I assume there is no "part bred" register with the KC, like there is with horses?

But....are there classes for obvious pedigree dogs that have no papers? I'm assuming the answer is no, as this is the whole point of The Kennel Club's existence.

I've had it mentioned to me several times already that Harvey has wonderful bone, a very nice head and would do well showing. Problem is, he's not KC registered. Mum is KC registered, dad has his papers but was was never registered. Now, I'm not normally particularly bothered about showing but have been quite flattered by some of the wonderful comments. When I tell people he's not KC registered they "sigh" and say it's such a shame, given how nice he is and I should be out showing him...but....obviously I can't show him can I?

I presume the only classes available to us would be at local village shows and the like? Waggiest dog classes etc? Unless we opt for obedience classes......but let's face it, he's a Spangle so that's unlikely to prove successful.

There is a "working dogs" register. My collie cross is registered for agility and crufts flyball. This register is for agility and obedience dogs and the like.Obviously you can't do showing Championship Shows or Open Shows.
For the local exemption shows you don't have to be registered at all.
Just contact the KC and they will let you know all you need to.
It may be possible to get your dog registred if the dad had papers I don't know.

That was all I could think of, off the top of my head, as a way of show casing what a nice dog he is, without doing "proper showing", if you know what I mean?

It could be a winner you know.....£250 for every funny clip shown of them on "Animals do the Funniest Things" Might be more profitable than actually winning the classes!

No, there is no part bred register. There is a working register, where dogs can eb registered for obedience, agility etc and don't need parents to be KC reg, but in Harveys case you would only be able to show him at fun shows. However they do have pedigree classes at these, usually split into groups, ie. gundog, hound etc. Should warn you that these often are full of "rosette hunters" who have dogs that win at ch show level

What a shame his sire isn't registered, are both the sires parents kc reg, because you used to be able to register them late if this was the case, but would need to be DNA tested etc. However, if you are not bothered about showing (and I don't blame you) it is probably not worth the hassle

Oh I don't think for a second there's a chance of registering him.

It can only be done by the breeder, surely? There would be a chain involved. Firstly the breeder would have to go back to the sire's breeder to see if they can register him....then the litter would need registering....blah blah.

I'm not bothered that he's not KC registered, in reality. I knew he wasn't when I bought him and I never did any showing with Jasper and rarely even looked at his paperwork.

It's just a shame to have such a nice example of the breed and not be able to show him off in some form.

Does that mean a dog has to be registered somewhere to be able to do agility? I had no idea!

Oh I agree. Not worth the hassle at all. I didn't think there would be much available to him, showing wise, as this is the whole point of the KC registration.

I do plan to have him castrated anyway, as there are plenty of stud dogs around. The fact that he's not KC registered reinforces my feelings of having him castrated. Had he been KC registered, I might have thought otherwise. He would have needed to be entire for showing.

I don't know if both of the sires parents were KC registered. I've never asked. As I say, I'm not all that bothered about KC registration as he is ultimately just a pet.

I take it you can register any dog on that then? I mean, they don't have to have KC paperwork? I'm pretty sure I've seen crossbreeds in agility classes, so I think I've just answered my own question.

Nope don't have to be pedigree or have any paperwork for working register.
Re Harveys dam, I know it does not matter to you,but if the dam was not registered in the breeders name they would not be able to register pups anyway even if the sire had been registered The pedigree is not sent away so you should have been able to see that, and they should have been able to give you Harveys pedigree. The only thing needed to transfer ownership is the KC reg form, and they are usually pretty quickly nowadays.

You can usually find companion dog shows that have slightly more 'normal' classes, my kids old school run one that had 'serious' classes, best 'working' breed and non working , split into puppy, dog and veteran, as well as subdivisions for dog and bitch. Also you then get all the fun classes.

You can certainly show him at companion shows...these are run under kc rules and liscensed by the kc. Its what used to be called an exemption show, they run pedigree classes alongside the 'fun' type classes. You will find yourself up against some stiff competetion sometimes, they are widely used as a training ground for young dogs and/or novice handlers before progressing onto open shows and champ shows. Me and Flora did alot of them in the summer. Go and show him off if you want to! I like companion shows they are good fun although the classes can be huuuuuggggee and can be alot of waiting around in the ring. Its good socialisation for them too though both with other dogs and allowing people (judges) to 'go over them'. Class entries are normally only about a pound and rosettes are usually to 5th place. Most also have sacks of food/other prizes and trophies. Alot of them run alongside larger horse shows or county shows so can be a really nice day out broken up with some horsey/doggy shopping at trade stands and watching the horse classes/sj or whatever.

Thank you Temsik! I have joined the FB group.

This is exactly the sort of shows I was thinking of. You're a star! I was hoping I wouldn't have to stick to "do with waggiest tail" classes.

I do think it'd be nice to show him off, to some degree, as he's such a lovely example of the breed.....even though he is un-papered.

Yes, any dog. Jess was a complete stray, we didn't even know how old she was. The vet made a guestimated guess and we work on that.
