I also wonder how those who drive their ponies and horses along these single track roads - what would happen if you meet an obnoxious stubborn driver who refuses to reverse??

That's happened to me. I'd just come up a short steep hill and there was no way I was going to ask him to back down it again. After standing nose to bonnet with the car for ages the finally started trying to reverse. They were all over the place , probably hadn't reversed since they took their test. Pony was getting fed up by the time they'd eventually reversed the 50 yards to a passing place.
