Abe has a microchip that is not linked to any name or address just blank. But now the company has gone bust and so we can't have our name and address linked ect so we have to get him another one.

So can we just go ahead and get a second one put in?
 
I dont see why not...........he needs a chip and if the company are bust then little can be done there, the only thing that would worry me, if if he is lost and scanned the one chip shows (the dud one) and is taken into account first and the registered one is not scanned first.

otherwise ask the chip company that is active and used at your vets to reg the number under them and pay a little to them if need be and explain the situation??

Could u vet not locate and attempt to remove the unreged chip?
 
My new horse came with a chip noone recognised (done in Ireland)

I spoke to my vet about it and she said no way would they put a 2nd chip in.

I rang Petlog, gave them the number and they registered the number to my details.

pm Joanne on here... she's the one that helped me. She works for a chipping company.
 
oops i meant the vet went bust so i can't even find out what company the chip is with and it comes up totally blank when its read with the reader.

I have asked another chip company and they can't register it without a number or make.
 
ah no.... I doubt they can do it without a number! lol!

But then if it comes up blank does it matter that it's there?
 
I've sent dogs to the USA and their UK chips can be registered there.

If the chip can be read it can be added to a database but their may be a fee. If it can't be read it needs removing before another is inserted but try a different scanner first.

Its not a UK chip.
The chip can be read but the company needs a number which i do not have.

Sorry, you've lost me there.

Do you have the chip number? If so it can be re-registered especially if the supplier has gone out of business.

I know a vet in Florida who is familiar with importing so I'll drop her a query.

The question is can the chip be read?
 
I imagine you've already thought of this, but is there a chance that the number of the chip is recorded on any of the paperwork you've had from the vet? When my puppy was chipped recently the vets sent all the paperwork off to petlog themselves, but put a record of the chip number on the vaccs record just in case.

Failing that, I guess the only option is to have the dud one removed - what a pain in the backside.
 
I thought about that and a month of so ago i found the original stuff that i was suppose to send off when he first had it done (which my husband didn't tell me about) but he then threw it away because he thought i had done it already.

Oh well he got a new chip this morning and the old one will be deactivated tomorrow and then we will take it out at some point.
 
OK I'll admit that I'm not familiar with USA chips, but I believe there are three different types of chips, FDX-A, FDX-B and HDX alot of livestock in the uk have HDX chips which will not be read from an FDX scanner (which most domestic animal vets carry). Make sure the scanners you have used will read all the types of chips and if it's still coming up with no id number then yes I believe you will probably have to have it removed, otherwise as others have said anyone picking up your dog will scan it, and if the dud chip shows first they will assume it's the only one in it. I can't say I've ever known a scanner to beep saying chip but not show an id number, so do check out what the scanner will detect.

Regarding removal of the chip, my cat had her first chip migrate and it was removed, a very simple procedure from where it had moved to as you could feel it under the skin, she was then re-chipped so only had one current chip in her.

My teenie weenie tiny minpins both had two chips - one from the US and as that wasn't recognised, had to get another one here. No probs.
 
I think the chip can't be read because it contains secret documents for the FBI to be collected at a later date. :D as you can tell I'm a technophoebe but I remember hearing one of the problems with microchips in dogs is they can be so easily removed. Which is a plus if you need to remove one.
