Looking to purchase a double bridle, I have been borrowing a friends for a while but now want to invest in my own. I wouldn't like anything too chunky as she only has a small head. Prefer a flatter noseband rather than a chunky raised one with a nice soft headpiece. Limited by budget - circa £100 as the neue schule bits will cost me £100+. I really liked a PDS one which was on sale with derby house for £120 but they sold out before I could buy one :( No need for a crank, as I don't do the nose band up very tight, but don't mind one either way. Would like a bit of patent or white padding or something nice, but obvs limited by budget.

I previously had a schumacher one but I sold it because the leather felt quite hard. I have seen others from schumacher online, they look really nice but am reluctant to take the plunge in case these ones are the same so if anyone has any experience of these would be greatly appreciated.

Before anyone questions me using a double bridle we are currently preparing to do our first adv. medium test and I have tried one at the recommendation of my dressage trainer who is a high level dressage judge and rider.

Any recommendations on brands / styles much appreciated!

A little tricky on your budget :o as the prices of nice bridles are spiralling away imo. .. but I'd have a look at FSS bridles on ebay which are available in a huge range of styles and the leather is pretty good, or premiera from hypostore

I have a premiera bridle that I've swapped in a FSS browband and noseband and I think they are about comparable tbh.
...OR
if you want something with a posh brand, go second hand. I picked up a nice sabre double for my other horse on ebay for a song.

Thanks for your help!

Nugget -I like that one but must admit I have been spying this one on Hope Valley for a while I just worry the leather will be hard again after the last one:

Milliepops - my friend has an FSS one in mock crock (not my bag at all!) lol but it seems quite nice and there are loads of options, I have bought few things from there, just not a bridle so I might have another look!

I have trawled eBay and have notifications set up for new listings - there seem to be fewer listings for cob size, but I am sure one will show up. :) have no issues buying second hand at all.

All my snaffle bridles are Evison and they are lovely leather and great prices. The double I am borrowing at the moment is Evison, but I just find it too chunky on her. I think the sticky out nosebands (technical term) sometimes interfere with the way the bit sits which really annoys me :)

If anyone sees any when you are shopping please send me the link, would be most appreciated! Maybe I should just save my pocket money for a while for the PDS or Schumacher one I like :) xx

having a horse with a small head, I found adding a sliphead to a normal bridle just seemed to make it take over her face :o

I like the premiera bridle because the buckles for the cheekpieces are at the crown rather than on the side of the face so there is less bulk.
Re nosebands interfering with the bit, that's why I swapped to the FSS noseband, they have nice cutaway ones which are a good price and it all sits quite flat and tidy now :)
The only buckles on the face are for the noseband and I stole some keepers to thread the curb hanger and noseband hangers through so one sits on top of the other.

One day I'll have a megabucks m2m bridle but for now this is quite a good compromise IMO. I quite like the rolled ones too.

Thank you Milliepops, just had a look at the premiera ones, my only reservation is not having the padding over the headpiece, but the bridles look really nice without all of the bulk on cheeks! I very much like your noseband too with the cutaway. Your boys looks really smart in his :)

Thanks Fuzzy Furry, I hadn't considered a slip head, I actually already have one i think lurking around in my tackroom from an old bridle, only problem is my existing bridle is a drop noseband and I hack / lunge regularly in the snaffle so it would be swapping bits around quite a lot. I actually could probably put a bridle together from the spares, hmm, will have a look tomorrow! thanks!

I've just bought one of the Hope Valley Shockemohle one. Hope Valley were a nightmare and I wont use them again, but the bridle is beautiful! Butter soft and such nice quality and an absolute bargain for the money
