Anyone whos done it how much was it?
did you practice in a private field / have proper lessons? or on L plates with a friend?
if you had lessons how much were they?
thanks for any advice :)

I used a company and paid just under £700 for a course and the test using their jeep and trailer. They were brilliant and I passed 1st time :)

Near me in Leicester a LGV company do the B+E over 3 half days with test on day 3 for all inclusive price of £650

If you are looking at only towing one horse then with the right vehicle and trailer you can do that on a B only licence - see the HHO Towing clinic link in my signature at the bottom of this post

The B+E test
No medical or theory test required
Read a number plate from a certain distance
VIDEO - Show Me Tell Me Questions - usually 5
The next three can be in any order:-
VIDEO - Reversing Exercise - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
VIDEO - Uncouple/couple up - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
One hour road drive - includes the independent drive and is done virtually the same as the basic car test

DISCLAIMER - I have no connection to any companies which may be featured in those videos

This is interesting BUT NOT RECOMMENDED – a B licence towing set up can be presented for the B+E test but L plates must be used for the test. So you can train yourself, go to test by yourself, fit L plates, do the test, then, pass or fail, remove L plates and drive away by yourself.
DSA B+E TEST AND VEHICLE/TRAILER REQUIREMENTS

SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.
All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.
The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner

I did mine with data academy in Leicester - they were fantastic and I passed first time. Was just under £700 I think. 2 friends have also used them - 1 passed first time, the other second.

Definately have a couple of lessons even if you've towed (with supervision) for ages as the test involves a pretty difficult reversing manouver for which you can only stop and correct your line twice before it's an automatic fail

I had never really towed but did a 1.5 day lesson and then the test in testers car with trailer (a flatbed one, much easier than with a horse trailer). Including exam fee it was about £490. Using the testers car gave loads of advantages (automatic beepers for when I got close during the reversing etc). Having the lessons really helped my confidence as well - but the towing was not difficult it was the regular driving bit that I nearly failed on! Most people I know said the same, you need to drive like you did 'properly' when you first took your test!

Or put another way .... you can do 2 seperate forward shunts for 1 minor marked down but do 3 forward shunts and its a fail

I did mine in May this year and passed first time!! i did a bit of practising with reversing, then did a day tuition with the test at the end in north wales!! £300 in total!! :)
That was with Tilstons school

Look into grants for doing it. I did a weeks training and the test which was meant to be around £600 but got £200 of it paid off because of some sort of women in rural industries grant scheme thing, however they were the good old days, doubt the government funds anything like that any more.

The department are a bunch of #####s charging us on average £700 to sit a completely unnecessary test whilst my 94 year old man is allowed to pull a trailer. Any excuse or rule to keep a few posh t##sers in a job! Rant over.

OP - you have not answered my question -

Is this for towing just one horse?

If it is then you could do that on a B only licence which you already have and that needs the right vehicle/trailer combination to do so

I have just done mine 2 weeks ago, i did a full days training then 12 pm to 2pm next day with test at 2.30pm

The total cost including a assesment before hand to see if i need 1 or 2 days training and also including test fee was £560

the test was easy i passed it with no faults, as long as you have been driving a few years its very easy to do.

just blooming expensive.

No advice Im afraid but Ive bought new truck/trailer and my poor mothers keeps having to come out with me on various trips ... hoping to do my test before Xmas :o

sorry i was just reading, i dont know tbh, i would rather do the trailer test just to be on the safe side/bring friends.

Fair enough :)

My thinking was that if just intending to tow with only one horse then the test might have been avoided using the right set up for B licence towing
