pedigree rottweiler bitch now 2 1/2 years old, she is a full pedigree with all papers and also legally docked tail. she is a big bonned dog and a very good healthy size, she has also not been spayed so is perfect for breeding and due to come on season very soon as has 2 seasons per year. we have 2 children aged 5 and 7 who she is very good with and is also very good with oher dogs when out walking ect. unfortunatly we are having to rehome her due to my wife having to go to university and would like a quick rehoming for her so are willing to here offers and any questions please ask

We are looking for a dog to become a part of our family as we sadly lost ours a few months ago. Cheap or free to a very good home would be ideal. I cannot get on here very oftern so if u have the ideal dog for us please contact me

First three ads from my local Preloved. I'm not one to talk as Dax was advertised in local paper and on Preloved, we went to see her the same day as the advert was posted and the guy's phone was ringing off the hook for her and the other dog he was advertising. She could have ended up anywhere (and the other unspayed female, I fear, probably has ended up in a poor situation).

It makes me mad but people won't be told. Members of my own family, reasonably intelligent individuals (hah), have berated me for having her spayed 'because the puppies would be lovely and you could have made a fortune'.

I've read the same story that OP posted except it was a GSD. Sick.

Unfortunately, I have also read on one of the husky forums of a rescue dog (husky) that has permanent scars on her back legs from the wire these scumbags used to hold her above a pit while the fighting dogs jumped up to attack. The police also recovered a very young pup (I seem to recall 4 months) that was tied to a car to 'see how fast it could run'.

People who do this are sick, weak and should be locked up with the key thrown away. I can't bring myself to look at 'dogs&puppies' sections in free papers / online etc.

All of us who have read this can get onto gumtree and pre loved to make them aware of the problem and ask them to change their rules so as no dogs or any animal can be offered free to a good home.I'm going to start with preloved, can others please do the same?

to be fair - this warning was posted by Gumtree.. I also forwarded it to Staffie welfare in Guildford to post on their site..

I am happy to send them both an e-mail and also Trade It. It probably will not have too much affect unless they are deluged with similar, but having read the posts on this thread I am sickened anew with the treatment meted out to all these poor animals.

I have made a start and got a reply from pre loved asking for more info, they are investigating, we will see if they take it seriously, Oz

Hmm. Don't suppose you can blame them - the more adverts they have the better I expect.

I will contact the RSPCA to see if they have any published evidence of this, meanwhile if anybody can provide any links (newspaper or otherwise) of free pets being used for training fighting dogs, it would be very helpfull.

If one avenue of sourcing bait dogs can be closed down, that would be a start.
