We're supposed to heading down to the Lizard camping next weekend but I'm getting a little concerned about camping with a dog in the heat. We've taken Daisy on walking holidays before but always when it's been cooler. Any thoughts on taking a dog camping when it's this hot?

Thanks

I've camped in Europe with dogs, just made sure plenty of water to hand, loads and loads of foil sheets (you can get them in most bargain stores, there's Aluminet, which is a giant wrap-around affair, or just get the sheets that plumbers use to put behind radiators, and a few good strong magnets to affix them) to put around car or crate or tent, you could also look into cool mats and cool coats. If you haven't already, whatever the weather, invest in a vent lock/tailgate lock, can be used on tailgates and sliding doors in vans, depending on size. We didn't actually do much as it was too hot lol.

I guess it all depends...

The journey down will probably be in an air conditioned car. Once there, the night time will be similar to at home.

In the day time if the dog is used to going and has shade/water and can relax then that is fine. I guess walking could be done in the morning early?

The real issue would be if you wanted to be active late morning or afternoon, as obviously the dog could not be left secure in this heat, and would not enjoy pavements/activity.

So, if you are happy to also sit in the shade from mid morning onwards, seems fine!

We'll be doing mainly coastal walking so little to no pavement and hopefully lots of time in the sea. We could easily walk in the morning and swim in the afternoon. I guess my worry is her not having anywhere to cool down but the air conditioning in the car would probably be as effective as anything...

I think with anything activity related you have to be sensible. Temperatures are set to be high again next week so we will be back to early morning / late evening walks only. We live on the coast and wouldn't dream of walking the dogs on the coastal paths in the heat. The sand is also too hot to walk on in the high temps.

From 12th August spaniels and labs will be beating and picking up on the moors. I asked on a gundog forum how they planned to cope and the consensus was you pick a dog that is ok in the heat for the worst of it, don't let them tear around unecessarily and make sure they cool down and rest between working. I am sure you can manage all that. Just think of those nice shady beer gardens waiting for you...

aaaw, love the Lizard-had three lovely holidays round those parts-have a great time.

as said, ventlock, foil window shades/crate covers (make an enormous difference) and whenever you can get the dogs paws and undercarriage wet at the least and keep the walking to first/last thing.

This is timely as we’d planned to go camping tomorrow for a few days. We’ve decided to go to a different campsite which is in the forest so no direct sun. There’s also a river close by which we aim to use early in the morning. I think the dogs will be fine, but if not we’ll come home.

Do you camp with electric? If so it might be worth getting a fan type thing that could keep the tent cooler. That's what I will be doing of I go over the summer.
