I bought my pony 6 months ago as a 14hh Haflinger. I wasn't convinced he was that big when I saw him, but I look fine on him so didn't care. Finally got round to measuring him today with a proper stick and he's 13.1/13.2 at an absolute push! Means he qualify's for the local show 13.2hh and under class so my niece can ride him though :) x

Mine was advertised as 15.2hh, he's actually a snip under 15hh.
I wouldn't have gone to see him if he'd been advertised as that though, as I wanted 15.2 minimum, and would have missed out on a really great horse, so I'm not complaining!

Same here. I wouldn't have gone to see him if advertised as 13.1hh. I'd have missed out too x

I wanted a 'wee' one this time around and bought a 16.1 tb which was the top of my height range. Everyone kept saying how big he was so I finally measured him -tape says 17. Whoops!

We had a novice girl at our yard who went out with her mum, they both have no horse experience so the pony they were told 14'3, when they turned up we all thought there is no he was that height, we measured it and he was 13'2. But the girl still would not have it, when he was next to my girl at 15'3 they both said she looks so big well that because she is comparied to the pony. To the day he passed away they told everyone he was 14'3, perhaps its a Haffi thing.

Daughter's SJ pony was advertised as 14.2. We thought he was small but fell in love and bought him. When we had him measured officially for BSJA he was 14 hands and one quarter inch ! He had springs in his legs tho and was a fab and successful SJer.

My passported 15 2 has had growth spurt and is now 16 1, Im 5 2 and I don't think hes stopped yet hes not 6 til june .;)

Oh - I sympathise.

Can't bring myself to admit that mine are anything other that 16-something-hands. Tend to round up or down accordingly (because 15.3 is too small to get my head around and 17hh is too big).

Nothing wrong with a little bit of denial I think - irrelevant over 15hh for most purposes anyway...

(Almost never sell one though)

Yep I experienced this too. Advertised at 14.1, upon measuring was 13.2. Luckily over the past year has shot up though and now IS 14.1 at rising 5. Hopefully a couple of years growing still in there though as 14.3 is what I was hoping for!

This is what measuring sticks are for. Most people have no idea what height their horses actually are. I'm OK guesstimating with horses (I know the top of my head is 17.1h), hopeless with ponies.

Mine is bang on 16hh, that's what i've been told and when measured, thats what she is :) but most horses that i've been to view, have been smaller than advertised and its a shame as i'm tall and i was looking for minimum a 16hh, and when you go all that way to find a 15.1hh at most, its a bit dissapointing :(

My mare is 14.2. Mare in next stable is also 14.2. My mare is at least 3 ins taller than the other one. No idea which one is the right height, probably neither, and we've no measuring stick. Doesn't really matter though, she's an Arab so height doesn't matter for competing...

My youngster was advertised at 14hh but was only 13hh - fell in love and bought her anyway - she is now JUST touching 14hh on the measuring stick but very bum high, so hoping for another inch or two yet.

When I was looking at horses I went to see a 14.2, turned up and he was 13.2 MAX, when I said he was smaller than what I was expecting, they weren't having any of it and were convinced he was 14.2!

I don't think people are necessarily always lying, they genuinely don't know. If you measure a freshly trimmed, out of work horse whilst its stood relaxed, its quite possible to gain the appearance of another hand when its muscular, shod, & stood with its head up. And lots of people go by the second measurement. And unless you are using a measuring stick, appearances can be deceptive, even between two horses that have been correctly measured.

It works the other way round too. I went to see a 16.2 once which was at least 17.1. I was like, "are you taking the pi$$?" They weren't numpties though, I'm sure they did it just so it would come up in most people's searches and get more interest.

My old horse was advertised as 16.1hh. Everyone said how big she was, but we thought it was just because she was a chunky ISH- but when we did finally measure her, she was 17hh!! Quite big for my little 5"4ft self! :)
My girl now is different as we bought her as a 2yo- she was to make 16hh, I don't think she has quite made it though and is about 15.2hh :)
I had another young horse who was about 16hh I think, sold her on to monkeybum13 on here and she has shot up and I think she's over 17hh now?!

No one believes my fell pony is only 13.2hh, she has a lot of attitude and is built like a brick outhouse so seems bigger. Even the farrier measured her thinking I was wrong, but no. She does ride big too though, I'm 5ft 5ins but still feel a bit overhorsed when she gets her dander up!

I should my friend an advert for a 15.1hh when she was looking to buy. She told me that height was too small. Eventually she changed her mind and decided he might be worth a look after all. She bought him and when he came home he measured at 16.1hh which is what she wanted anyway!

I spent the first year of owning Dolly convincing myself that she is less than 12.2hh, and not too big for daughter.

And the last year convincing myself that she's 13+ hands and still growing (she's 14 years old ) and so will keep up with daughter's regular growth spurts!

Can ponies wear high heels? :D

We once travelled over 100 miles one way to view a 13.2hh pony (Was pony shopping for daughter) and turned up to a teeny thing who was no bigger than 11.2hh at a push, she was so disappointed :-)

When I went to see Buddy he was kept with shires, you wouldn't of placed him at more than 14hh next to them giants! He measured at 15.2 which is what his passport says, he is now closer to 16.2 two years on xx

mine came as 13.3hh got him home hes 12.3hh.. i did think he was smaller when i went to see him.. but hes still fine for me at my hight and weight..
